Medium-modified jets in heavy-ion collisions

2010

The suppression of single inclusive hadron spectra in heavy-ion collision as compared to the scaled expectation from proton-proton collisions has long been regarded as an interesting tool to study properties of the bulk matter in heavy-ion collisions. However, the limitations of this class of observables has become increasingly obvious, and both experimental and theoretical efforts are now made to go beyond single hadrons to fully reconstructed jets. Monte-Carlo simulations of in-medium parton showers are currently considered the most promising tool to theoretically access jet physics in heavy-ion collisions. In this paper, I review some of the first results obtained with the MC code YaJEM …

Linking Jet Emission, X‐Ray States, and Hard X‐Ray Tails in the Neutron Star X‐Ray Binary GX 17 \documentclass{aastex} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackag…

2007

We present the results from simultaneous radio (Very Large Array) and X-ray (Rossi-X-ray Timing Explorer) observations of the Z-type neutron star X-ray binary GX~17+2. The aim is to assess the coupling between X-ray and radio properties throughout its three rapidly variable X-ray states and during the time-resolved transitions. These observations allow us, for the first time, to investigate quantitatively the possible relations between the radio emission and the presence of the hard X-ray tails and the X-ray state of the source. The observations show: 1) a coupling between the radio jet emission and the X-ray state of the source, i.e. the position in the X-ray hardness-intensity diagram (HI…

The diagnostic potential of Fe lines applied to protostellar jets

2013

We investigate the diagnostic capabilities of the iron lines for tracing the physical conditions of the shock-excited gas in jets driven by pre-main sequence stars. We have analyzed the 300-2500 nm X-shooter spectra of two jets driven by the pre-main sequence stars ESO-Halpha 574 and Par-Lup 3-4. Both spectra are very rich in [FeII] lines over the whole spectral range; in addition, lines from [FeIII] are detected in the ESO-H\alpha 574 spectrum. NLTE codes along with codes for the ionization equilibrium are used to derive the gas excitation conditions of electron temperature and density, and fractional ionization. The iron gas-phase abundance is provided by comparing the iron lines emissivi…

Energy and time-lag spectra of galactic black-hole X-ray sources in the low/hard state

2003

Most, probably all, accreting binaries that are believed to contain a black-hole emit radio waves when they are in the low/hard state. Whenever this radio emission has been resolved, a jet-like structure has become apparent. We propose that Compton upscattering of low-energy photons in the jet can explain both the energy spectra and the time lags versus Fourier frequency observed in the low/hard state of black-hole systems. The soft photons originate in the inner part of the accretion disk. We have performed Monte Carlo simulations of Compton upscattering in a jet and have found that for a rather wide range of values of the parameters we can obtain power-law high-energy X-ray spectra with p…

Dynamics of the transition from polarization disorder to antiphase polarization domains in vector fiber lasers

2014

We demonstrate that nonlinear polarization coupling in a fiber ring laser without polarization-selective elements, subject to the effects of average anomalous dispersion, Kerr effect, and nonlinear gain saturation, can lead to the antisynchronization of spatiotemporal chaos into a wide variety of ordered laminar states of orthogonal polarization temporal domains. These antiphase polarization domains include stable lattices of soliton trains with high duty cycle at repetition rates of hundreds of MHz, as well as sparse trains of coupled dark and bright solitary waves.

Hyperfine structure study of Tc97,98,99 in a new laser ion source for high-resolution laser spectroscopy

2020

Using a novel concept for efficient laser spectroscopy, we investigated the hyperfine splittings of three different atomic transitions in the long-lived isotopes $^{97\ensuremath{-}99}\mathrm{Tc}$. Despite the refractory character of the element technetium, sample sizes as low as ${10}^{11}$ atoms were sufficient to achieve excellent signal-to-noise ratios at a spectroscopic linewidth of less than 100 MHz. The obtained spectra were analyzed in detail, which results in a very good consistency for the extracted hyperfine parameters from the different transitions. The presented measurements provide the first hyperfine structure data for the isotopes $^{97,98}\mathrm{Tc}$ from which, in combina…

Experimental studies of the NaRb ground-state potential up to thev″=76level

2002

Laser induced fluorescence spectra of the C {sup 1}{sigma}{sup +}-X {sup 1}{sigma}{sup +} system of {sup 23}Na{sup 85}Rb and {sup 23}Na{sup 87}Rb have allowed vibrational levels of the electronic ground state up to v{sup ''}=76, spanning 99.85% of the potential well to be observed. The ground-state term values have been fitted to a Dunham polynomial expansion, and also to a direct modified Lennard-Jones (MLJ) potential. The analytical MLJ construction allowed us to match previous measured term values for v{sup ''}{<=}30 with long-range behavior of the potential through the intermediate internuclear distance region covered by the present investigation.

A re-analysis of the NuSTAR and XMM-Newton broad-band spectrum of Serpens X-1

2017

Context. High-resolution X-ray spectra of neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) in the energy range 6.4-6.97 keV are often characterized by the presence of K alpha transition features of iron at different ionization stages. Since these lines are thought to originate by reflection of the primary Comptonization spectrum over the accretion disk, the study of these features allows us to investigate the structure of the accretion flow close to the central source. Thus, the study of these features gives us important physical information on the system parameters and geometry. Ser X-1 is a well studied LMXB that clearly shows a broad iron line. Several attempts to fit this feature as a smear…

Monte Carlo Markov Chain DEM reconstruction of isothermal plasmas

2012

In this paper, we carry out tests on the Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) technique with the aim of determining: 1) its ability to retrieve isothermal plasmas from a set of spectral line intensities, with and without random noise; 2) to what extent can it discriminate between an isothermal solution and a narrow multithermal distribution; and 3) how well it can detect multiple isothermal components along the line of sight. We also test the effects of 4) atomic data uncertainties on the results, and 5) the number of ions whose lines are available for the DEM reconstruction. We find that the MCMC technique is unable to retrieve isothermal plasmas to better than Delta log T = 0.05. Also, the DEM…
