Lay definitions of happiness across nations: The primacy of inner harmony and relational connectedness
2016
In well-being research the term happiness is often used as synonymous with life satisfaction. However, little is known about lay people's understanding of happiness. Building on the available literature, this study explored lay definitions of happiness across nations and cultural dimensions, analyzing their components and relationship with participants' demographic features. Participants were 2799 adults (age range = 30-60, 50% women) living in urban areas of Argentina, Brazil, Croatia, Hungary, India, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, and United States. They completed the Eudaimonic and Hedonic Happiness Investigation (EHHI), reporting, among other information, th…
Taide ja kulttuuri -opintojakso osana nuorisoasteen ammatillista peruskoulutusta : ammatillisten opettajien näkemyksiä Taide ja kulttuuri -opintojaks…
2013
Pro gradu -tutkielmani aihe tarkastelee yhden opintoviikon, eli noin neljänkymmenen tunnin laajuista taide ja kulttuuri -opintojaksoa osana nuorisoasteen ammatillista peruskoulutusta. Tutkielmani tavoitteena on muun muassa selvittää, millaiset ovat opettajana toimimisen lähtökohdat kyseisessä tehtävässä, miten opettajat mieltävät opintojakson merkityksen sekä keskeiset tavoitteet, millaisin sisällöin opetus toteutuu, sekä millaisia kehittämistarpeita opintojakso opettajien mielestä pitää sisällään. Tutkimusongelmani tiivistyy kysymykseen ”millainen on Taide ja kulttuuri -opintojakso osana nuorisoasteen ammatillista peruskoulutusta”. Ammatillinen peruskoulutus on ammati…
Detection of exercise load-associated differences in hip muscles by texture analysis
2014
We examined whether specific physical exercise loading is associated with texture parameters from hip muscles scanned with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Ninety-one female athletes representing five distinct exercise-loading groups (high-impact, odd-impact, low-impact, nonimpact and high-magnitude) and 20 nonathletic female controls underwent MRI of the hip. Texture parameters were computed from the MRI images of four hip muscles (gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, iliopsoas and obturator internus). Differences in muscle texture between the athlete groups and the controls were evaluated using Mann-Whitney U-test. Significant (P < 0.05) textural differences were found between the high-impac…

On Ignoring the Random Effects Assumption in Multilevel Models: Review, Critique, and Recommendations
2019
Entities such as individuals, teams, or organizations can vary systematically from one another. Researchers typically model such data using multilevel models, assuming that the random effects are uncorrelated with the regressors. Violating this testable assumption, which is often ignored, creates an endogeneity problem thus preventing causal interpretations. Focusing on two-level models, we explain how researchers can avoid this problem by including cluster means of the Level 1 explanatory variables as controls; we explain this point conceptually and with a large-scale simulation. We further show why the common practice of centering the predictor variables is mostly unnecessary. Moreover, …
Covalent modificaition of juvenile hormone binding proteins by photoaffinity labeling: An unexpected gel shift effect
1994
The 32 kD juvenile hormone binding protein (JHBP) and two 80 kD proteins in larval Manduca sexta hemolymph were labeled with [3H]FDK, a photoaffinity analog of methyl farnesoate (MF). The labeling could be completely displaced by a 30-fold excess of either MF or JH II, demonstrating that [3H]FDK binds specifically to the JH binding sites of the 32 kD JHBP and the 80 kD proteins. In addition, a high molecular-mass protein was labeled with [3H]FDK; labeling could be displaced by excess MF but not by JH II, demonstrating the selectivity in binding MF. The 32 kD JHBP also appeared to weakly bind the potent juvenoid, methoprene, at the JH binding site. Covalent modification by [3H]FDK induced a …
Peripheral innervation of the heart
1987
The present immunohistochemical study demonstrates the multiplicity, histotopography and origin of peptidergic innervation in the mammalian heart. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is the major representative of peptides in cardiac sympathetic efferents. Sympathetic afferents are characterized by the presence of tachykinins, calcitonin gene-related peptide and apparently also some opioid peptides. Predominant peptides of the vagal system are tachykinins. The intrinsic peptidergic system predominantly consists of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide/peptide histidine isoleucine. Paracrine systems are merely opioid-ergic. Target relations of extrinsic and intrinsic peptidergic nerves were found to be more di…
Experimental and estimated saturated vapour pressures of aroma compounds
1999
Abstract The saturated vapour pressure of d-linalool, 2-nonanone, d-limonene and isoamyl acetate were measured using a static method at different temperatures from 223 to 468 K. From the experimental values, Antoine's constants were determined to enable the calculations of the saturated vapour pressures at a given temperature. The saturated vapour pressure of the four aroma compounds at 298 K were respectively 27, 59, 200 and 733 Pa. These results were compared with those obtained using different estimation methods (Antoine–Grain, Watson, Lee–Kesler, Gomez–Thodos, Grain and Mackay). Gomez–Thodos' model was found to be the most accurate method for the estimation of the saturated vapour press…
Synthesis of new 2,2′-disubstituted 5,5′-dimethyl-4,4′-bitriazoles and 2-(4-Triazolyl)quinoxalines
2000
Thermal rearrangement of 3-acylisoxazole arylhydrazones allowed facile preparation of 2H-1,2,3-triazoles which were firstly reacted with isoamyl nitrite and then with an opportune arylhydrazine to produce the corresponding α-hydroxyiminohydrazones 8a-h. The reaction of compounds 8a-h with phosphorus pentachloride afforded the desired 4,4′-bitriazoles 1a-h. The α-hydroxyiminoketone derivative 7 or the α-diketone 14 reacted easily with 1,2-phenylenediamine to afford 1,2,3-triazoles 2a-c bearing the quinoxaline moiety at position 4. Improved yields of the quinoxalines 2a-c were obtained when 1,2-phenylenediamine was reacted with the dioxime 15.
