XMM-Newton X-ray spectroscopy of the high mass X-ray binary 4U 1700-37 at low flux

2004

We present results of a monitoring campaign of the high-mass X-ray binary system 4U 1700-37/HD 153919, carried out with XMM-Newton in February 2001. The system was observed at four orbital phase intervals, covering 37% of one 3.41-day orbit. The lightcurve includes strong flares, commonly observed in this source. We focus on three epochs in which the data are not affected by photon pile up: the eclipse, the eclipse egress and a low-flux interval in the lightcurve around orbital phase phi ~0.25. The high-energy part of the continuum is modelled as a direct plus a scattered component, each represented by a power law with identical photon index (alpha ~1.4), but with different absorption colum…

Symmetry-induced long-lived excited state inAu6−

2007

We present time-resolved photoelectron spectra in combination with quantum chemical calculations based on time-dependent density functional theory for the study of the long-lived excited state of ${\mathrm{Au}}_{6}^{\ensuremath{-}}$. The experimental spectra indicate an excited state lifetime of at least $90\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ns}$. It is shown that the orbital symmetry of the photoexcited state as well as the planarity of ${\mathrm{Au}}_{6}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ are responsible for the unusual long lifetime. A possible decay mechanism is the fluorescence of a photon which is estimated to take place on a time scale of $730\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ns}$.

Low-momentum direct-photon measurement in Cu + Cu collisions at sNN=200GeV

2018

We measured direct photons for pT<5GeV/c in minimum bias and 0%–40% most-central events at midrapidity for Cu+Cu collisions at sNN=200GeV. The e+e− contribution from quasireal direct virtual photons has been determined as an excess over the known hadronic contributions in the e+e− mass distribution. A clear enhancement of photons over the binary scaled p+p fit is observed for pT<4GeV/c in Cu+Cu data. The pT spectra are consistent with the Au+Au data covering a similar number of participants. The inverse slopes of the exponential fits to the excess after subtraction of the p+p baseline are 285±53(stat)±57(syst)MeV/c and 333±72(stat)±45(syst)MeV/c for minimum bias and 0%–40% most-central even…

Suppression of the frequency drifts in polarization modulational instability spectra by means of a photon reservoir

2012

By appropriately combining the effects of second- and fourth-order dispersion, and by carefully choosing the pump power, we create a photon reservoir which suppresses the drifts of sidebands in the spectra of polarization modulational instability

Spectral energy distribution and generalized Wien's law for photons and cosmic string loops

2014

Physical objects with energy $u_w(l) \sim l^{-3w}$ with $l$ characteristic length and $w$ a dimensionless constant, lead to an equation of state $p=w\rho$, with $p$ the pressure and $\rho$ the energy density. Special entities with thisbproperty are, for instance, photons ($u = hc/l$, with $l$ the wavelength) with $w = 1/3$, and some models of cosmic string loops ($u =(c^4/aG)l$, with $l$ the length of the loop and $a$ a numerical constant), with $w = -1/3$. Here, we discuss some features of the spectral energy distribution of these systems and the corresponding generalization of Wien's law, which in terms of $l$ has the form $Tl_{mp}^{3w}=constant$, being $l_{mp}$ the most probable size of …

Supersonic Magnetic Upflows in Granular Cells Observed with Sunrise/IMaX

2010

Using the IMaX instrument on-board the Sunrise stratospheric balloon-telescope we have detected extremely shifted polarization signals around the Fe I 5250.217 {\AA} spectral line within granules in the solar photosphere. We interpret the velocities associated with these events as corresponding to supersonic and magnetic upflows. In addition, they are also related to the appearance of opposite polarities and highly inclined magnetic fields. This suggests that they are produced by the reconnection of emerging magnetic loops through granular upflows. The events occupy an average area of 0.046 arcsec$^2$ and last for about 80 seconds, with larger events having longer lifetimes. These supersoni…

Spectroscopic variability of IRAS22272+5435

2015

A time series of high-resolution spectra was observed in the optical wavelength region for the bright proto-planetary nebula IRAS22272+5435 (HD235858), along with a simultaneous monitoring of its radial velocity and $BVR_C$ magnitudes. The object is known to vary in light, color, and velocity due to pulsation with a period of 132 days. The light and color variations are accompanied by significant changes in spectral features, most of which are identified as lines of carbon-bearing molecules. According to the observations, the $C_2$ Swan system and CN Red system lines are stronger near the light minimum. A photospheric spectrum of the central star was calculated using new self-consistent atm…

Control of multiphoton radiative recombination through the action of two low-frequency fields

2004

Interference effects caused by the simultaneous action of a two low frequency fields with commensurate frequencies during laser assisted radiative recombination (LARR) are investigated theoretically. Varying the relative phase of the two fields the following LARR features may be controlled: a) location of the maxima in the total emitted power; b) enhancement of the total emitted power; c) polar shape of the differential emitted power; d) shape of the emitted power spectra.

A new method to measure the wavelength of single-mode pulsed lasers with a scanning Michelson interferometer

1994

We report on the possibility to measure the wave-lengths of pulsed single-mode lasers by means of a two-beam Michelson interferometer in motion [1,2]. The corner reflector moves with a nearly constant speed creating a path differenceL so thatL/C ≪ 1/Δν, Δν being the spectral width of the laser to be measured. The reference laser is a stabilized He-Ne (Spectra-Physics, model 117 A) to a precision of the order of two parts in 109. The fringe pattern of the two beams (reference beam and measured beam) is sampled simultaneously with a repetition rate of 40 ms. With this new method, the frequency doubled injection-seeded Nd: YAG laser wavelength has been measured with an accuracy of the order of…

Coherence functions of the electrical and the optical noises in monomodal packaged vertical cavity surface emitting lasers

2006

Calculations of the frequency noise spectra and of the coherence functions between the electrical and the optical noises for a single-mode packaged vertical surface emitting laser (VCSEL) are reported.A rate-equation model for an index guided VCSEL is used, implemented with the electrical noise model including the intrinsic device, the package and external bias network. The extended model works up to the laser relaxation frequency. The amplitude optical noise and its correlation with the frequency and electrical noises are also analysed. The influence on the calculated quantities of some electrical and laser parameters is evaluated. The results show that generally the frequency noise is corr…
