Swift Observations of GRB 070110: An Extraordinary X-Ray Afterglow Powered by the Central Engine

2007

We present a detailed analysis of Swift multi-wavelength observations of GRB 070110 and its remarkable afterglow. The early X-ray light curve, interpreted as the tail of the prompt emission, displays a spectral evolution already seen in other gamma-ray bursts. The optical afterglow shows a shallow decay up to ~2 d after the burst, which is not consistent with standard afterglow models. The most intriguing feature is a very steep decay in the X-ray flux at ~20 ks after the burst, ending an apparent plateau. The abrupt drop of the X-ray light curve rules out an external shock as the origin of the plateau in this burst and implies long-lasting activity of the central engine. The temporal and s…

High-resolution spectroscopy of two carbon stars with long-term obscuration events

2012

In this paper, we provide an analysis of the high-resolution optical spectra of two carbon variables, V1983 Cyg and V2074 Cyg, which are presumed to be cool R Corona Borealis (RCB) stars, according to their photometric behaviour. The stars show irregular long-term visual light variations of relatively large amplitude, similar to those exhibited by RCB variables. Based on the comparison of our high-resolution spectra with those of various carbon stars, we conclude that both variables have spectral properties typical for cool N-type carbon stars. However, two major differences from the spectra of normal carbon stars have been noted: the presence of high-velocity (∼−60 km s−1) components in th…

Signatures of pulsations and mass loss in the spectra of post-AGB stars

2011

AbstractThe results of high-resolution spectroscopy and radial velocity monitoringa are presented for selected post-AGB candidate stars. Time series of high-resolution spectra for HD235858 shows spliting of low-excitation atomic lines and significant changes in the intensity of C2 and CN lines originated in the extended atmosphere significantly affected by pulsations and outflow. Mass ejection was confirmed for cool R CrB candidate stars DY Per, V1983 Cyg, and V2074 Cyg.

Basic Physical Concepts

2010

Mossbauer spectroscopy is based on recoilless emission and resonant absorption of γ-radiation by atomic nuclei. The aim of this chapter is to familiarize the reader with the concepts of nuclear γ-resonance and the Mossbauer effect, before we describe the experiments and relevant electric and magnetic hyperfine interactions in Chaps. 3 and 4. We prefer doing this by collecting formulae without deriving them; comprehensive and instructive descriptions have already been given at length in a number of introductory books ([7–39] in Chap. 1). Readers who are primarily interested in understanding their Mossbauer spectra without too much physical ballast may skip this chapter at first reading and p…

Probing spectral properties of the QGP with real-time lattice simulations

2018

We present a new method to obtain spectral properties of a non-Abelian gauge theory in the region where occupation numbers are high. The method to measure the (single-particle) spectral function is based on linear response theory and classical-statistical lattice simulations. Although we apply it to a system far from equilibrium in a self-similar regime, the extracted spectral function can be understood within the hard thermal loop (HTL) formalism and can thus be connected to thermal equilibrium at high temperatures. This allows us to obtain quantities like the lifetime of quasiparticles that are beyond the leading order and difficult to compute within HTL. The approach has the potential to…

Analytical description of resonances in Fabry–Perot and whispering gallery mode resonators

2021

Whispering gallery mode optical resonators have attracted attention due to their simplicity and applicability for sensing. In this paper, analytical formulas are provided that describe resonance conditions in optical resonators. Basic terms (resonance wavelengths and frequencies, free spectral range, Q -factor, summation principle of Q -factors of various processes, finesse, etc.) are introduced. A description of interference of an infinite number of waves of progressively smaller amplitudes and equal phase differences is given. A description of a Fabry–Perot resonator with nonequal reflection coefficients is also given as well as analysis of all-pass and add-drop optical filters. The prese…

The following article appeared in Journal of Chemical Physics 2015, 142 and may be found at http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4913634 We present an updated semi-experimental absolute shielding scale for the 17O and 33S nuclei. These new shielding scales are based on accurate rotational microwave data for the spin–rotation constants of H2 17O [Puzzarini et al., J. Chem. Phys. 131, 234304 (2009)], C17O [Cazzoli et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 4, 3575 (2002)], and H2 33S [Helgaker et al., J. Chem. Phys. 139, 244308 (2013)] corrected both for v…

Measurement of the higher-order anisotropic flow coefficients for identified hadrons in Au + Au collisions atsNN=200GeV

2016

Measurements of the anisotropic flow coefficients v2{Ψ2},v3{Ψ3},v4{Ψ4}, and v4{Ψ2} for identified particles (π±,K±, and p+p) at midrapidity, obtained relative to the event planes Ψm at forward rapidities in Au + Au collisions at sNN=200GeV, are presented as a function of collision centrality and particle transverse momenta pT. The vn coefficients show characteristic patterns consistent with hydrodynamical expansion of the matter produced in the collisions. For each harmonic n, a modified valence quark-number Nq scaling [plotting vn{Ψm}/(Nq)n/2 versus transverse kinetic energies (KET)/Nq] is observed to yield a single curve for all the measured particle species for a broad range of KET. A si…

Photoelectron spectra from first principles: from the many-body to the single-particle picture

2008

We derive a many-body method to evaluate photoelectron spectra of atoms, molecules and clusters from first principles. The excitation energies and the spectroscopic factors are calculated from the linear-response time-dependent density functional theory. The method is applied to noble metal anions, anionic clusters and to neutral small molecules. Our approach shows significant improvement over a simple single-particle treatment and gives an insight into the necessary conditions under which the single-particle picture holds. The consideration of the spectroscopic factor is shown to be crucial for the correct description of inner valence photoelectron peaks.
