High-resolution Fourier transform spectra of a vanadium-argon plasma have been recorded in the wavelength range of 365-670 nm (15,000-27,400 cm–1). Optical bandpass filters were used in the experimental setup to enhance the sensitivity of the Fourier transform spectrometer. In total, 138 atomic vanadium spectral lines showing resolved or partially resolved hyperfine structure have been analyzed to determine the magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants A of the involved energy levels. One of the investigated lines has not been previously classified. Vertical quantum dots with elliptically deformed cross sections

Abstract Few-electron vertical quantum dot artificial atoms with circular and elliptically deformed cross sections are investigated. Because of the high symmetry of the lateral confining potential, circular dots show a pronounced shell structure. With the lifting of level degeneracies, even a small deformation in shape is found to radically alter the shell structure leading to significant modifications of the addition energy spectra, and to induce change in the total spin.

This paper is concerned with experiments which measure CMB anisotropies on small angular scales. A certain coverage, a beam structure and a level of uncorrelated noise define each experiment. We focus our atention on the reversion of the beam average. In each experiment, we look for the best pixelization for reversion, namely, for the pixelization that -after reversion- leads to good maps containing right spectra for the most wide range of angular scales. Squared pixels having different sizes "smaller" than the beam radius are considered. For a given size, the following question arises: How well can we assign a temperature to each pixel? Mechanisms regulating the evolution of pre-main sequence stars can be understood by studying stellar properties such as rotation, disk accretion, internal mixing and binarity. To investigate such properties, we studied a sample of 332 candidate members of the massive and populous star forming region NGC 6530. We want to select cluster members by using different membership criteria,to study the properties of pre-main sequence stars with or without circumstellar disks. Small Angular Scale Simulations of the Microwave Sky

We describe and compare two types of microwave sky simulations which are good for small angular scales. The first type uses expansions in spherical harmonics, and the second one is based on plane waves and the Fast Fourier Transform. The angular power spectrum is extracted from maps corresponding to both types of simulations, and the resulting spectra are appropriately compared. In this way, the features and usefulness of Fourier simulations are pointed out. For $\ell \geq 100$, all the simulations lead to similar accuracies; however, the CPU cost of Fourier simulations is $\sim 10$ times smaller than that for spherical harmonic simulations. The exceptionally extended flaring activity in the X-ray afterglow of GRB 050730 observed with Swift and XMM-Newton

We present the results of a detailed spectral and temporal analysis of Swift and XMM-Newton observations of the high redshift (z=3.969) GRB 050730. The X-ray afterglow of GRB 050730 was found to decline with time with superimposed intense flaring activity that extended over more than two orders of magnitude in time. Seven distinct re-brightening events starting from 236 s up to 41.2 ks after the burst were observed. The underlying decay of the afterglow was well described by a double broken power-law model with breaks at t_1= 237 +/- 20 s and t_2 = 10.1 (-2.2) (+4.6) ks. A Hard Tail in the X‐Ray Broadband Spectrum of Circinus X‐1 at the Periastron: A Peculiar Z Source

We report on the spectral analysis of the peculiar source Cir X-1 observed by the BeppoSAX satellite when the X-ray source was near the periastron. A flare lasting ~6 × 103 s is present at the beginning of the observation. The luminosity during the persistent emission is 1 × 1038 ergs s-1, while during the flare it is 2 × 1038 ergs s-1. We produced broadband (0.1-100 keV) energy spectra during the flare and the persistent emission. At low energies the continuum is well fitted by a model consisting of Comptonization of soft photons, with a temperature of ~0.4 keV, by electrons at a temperature of ~1 keV. XMM-Newton observation of the classical T Tauri star SU Aurigae and the surrounding field

Aims. We investigate the properties of the X-ray emitting plasma of the classical T Tauri star SU Aurigae and of other sources in the field of view. Methods. We use XMM-Newton to obtain a high-resolution RGS spectrum of SU Aur as well as EPIC imaging data and lowresolution spectra of the star and of other X-ray sources in the surrounding field. We reconstruct the emission measure distribution of SU Aur from the RGS spectrum using a line-based method, and we perform multi-temperature fits of the MOS spectra of the strongest sources both for the full observation and for selected time intervals to study their spectral variability. The Zoo of emission lines in the spectrum of Cir X-1 observed by XMM-Newton

We present the preliminary analysis of a 10 ks XMM-Newton EPIC/pn observation of Cir X-1 immediately after the zero phase. The continuum emission is modeled using a blackbody component partially absorbed by neutral matter probably located around the binary system. We detect a forest of emission lines associated to highly ionized ions.
Detection of a Hard Tail in the X-Ray Spectrum of the Z Source GX 349+2

We present the results of a BeppoSAX observation of the Z source GX 349+2 covering the energy range 0.1-200 keV. The presence of flares in the light curve indicates that the source was in the flaring branch during the BeppoSAX observation. We accumulated energy spectra separately for the non-flaring intervals and the flares. In both cases the continuum is well described by a soft blackbody ($k T_{BB} \sim 0.5$ keV) and a Comptonized spectrum corresponding to an electron temperature of $k T_e \sim 2.7$ keV, optical depth $\tau \sim 10$ (for a spherical geometry), and seed photon temperature of $k T_W \sim 1$ keV.
