61Ni Mössbauer study of the surface hyperfine magnetic field in nickel

61Ni Mossbauer measurements have been performed at 4.2 K on spherical Ni particles with an average diameter of 100 and 30 A, covered with a protective layer of SiO. Their spectra contain a surface component with a significantly reduced hyperfine magnetic field as compared with the field in the bulk. This result confirms recent theoretical predictions.

Theory of positronium momentum spectra at metallic surfaces

1986

Theoretical calculations of momentum distributions of positronium (Ps) atoms ejected from clean metal surfaces are presented and compared with recent experimental results. The authors find that the momentum dependence of the Ps-forming interaction significantly affects the shape of the spectra. They also show that, within the model, the energy distribution of Ps atoms does not vary directly with the density of electronic states just outside the surface.

Automatic correction of the effects of the light source on spherical objects. An application to the analysis of hyperspectral images of citrus fruits

This study proposes a method for correcting the adverse effects produced by the curvature of spherical objects in acquiring images with a computer vision system. Its suitability has been illustrated in a specific case of citrus fruits. The images of this kind of fruit are darker in areas nearer the edge than in the centre, and this makes them more difficult to analyse. This methodology considers the fruit as being a Lambertian ellipsoidal surface and produces a 3D model of the fruit. Land surface emissivity retrieval from airborne sensor over urban areas

Abstract In this paper we compare three different methodologies to retrieve land surface emissivity (LSE) over urban areas: the NDVI thresholds method, the temperature and emissivity separation (TES) algorithm and the temperature independent spectral indices (TISI) algorithm. The methodologies were applied to the Airborne Hyperspectral Scanner (AHS) imagery acquired during the Dual-use European Security IR Experiment 2008 (DESIREX 2008) experimental campaign over the city of Madrid (Spain). Evaluation of the orientation distribution of fibers from reflection images of fibrous samples

We consider illumination systems and mathematical algorithms for determination of the anisotropy and topographical features of an illuminated surface from its reflection images. As a particular example we study determination of the fiber orientation of paper surface. We also consider illumination systems with multiple light sources, and introduce optimization algorithms that exploit different spectral bands of these light sources. We show that a system of three light sources, e.g., a blue, green and red LED placed in a regular triangular form, efficiently prevents distortion of the above features. The REFLEX galaxy cluster survey VIII. Spectroscopic observations and optical atlas

We present the final data from the spectroscopic survey of the ROSAT-ESO Flux-Limited X-ray (REFLEX) catalog of galaxy clusters. The REFLEX survey covers 4.24 steradians (34% of the entire sky) below a declination of 2.5 deg and at high Galactic latitude (|b| > 20 deg). The REFLEX catalog includes 447 entries with a median redshift of 0.08 and is better than 90% complete to a limiting flux fx = 3x10^{-12} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} (0.1 to 2.4 keV), representing the largest statistically homogeneous sample of clusters drawn from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) to date. Properties of Swift's intermediate bursts

Based on their prompt, high-energy emission, gamma-ray bursts are usually classified into short-duration and long-duration classes. A third intermediate group has been identified on statistical grounds but its individual properties have not yet been studied in detail. Using the large sample of follow-up observations of GRBs produced during the Swift era we analyze the individual characteristics of this group. We find that intermediate bursts are significantly different from short GRBs but share many properties with long bursts, probably pointing to a common progenitor type. Swift observations of GRB 060614: an anomalous burst with a well behaved afterglow

GRB 060614 is a remarkable GRB observed by Swift with puzzling properties, which challenge current progenitor models. The lack of any bright SN down to very strict limits and the vanishing spectral lags are typical of short GRBs, strikingly at odds with the long (102s) duration of this event. Here we present spectral and temporal analysis of the Swift observations. We show that the burst presents standard optical, UV and X-ray afterglows. An achromatic break is observed simultaneously in optical and X-rays, at a time consistent with the break in the R-band light curve measured by the VLT. Compressed electroweakino spectra at the LHC

In this work, we examine the sensitivity of monojet searches at the LHC to directly produced charginos and neutralinos (electroweakinos) in the limit of small mass splitting, where the traditional multilepton plus missing energy searches loose their sensitivity. We first recast the existing 8 TeV monojet search at CMS in terms of a SUSY simplified model with only light gauginos (winos and binos) or only light higgsinos. The current searches are not sensitive to MSSM like production cross sections, but would be sensitive to models with 2-20 times enhanced production cross section, for particle masses between 100 GeV and 250 GeV. Emissivity errors in the vegetation cover method caused by the lack of atmospheric correction

The influence of the lack of atmospheric correction of the optical images used to calculate land surface emissivity (LSE) was assessed. When thermal emissivity is determined by the vegetation cover method (VCM), information from the solar spectrum is required to calculate the vegetation cover fraction. The atmospheric correction was obtained in this study by using a combination of the dark dense vegetation (DDV) method and the Second Simulation of the Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum (6S) code.
