Artificial cartilage bio-matrix formed of hyaluronic acid and Mg2+-polyphosphate.

Here we show that inorganic polyphosphate (polyP), a polyanionic metabolic regulator consisting of multiple phosphate residues linked by energy-rich phosphoanhydride bonds, is present in the synovial fluid. In a biomimetic approach, to enhance cartilage synthesis and regeneration, we prepared amorphous polyP microparticles with Mg2+ as counterions. The particles were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) analyses. 18-hydroxylation in the Y-1 adrenal cell line: response to ACTH and to culture conditions.

The 18-hydroxylation of deoxycorticosterone in the Y-1 adrenal cell line was studied under various incubation and cell culture conditions and compared to 11 beta-hydroxylation. Repeated incubation of the substrate increased both 18- and 11 beta-hydroxylation in the Y-1 cells. Furthermore, both 18- and 11 beta-hydroxylation were increased with increased serum concentration and prolonged incubation time. While the increase in 11 beta-hydroxylation seemed to be independent of the type of serum, 18-hydroxylation was much more important in cells cultured in fetal or newborn calf serum supplemented medium than in those cultured in horse serum supplemented medium. Lung involvement and drug-induced lung disease in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a common extra-articular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Usual interstitial pneumonia and nonspecific interstitial pneumonia seem to be the most frequent patterns in RA patients with ILD, although the proportion of patients with usual interstitial pneumonia is higher than among patients with other systemic rheumatic autoimmune diseases. Sox17 regulates liver lipid metabolism and adaptation to fasting.

Liver is a major regulator of lipid metabolism and adaptation to fasting, a process involving PPARalpha activation. We recently showed that the Vnn1 gene is a PPARalpha target gene in liver and that release of the Vanin-1 pantetheinase in serum is a biomarker of PPARalpha activation. Here we set up a screen to identify new regulators of adaptation to fasting using the serum Vanin-1 as a marker of PPARalpha activation. Endoderm development requires centrioles to restrain p53-mediated apoptosis in the absence of ERK activity

Centrioles comprise the heart of centrosomes, microtubule-organizing centers. To study the function of centrioles in lung and gut development, we genetically disrupted centrioles throughout the mouse endoderm. Surprisingly, removing centrioles from the endoderm did not disrupt intestinal growth or development but blocked lung branching. In the lung, acentriolar SOX2-expressing airway epithelial cells apoptosed. Loss of centrioles activated p53, and removing p53 restored survival of SOX2-expressing cells, lung branching, and mouse viability. UV-B exposure causes DNA damage and changes in protein expression in northern pike (Esox lucius) posthatched embryos.

The ongoing anthropogenically caused ozone depletion and climate change has increased the amount of biologically harmful UV-B radiation, which is detrimental to fish in embryonal stages. The effects of UV-B radiation on the levels and locations of DNA damage manifested as cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs), heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and p53 protein in newly hatched embryos of pike were examined. Pike larvae were exposed in the laboratory to current and enhanced doses of UV-B radiation. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly malignant tumor that responds very poorly to existing therapies, most probably due to its extraordinary inter- and intra-tumor molecular heterogeneity. The modest therapeutic response to molecular targeted agents underlines the need for new therapeutic approaches for HCC. Monenlaisiin vesistötyyppeihin hyvin sopeutunut hauki (Esox lucius L.) kasvaa suotuisissa olosuhteissa kalaravinnon avulla nopeasti suurikokoiseksi ravintoketjun huippupedoksi. Saaliskalojen puuttuessa tai ravinnonsaatavuuden ollessa rajoitettua on kasvunopeus puolestaan hyvin hidasta. Pienten suomalaisten metsäjärvien haukien ravinnonkäyttöä ja sen vaikutusta kasvuun selvitettiin mahanäytteiden sekä vakaiden isotooppien avulla.
