Effect of cadmium on anion exchange capability through Band 3 protein in human erythrocytes
2018
The efficiency of transport through Band 3 protein, mediating HCO3–/Cl– exchange across erythrocytes membrane, is reduced by oxidative stress. The aim of the present study was to verify whether Band 3 protein transport efficiency is compromised by treatment with Cadmium (Cd2+), an extremely toxic heavy metal known to interfere with antioxidant enzymes, energy metabolism, gene expression and cell membranes. To this end, the rate constant for SO4= uptake through Band 3 protein (accounting for velocity of anion exchange) was measured along with membrane –SH groups, Malonyldialdehyde (MDA) and Band 3 protein expression levels in Cd2+-treated human erythrocytes (300 μM, 1 mM). Our results show t…
Preparation and photoactivity of nanocrystalline TiO2 powders obtained by thermohydrolysis of TiOSO4
2013
Nanocrystalline TiO2 photocatalysts were synthesized in mild conditions by thermohydrolysis of TiOSO4 in water at 100 °C and post-calcination treatment at various temperatures. The TiO2 powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, specific surface area determinations, scanning electron microscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. The photoactivity of the samples was tested employing the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol in liquid–solid regimen and the photooxidation of gaseous 2-propanol. The best results were obtained with the powder calcined at 600 °C for 10 h. Surprisingly, the not calcined sample was the most active for the abatement…
High-pressure study of the behavior of mineral barite by x-ray diffraction
2011
In this paper, we report the angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction data of barite, BaSO 4, measured in a diamond-anvil cell up to a pressure of 48 GPa, using three different fluid pressure-transmitting media (methanol-ethanol mixture, silicone oil, and He). Our results show that BaSO 4 exhibits a phase transition at pressures that range from 15 to 27 GPa, depending on the pressure media used. This indicates that nonhydrostatic stresses have a crucial role in the high-pressure behavior of this compound. The new high-pressure (HP) phase has been solved and refined from powder data, having an orthorhombic P2 12 12 1 structure. The pressure dependence of the structural parameters of both room- and…
Study of the high temperature behaviour of titanium alloy Ti6242S under complex atmospheres : aeronautical applications
2018
The use of titanium alloys in many applications (transport, energy, chemistry,...) allows significant weight savings in relation to the good mechanical properties/density ratio of these materials. Since titanium alloys are employed at high temperatures (T>500°C), their behavior in such conditions has to be studied in severe conditions in order to understand degradation mechanisms. Moreover, some specific conditions can be met during application, like thermal cycling, water vapour or presence of salts. These parameters are known to influence oxidation behavior of titanium alloys. In this thesis work, oxidation behavior of an aeronautics titanium alloy (Ti6242S) has been studied in air and moi…
Sulfate toxicity to early life stages of European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) in soft freshwater
2020
Sulfate occurs naturally in the aquatic environment but its elevated levels can be toxic to aquatic life in freshwater environments. We investigated the toxicity of sulfate in humic, soft freshwater to whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) from fertilization of eggs to hatching i.e. during the critical phases of whitefish early development. Anadromous Kokemäenjoki whitefish eggs and sperm during fertilization, embryos and larvae were exposed in the long-term 175-day incubation to seven different sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) concentrations from 44 to 2 000 mg SO4 L−1. Endpoint variables were the fertilization success, offspring survival and larval growth. Egg fertilization and early embryonic developmen…
