Towards clinical application of RayStretch for heterogeneity corrections in LDR permanent 125-I prostate brachytherapy

2017

Purpose RayStretch is a simple algorithm proposed for heterogeneity corrections in low-dose–rate brachytherapy. It is built on top of TG-43 consensus data, and it has been validated with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. In this study, we take a real clinical prostate implant with 71 125I seeds as reference and we apply RayStretch to analyze its performance in worst-case scenarios. Methods and Materials To do so, we design two cases where large calcifications are located in the prostate lobules. RayStretch resilience under various calcification density values is also explored. Comparisons against MC calculations are performed. Results Dose–volume histogram–related parameters like prostate D90, …

ESRA19-0275 The efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided superficial cervical plexus block (SCPB) in patient undergoing thyroid surgery: a case report

2019

Background and aims The SCPB provides effective anesthesia and analgesia for the head and neck region. CPBs can be performed more safely and accurately under ultrasound guidance, which is used to easily identify various important landmarks. This case report was carried out to assess the efficacy of SCPB in reducing the intra and postoperative use of opioids/analgesics to control pain due to thyroidectomy. Methods Case report: 45-year-old woman, ASA II, underwent left hemithyroidectomy under general anesthesia (sevoflorane 2% and remifentanil TCI 0.7–1 ng/ml). Ultrasound-guided left superficial cervical plexus block (SCPB) was performed using levobupivacaine 10 ml 0.25%. Pain score was measu…

Ultrasound in Varicose Vein Treatment

2014

Diagnosis is a prerequisite for all treatment strategies. Duplex ultrasound is the best diagnostic tool for varicose veins for all expressions of the disease (Nicolaides Circulation 102:126–163, 2000). All types of intervention on varicose veins have their own special demands on ultrasound. Ultrasound-guided vein mapping on the skin is very helpful prior to saphenous stripping (See Sect. 12.1), and it is absolutely indispensible for CHIVA (See Sect. 12.2). In endovascular thermal therapies (See Sect. 12.3) or foam sclerotherapy of trunk veins (See Sect. 12.4), ultrasound is an essential part of the treatment process. The actual procedures will only be explained here in relation to ultrasoun…

1583 Clinical and Ultrasound Examination after Unilateral Orchiopexy

2012

Aim To compare testis volume and ultrasound texture post unilateral orchiopexy with the other side. Methods Clinical re-examination and ultrasound measurement of testicle volume and echostructure were performed in 99 children after unilateral orchiopexy, performed between 2003 and 2007. Results Intraoperatively, 30 testis were described as hypoplastic. further 5 patients displayed pathologic funicular structures. On Follow-up clinical exam, 45 patients displayed a small or atrophic testis on the side of surgery. In 10 patients, the testis was described as bigger on the side of surgery. On ultrasound, 65 patients had similar pictures on the side of surgery compared to the other side. In the …

Sekundäre Achalasie bei niedrigmalignem Non-Hodgkin-Lymphom und Leiomyomatose der Kardia

2008

A 28-year-old man had been dysphagic for 9 months with a weight loss of 4 kg. A preliminary diagnosis of primary achalasia was made on the basis of typical radiological and manometric findings. Despite balloon dilatation of the cardia the symptoms did not improve and further diagnostic tests were performed. Ultrasound demonstrated a 4 cm tumour below the cardia. But its type and possible malignancy remained uncertain even at laparotomy. But as a malignant tumour was suspected a gastrectomy and omentectomy with removal of the local and regional lymph nodes were performed. After this the symptoms regressed and postoperative food intake was without problem. Histological examination of the surg…

Die Sonoanatomie des Spinalkanales der LWS

2008

UNLABELLED Results of an Experimental Study and Report of Intraoperative Application: AIM Intraoperative sonography has been used in neurosurgery (especially in tumors) and in traumatology (assess reduction of dorsal vertebral body fragments). This study was performed to determine the value of sonography in detecting vertebral disc tissue. RESULTS We examined 6 specimens of the Lumbar spine using the extended flavectomy approach. We found that sono-anatomy was reproducible and that the assessable area was large enough to make sonography useful for detection of sequesters. Dislocated vertebral disc tissue could be differentiated clearly from original disc tissue and from other intraspinal st…

The study on the importance of effects after the ultrasound use in the recovery of patients with lower lumbar discopathy

2018

The low back pain is a public health problem, affecting the adult population and the young one. It is estimated that 90% of the population will experience at least one episode of lower lumbar pain during their lifetime, half of whom may have a second painful episode during the same year. Frequently, the mechanical cause (the pain is somatic and deep, caused by lesions in the musculoskeletal tendon or ligament, in non-specific degenerative or inflammatory diseases) but also the psychosocial factors are incriminated. In low back pain, ultrasounds were used for the analgesic effect, muscle relaxing and for the hyperemia effect. The paper has as purpose the study of the effects of applying ultr…

Gallbladder Agenesis: Report of a Preoperative Diagnosis With Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography

2020

Agenesis of the gallbladder is an extremely rare congenital entity with shaded clinical and radiologic features, which make the preoperative diagnosis really challenging. Here, we report a case of a 52-year-old symptomatic female with biliary symptoms and contracted gallbladder at ultrasound (US). The final diagnosis was made with magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) and the treatment was conservative. However, diagnosing this condition preoperatively is still challenging. However, with innovations in terms of biliary tract imaging technique, and with better knowledge of this entity, many unnecessary surgical procedures might be avoided.

US in the assessment of acute scrotum

2013

Abstract Background The acute scrotum is a medical emergency . The acute scrotum is defined as scrotal pain, swelling, and redness of acute onset. Scrotal abnormalities can be divided into three groups , which are extra-testicular lesion, intra-testicular lesion and trauma. This is a retrospective analysis of 164 ultrasound examination performed in patient arriving in the emergency room for scrotal pain. The objective of this article is to familiarize the reader with the US features of the most common and some of the least common scrotal lesions. Methods Between January 2008 and January 2010, 164 patients aged few month and older with scrotal symptoms, who underwent scrotal ultrasonography …

Experiences of family physicians after a CME ultrasound course

2017

Background. Ultrasonography is an inexpensive, safe, noninvasive tool for obtaining diagnoses without performing further imaging tests, and for the timely referral of patients to further diagnosis or specialist care. Objectives . To determine which ultrasound tests are most often performed by family physicians, and what factors contribute to their use of ultrasound imaging. Material and methods . This survey-based study using the authors’ questionnaire was conducted in March 2016 among 81 primary care physicians who had completed weekend courses on ultrasound abdominal cavity imaging. Results . Family physicians most often took ultrasounds of the abdominal cavity (35/50; 70%) and thyroid gl…
