Monochorionic twin pregnancy: screening, pathogenesis of complications and management in the era of microinvasive fetal surgery

2010

Objective The management of monochorionic (MC) twin pregnancies varies in different medical centers. This paper compares screening methods to predict the complications of the MC twin pregnancy and different treatment methods. Methods We performed a literature search without language restriction in Cochrane library and PubMed (1970-2009). Case series and cohort screening studies, pathogenesis and management of complications of MC pregnancy were included. Results Elevated risk for intrauterine fetal death (IUFD) and twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) can be detected sonographically. Monitoring of MC pregnancies at increased risk and regular training sessions for the operating team combi…

Is Hysteroscopy Better than Ultrasonography for Uterine Cavity Evaluation? An Evidence-Based and Patient-Oriented Approach

2016

Evaluation of the uterine cavity is an important part of the gynecological check, especially in symptomatic women and, over the last few decades, a number of technical and technological advancements has allowed a superb investigation of this organ. Traditionally, transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) has been the first-line diagnostic tool for evaluating uterine diseases, also considering that gynecologists are familiar with the technique since it is included in the basic training in obstetrics and gynecology. Nevertheless, to date “office hysteroscopy” received growing attention since the development of smaller-diameter hysteroscopes which has made it possible to easily perform the hysteroscopy …

Incidentally discovered thyroid nodules: incidence, and greyscale and colour Doppler pattern in an adult population screened by real-time compound sp…

2006

Purpose. Our aim was to assess the incidence and ultrasound features of thyroid nodules in an adult population screened by means of high-resolution ultrasonography (HRUS) and to evaluate the contribution of real-time spatial compound sonography (CS) in terms of image quality. Materials and methods. A total of 704 consecutive patients (400 women, 304 men) without thyroid disease underwent HRUS and CS examination of the thyroid gland. Number, size, location, echotexture and colour Doppler pattern of detected nodules were assessed. Two radiologists also assessed image quality of the two techniques. Results. Seven hundred and eleven thyroid nodules (size range 0.18-4.1 cm; mean: 1.1 cm) were de…

Image-guided transcranial Doppler sonography for monitoring of vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

2016

Transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) is a standard method for bedside vasospasm monitoring after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Image guidance has previously been shown to reduce intra- and interobserver variability of this method. The aim of the present study was to compare image-guided and conventional TCD in vasospasm monitoring after SAH.418 TCD exams of 24 consecutive SAH patients registered in a database were evaluated. Of these, 130 image-guided exams were identified which had been performed on the same day as conventional Doppler exams. These matched pairs were taken for statistical analysis. Data were tested statistically using the sign test applied at patient level to aggregated …

Anatomical variations of the internal jugular vein: The role of ultrasonography

2014

Purpose: In many places, especially in emergency department, central venous catheter is still inserted using anatomical landmark guidance with a success rate up to 97.6% and complications up to 15%. This study was aimed to determine by the support of ultrasono-graphy (US) the anatomical variations of the internal jugular vein (IJV) in relation with other structures of the neck, such as the common carotid artery (CCA). Material and Methods: 830 patients requiring central vein catheterization (CVC) were in-cluded in the analysis. The position of the IJV in relation to the other structures of the neck was demonstrated by portable ultrasonography. Results: The mean diameter of IJV was 10.3 mm i…

Ticlopidine in the Treatment of Multiple Atherosclerotic Arteriopathy: a Strain Gauge Plethysmography and Döppler Spectrum Analysis Evaluation

1987

The effect of ticlopidine was compared with flunarizine in patients with iliac–femoral and / or femoral–popliteal arteriosclerotic arteriopathy accompanied by lesions of the cervical arteries of no haemodynamic significance. In the lower limbs, plethysmography (strain gauge measurements) and Döppler ultrasonography integrated by spectral analysis of the cervical arteries showed qualitative and quantitative improvements of the regional haematic flow. Side-effects were negligible which suggests that ticlopidine is useful in the treatment of multiple arteriosclerotic arteriopathy.

Correlation of endoanal sonography with cross-sectional anatomy of the anal sphincter

1999

Abstract Background: Anal endosonography has become an important imaging method in the diagnosis of anorectal disorders. However, little information exists as to whether anal endosonography reliably defines pelvic floor structures. The aim of this study was to correlate endoanal sonography with cross-sectional anatomy and histology. Methods: Endosonographic tomograms were obtained from 9 human cadavers before fixation and cross-sectioning at identical levels. Muscular layers were defined by visual inspection, histology, immunohistology, and morphometry using three-dimensional sphincter reconstructions. Results: Endosonography visualized only two muscular layers, whereas anatomic sections al…

Bichat's fat-pad: correlations with some anthropometric parameters.

1997

SummaryThe primary aim of this investigation was to evaluate the relationship between Bichat's fat-pad volume, visualized by ultrasonography, and widely used anthropometric measurements, in 60 women and 13 men, ranging in weight from 57 to 124·5 kg. The body of Bichat's fat-pad was significantly correlated with all anthropometric parameters, although the correlation was much stronger with weight (r = 0·94, p < 0·0001, women; r = 0·85, p = 0·0003, men) and body mass index (BMI) (r = 0·94, p < 0·0001, women; r = 0·91, p < 0·0001, men).

Benign focal liver lesions: spectrum of findings on SonoVue-enhanced pulse-inversion ultrasonography.

2005

The prevalence of benign focal liver lesions (BFLL) is high both in the general population and in patients with known malignancies. The gray-scale ultrasound (US) technique is usually the first-line imaging modality used in the radiological workup of such lesions, but unfortunately it lacks specificity. Furthermore, Doppler examination may often be unsatisfactory owing to motion artefacts, or when small or deeply located lesions are evaluated. Recently, microbubble-based contrast agents used in combination with gray-scale US techniques, which are very sensitive to nonlinear behavior of microbubbles, have led to a better depiction of both microvasculature and macrovasculature of focal hepati…

Fitness and lean mass increases during combined training independent of loading order.

2014

Although the benefits of combined endurance (E) and strength (S) training for the development of physical fitness and health are well known, scientific examination of the effect of loading order when E and S are combined into the same training session (E+S vs S+E) is rare. This study investigated the effects of moderate frequency E+S versus S+E training on physical fitness, body composition, and blood lipids.Physically active and healthy young men performed E+S (n = 16) or S+E (n = 18) training 2-3 times a week for 24 wk. Endurance (by incremental bike test) and strength (by dynamic leg press) performance as well as body composition (by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry), muscle cross-sectio…
