The First Decades of Independence – White Finland
2019
The Republic of Finland was established after a bloody civil war between the Reds and the Whites in 1918. This chapter analyses the emergence of Finnish independence and the role higher education played in the new republic in the 1920s and 1930s. During this period, the University of Helsinki was Finland’s dominant higher education institution, even though one public pedagogical college and seven private higher education institutions were also established: two universities (one Swedish-speaking and one Finnish-speaking), three business schools, a technical university, and a higher education institution of social sciences.
Application of finger span cross modality matching method (FSCM) by naive assessors for olfactometric discrimination of Gewürztraminer wines
2002
Abstract A gas-chromatography-olfactometric detection (GCO) using a direct estimation of odor intensities with the finger span (FSCM) was used to establish aroma profiles of three wines of gewurztraminer from different ‘terroirs’ of the Alsace region. The GCO-FSCM analyses of their hydroalcoholic wine extracts were performed using a group of untrained assessors. Forty-four olfactory signals were perceived by at least four assessors out of six and their intensities were scored in triplicate in each of the three wine extracts, amongst which ten of them were found discriminant between wines. The reliability of each assessor was studied on the basis of the finger span estimation repeatability, …
Francisco Pizarro de Rosa Arciniega-Un intento de legitimación de la voz de una historiadora
2022
A reading of the historical novel Francisco Pizarro, written by the Peruvian Rosa Arciniega in 1936, is proposed. Through the analysis of the work, we will reflect on the relationship of the writer with the national historiography and with the ideal of a woman who dominated Latin American political and cultural discourse in the first half of the 20th century. From this, we seek to identify the place that the author constructs for herself within the intellectual field.

Abstract Applying social investment theory (SIT), we examined whether employment trajectories until midlife, with differential investments in education and employment, are associated with social investments during early life and with work-related well-being in midlife, with a special reference to potential differences between self-employment and paid work. In the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (n = 6496; 2963 men, 3533 women), life-history calendars from age 16–45 were used to determine the respondents’ yearly employment statuses (student, full-time employee, part-time employee, self-employed, unemployed, on parental leave, on sabbatical leave or otherwise not working). Latent class ana…
Professional Agency, Identity, and Emotions While Leaving One’s Work Organization
2015
This study investigated the enactment of professional agency in an emotionally troubled work context emerging from a conflicted relationship between the professional and the work organization. Narrative interviews with Finnish educators were utilized. The findings indicate that the enactment of agency was in part framed by the educators’ rational interpretations of the relationship between themselves and their employer, plus their work history and future prospects. However, it was simultaneously embedded with contradictory emotions, such as a sense of being undervalued, fear, and a sense of empowerment. Within this framework, multifaceted professional agency was enacted particularly via lea…
Factors Contributing to Different Agency in Work and Study
2013
Most young adults today are following longer educational tracks and postpone entrance into the workforce. This 2-year study aimed to determine factors contributing to occupational self-efficacy in a representative sample of n = 1,891 young adults ( M = 23.92, SD = 2.17 years) with different work statuses (studying, in an apprenticeship, employed, or unemployed). Occupational identity, perceived work quality, the ability to cope with work stress, and symptomatology were assessed. Path analyses revealed that work status was the most important predictor of later occupational self-efficacy, with employment showing the strongest prediction of later agency in the professional domain. Ruminative e…

Background: Normal aging is associated with working memory decline. A decrease in working memory performance is associated with age-related changes in functional activation patterns in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Cognitive training can improve cognitive performance in healthy older adults. We implemented a cognitive training study to assess determinants of generalization of training gains to untrained tasks, a key indicator for the effectiveness of cognitive training. We aimed to investigate the association of resting-state functional connectivity (FC) of DLPFC with working memory performance improvement and cognitive gains after the training.Method: A sample of 60 healthy o…
Lealtà alla prova: “Casa”, Monarchia, Chiesa. La carriera politica del cardinale Giannettino Doria (1573-1642)
2015
The teaching of the Valencian language and linguistic prejudices. A case study in a secondary school in Plana Utiel-Requena
2020
[EN] The present research deals with the question of the teaching of Valencian in the Spanish-speaking areas where the LUEV (1983) is in force, which determines the possibility of exemption from the subject of Valencian. Specifically, we approach the question of the beliefs and social representations on the language and its teaching from a case study carried out in a secondary school of the city of Requena. The aim of the study is to identify and differentiate the linguistic attitudes towards the Valencian language in this sociolinguistic context and it is an opportunity to present an educational change. The results of this study respond to the ideas of the students and the native teachers …
An Image Segmentation Algorithm based on Community Detection
2016
International audience; With the recent advances in complex networks, image segmentation becomes one of the most appropriate application areas. In this context, we propose in this paper a new perspective of image segmentation by applying two efficient community detection algorithms. By considering regions as communities, these methods can give an over-segmented image that has many small regions. So, the proposed algorithms are improved to automatically merge those neighboring regions agglomerative to achieve the highest modularity/stability. To produce sizable regions and detect homogeneous communities, we use the combination of a feature based on the Histogram of Oriented Gradients of the …
