Transnational Organized Crime and European Union: Aspects and Problem

2013

The fight against criminal organisations and their ability to carry out illegal activities beyond national systems has represented a “bridge head” in the European path towards the harmonisation of criminal laws in the Member States. After identifying the role of the harmonisation of criminal law in the European Union Treaties, the study underline that the difficulty in defining the concept of transnational organised crime could lead to a too wide European intervention. In order to avoid such a risk, it is useful to refer to other relevant international sources, like the 2000 Palermo UN Convention. Nevertheless, the more recent European decisions on the matter (in particular, a Resolution by…

Transnational Political Activities of the Swedish Finn Youth Organization

2017

This article looks at the Swedish Finn Youth Organization’s transnational political activities, and how they have developed. In the beginning, the youth organization modelled itself after its mother organization and joined the Finnish Expatriate Parliament (FEP), which made its participation in transnational practices easy. The case study of the Swedish Finn Youth Organization in Stockholm, Sweden, demonstrates that if the younger generation is given an opportunity to establish and govern their own associations, new forms of organization can be expected. The younger generation has distinguished itself from the older generation’s associations by cooperating with other minorities and taking m…

Naratīvu izpausmes sociālajos tīklos: Stāsta ("Story") funkcija sociālajās platformās Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook un Whatsapp

2017

2013

The family reunification is not a happy ending after a long and painful separation, instead it is a new beginning that requires special attention to the reconstruction of the ties. According to a pedagogical reading, the long-distance relationship between parents and children, before the family reunification, involves the risk of educational injuries for children deprived for a long time of the intimate relationship with their parents. Often these aspects of risk aren’t understood by the social and educational services, they stop having relationships when family just when reunification happened. Then reunited families become a new interlocutor that expresses specific needs in schools, socia…

Climate change effects on trematodiases, with emphasis on zoonotic fascioliasis and schistosomiasis.

2009

The capacity of climatic conditions to modulate the extent and intensity of parasitism is well known since long ago. Concerning helminths, among the numerous environmental modifications giving rise to changes in infections, climate variables appear as those showing a greater influence, so that climate change may be expected to have an important impact on the diseases they cause. However, the confirmation of the impact of climate change on helminthiases has been reached very recently. Only shortly before, helminthiases were still noted as infectious diseases scarcely affected by climate change, when compared to diseases caused by microorganisms in general (viruses, bacteriae, protozoans). Th…

Fascioliasis and other plant-borne trematode zoonoses

2005

Fascioliasis and other food-borne trematodiases are included in the list of important helminthiases with a great impact on human development. Six plant-borne trematode species have been found to affect humans: Fasciola hepatica, Fasciola gigantica and Fasciolopsis buski (Fasciolidae), Gastrodiscoides hominis (Gastrodiscidae), Watsonius watsoni and Fischoederius elongatus (Paramphistomidae). Whereas F. hepatica and F. gigantica are hepatic, the other four species are intestinal parasites. The fasciolids and the gastrodiscid cause important zoonoses distributed throughout many countries, while W. watsoni and F. elongatus have been only accidentally detected in humans. Present climate and glob…

The Metamorphosis of Football Clubs

2015

In recent decades, Spanish football clubs have experienced an extraordinary transformation process that has decisively influenced their organizational structure. This chapter uses a sociological approach to study Spanish football clubs’ origin and evolution throughout the 20th century and until the present day. It includes an analysis of their recent processes of structural differentiation and their progressive transformation into transnational corporations, as well as an examination of the fans’ perspective on these transformations.

The volume and composition of dead wood on traditional and forest fuel harvested clear-cuts

2010

Logging residue and cut stumps are increasingly used as a renewable energy source known as forest fuel. Forest fuel harvesting obviously reduces the volume of dead wood and is likely to alter the dead wood composition, but the magnitude of the change is not known. Such information is important for the evaluation of the effects of forest fuel harvesting on biodiversity because a large proportion of forest dwelling species are directly dependent on dead wood. We measured the volume and characteristics of all dead wood units with a minimum diameter of 2 cm and a minimum length of 20 cm on 10 forest-fuel harvested and 10 traditional (control) clear-cuts. The total volume of dead wood at forest …
