Simultaneous recording of true and random coincidences using a two-parameter analyzer system

Abstract A description is given of a simple fast coincidence method which allows the simultaneous recording of coincidence and random coincidence spectra. The method is based on the properties of a standard two-parameter pulse-height analyzer system, and no special electronics is required.

SphinX: A fast solar Photometer in X-rays

The scientific goals and construction details of a new design, Polish X-ray spectrophotometer are given. It will be incorporated within the Russian TESIS X and EUV complex aboard the forthcoming CORO-NAS solar mission. SphinX (Solar Photometer in X-rays) will use PIN silicon detectors for high time resolution (0.01 s) measurements of the solar spectra of quiet and active corona in the range 0.5–15 keV. A new filter-fluorescence target concept will be employed to allow for a fast photometry of the solar X-ray flux variations in selected, well defined narrow spectral bands including the Fe XXVI and Fe XXV iron line groups.

Spin pumping in noncollinear antiferromagnets

The ac spin pumping of noncollinear antiferromagnets is theoretically investigated. Starting from an effective action description of the spin system, we derive the Onsager coefficients connecting the spin pumping and spin-transfer torque associated with the dynamics of the SO(3)-valued antiferromagnetic order parameter. Our theory is applied to a kagome antiferromagnet resonantly driven by a uniform external magnetic field. We demonstrate that the reactive (dissipative) spin-transfer torque parameter can be extracted from the pumped ac spin current in-phase (in quadrature) with the driving field. Lévy distributions and disorder in excitonic spectra.

We study analytically the spectrum of excitons in disordered semiconductors like transition metal dichalcogenides, which are important for photovoltaic and spintronic applications. We show that ambient disorder exerts a strong influence on the exciton spectra. For example, in such a case, the wellknown degeneracy of the hydrogenic problem (related to Runge–Lenz vector conservation) is lifted so that the exciton energy starts to depend on both the principal quantum number n and orbital l. Results from DROXO. II. - [Ne II] and X-ray emission from Rho Ophiuchi young stellar objects

The infrared [Ne II] and [Ne III] fine structure lines at 12.81um and 15.55um are predicted to trace the circumstellar disk gas subject to X-ray heating and ionization. We investigate the origin of these lines by comparing observations with models of X-ray irradiated disks and by searching for empirical correlations between the line luminosities and stellar and circumstellar parameters. We measure neon line fluxes and X-ray luminosities for 28 young stellar objects in the Rho Ophiuchi star formation region for which good quality infrared spectra and X-ray data have been obtained, the former with the Spitzer IRS and the latter with the Deep Rho Ophiuchi XMM-Newton Observation. The photospheric abundances of active binaries II. Atmospheric parameters and abundance patterns for 6 single-lined RS CVn systems

Photospheric parameters and abundances are presented for a sample of single-lined chromospherically active binaries from a differential LTE analysis of high-resolution spectra. Abundances have been derived for 13 chemical species, including several key elements such as Li, Mg, and Ca. Two methods have been used. The effective temperatures, surface gravities and microturbulent velocities were first derived from a fully self-consistent analysis of the spectra, whereby the temperature is determined from the excitation equilibrium of the Fe I lines. How to solve Fokker-Planck equation treating mixed eigenvalue spectrum?

An analogy of the Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) with the Schr\"odinger equation allows us to use quantum mechanics technique to find the analytical solution of the FPE in a number of cases. However, previous studies have been limited to the Schr\"odinger potential with a discrete eigenvalue spectrum. Here, we will show how this approach can be also applied to a mixed eigenvalue spectrum with bounded and free states. We solve the FPE with boundaries located at x=\pm L/2 and take the limit L\rightarrow\infty, considering the examples with constant Schr\"{o}dinger potential and with P\"{o}schl-Teller potential. Light-scattering spectra of supercooled molecular liquids

The light scattering spectra of molecular liquids are derived within a generalized hydrodynamics. The wave vector and scattering angle dependences are given in the most general case and the change of the spectral features from liquid to solidlike is discussed without phenomenological model assumptions for (general) dielectric systems without long-ranged order. Exact microscopic expressions are derived for the frequency-dependent transport kernels, generalized thermodynamic derivatives and the background spectra.

Young ages and other intriguing properties of massive compact galaxies in the local Universe

We characterize the kinematics, morphology, stellar populations and star formation histories of a sample of massive compact galaxies in the nearby Universe, which might provide a closer look at the nature of their high-redshift (z  >rsim 1.0) massive counterparts. We find that nearby compact massive objects show elongated morphologies and are fast rotators. New high-quality long-slit spectra show that they have young mean luminosity-weighted ages (2 Gyr) and metallicities solar or above ([Z/H] >rsim 0.0). A New Non-stationary Channel Model Based on Drifted Brownian Random Paths

This paper utilizes Brownian motion (BM) processes with drift to model mobile radio channels under non-stationary conditions. It is assumed that the mobile station (MS) starts moving in a semi-random way, but subject to follow a given direction. This moving scenario is modelled by a BM process with drift (BMD). The starting point of the movement is a fixed point in the two-dimensional (2D) propagation area, while its destination is a random point along a predetermined drift.
