Education for development in the university context. Why and for what?

2021

Axiomatic characterization of the weighted solidarity values

2014

Abstract We define and characterize the class of all weighted solidarity values . Our first characterization employs the classical axioms determining the solidarity value (except symmetry ), that is, efficiency , additivity and the A-null player axiom , and two new axioms called proportionality and strong individual rationality . In our second axiomatization, the additivity and the A-null player axioms are replaced by a new axiom called average marginality .

The Social State Based on the Rule of Law in the Europe of Rights

2012

Chapter 8 shows how the idea of the social State under the rule of law has been linked to the European Union since its inception. The founding fathers (Adenaeur, de Gasperi, Monet, Schuman) set the principles of dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity as a way of freeing European citizens from fear, misery and misfortune. Welfare is, above all, a state of justice that defines the threshold between indecency and well-being and affirms that human development is not (only) economic growth. Jacques Maritain, whose influence on the European Union is well known, proclaimed the order that contains the three principles of the social state: the primacy of the person, the priority of civil society …

Mediterranean Borders and Diaspora

2020

“And So Europe Dehumanized Itself”, the expression used by Toni Morrison regarding slavery, seems to have returned dramatically to current affairs. We seem to have plunged into a dystopian present in which the European Union, instead of governing the disruptive global migrations through appropriate policies, has expressed such nervousness – both at the popular and institutional levels – to give rise, in an unstoppable crescendo, to practices inspired by xenophobia and racism. It has led to the inhuman treatment of migrants (I refer both to shipwrecks at sea, a real massacre and to the torture and torture reserved for them in Libya with the complicity of European governments) and finally to …

How alternative food networks work in a metropolitan area? An analysis of Solidarity Purchase Groups in Northern Italy

2019

AbstractOur paper focuses on Solidarity Purchase Group (SPG) participants located in a highly urbanized area, with the aim to investigate the main motivations underlining their participation in a SPG and provide a characterization of them. To this end, we carried out a survey of 795 participants involved in 125 SPGs in the metropolitan area of Milan (Italy). Taking advantage of a questionnaire with 39 questions, we run a factor analysis and a two-step cluster analysis to identify different profiles of SPG participants. Our results show that the system of values animating metropolitan SPG practitioners does not fully conform to that traditionally attributed to an alternative food network (AF…

La economía social y solidaria en Grecia

2017

Job Quality in the Economy for the Common Good : conceptualisation and implementation in Austria and Germany

2020

The Economy for the Common Good (ECG) is an Austrian-born movement promoting an alternative economic model built on values oriented to the common welfare such as human dignity, solidarity, ecological sustainability, social justice, transparency and democratic participation. To provide (high) quality of work plays an important role in the ECG philosophy but little is known on the actual labour conditions of workers employed in such type of firms and whether they differ from those of firms in the ?regular? default economy. In this paper we focus on Austria and Germany, the countries where this economic model is most widespread, and present results on the general structure of firms following t…
