Nitric oxide inhibits electrically active units in the rat pineal gland.

Extracellular multiple unit recordings were performed in isolated rat pineal glands to determine a possible effect of nitric oxide (NO) on the spontaneous electrical activity of pinealocytes. Spontaneously active cells forming clusters of 3-5 cells fell into two categories: more or less regularly firing clusters (REG, 64%) and irregularly discharging clusters with periodically repeated bursts (RHY, 36%). The NO-donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) reduced the discharge rate of the great majority of REG clusters and of all the RHY clusters examined. Preoperative evaluation of peripheral nerve injuries: What is the place for ultrasound?

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of ultrasound in the preoperative workup of peripheral nerve lesions and illustrate how nerve ultrasonography can be integrated in routine clinical and neurophysiological evaluation and in the management of focal peripheral nerve injuries. The diagnostic role and therapeutic implications of ultrasonography for different neuropathies are described. Isolated tracheae of newborn rabbits were incubated in vitro and the outflow of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) was determined by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Evidence has previously been provided that this 5-HT outflow derives from neuroendocrine epithelial (NEE) cells of the airway mucosa. Phenylephrine, at a maximally effective concentration of 10 microM, caused a transient increase in 5-HT outflow by about 250%, an effect mediated by alpha2B-adrenoceptors, as previously shown. Snapshot RGB mapping of skin melanin and hemoglobin.

The concept of snapshot red-green-blue (RGB) multispectral imaging was applied for skin chromophore mapping. Three monochromatic spectral images have been extracted from a single RGB image dataset at simultaneous illumination of skin by 473-, 532-, and 659-nm laser lines. The spectral images were further transformed into distribution maps of skin melanin, oxyhemoglobin, and deoxyhemoglobin, related to pigmented and vascular skin malformations. Possible roles of nitric oxide in the physiology and pathophysiology of the guinea pig cochlea.

Two nitric oxide synthase isoforms (NOS-I and NOS-III) are present in the mammalian cochlea, and many regulatory functions of the inner ear could be mediated by NO. In this study, cochlear potentials and immunohistochemical measures were analyzed by changing the concentration of NO in the guinea pig during intracochlear and intravenous application of an NOS inhibitor and an NO donor. In anesthetized guinea pigs the NOS inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine-methylester (L-NAME) was applied by intracochlear perfusion or intravenously. Failure of 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ) to inhibit soluble guanylyl cyclase in rat ventricular cardiomyocytes

The effects of 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ), an inhibitor of soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC), were investigated in aortic rings and ventricular cardiomyocytes from rats. The production of cyclic GMP was stimulated by NO•-donors or carbachol. Additionally, the effects of ODQ were studied in cytosolic extracts from both tissues in which the cyclic GMP production was stimulated by S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP). In endothelium-intact aortic rings, SNAP (100 μM), 2,2′-(hydroxynitrosohydrazino)bis-ethanamine (DETA NONOate; 100 μM), or carbachol (10 μM) increased cyclic GMP levels about 4 fold.
