Norm-inflation results for purely BBM-type Boussinesq systems

2022

This article is concerned with the norm-inflation phenomena associated with a periodic initial-value abcd-Benjamin-Bona-Mahony type Boussinesq system. We show that the initial-value problem is ill-posed in the periodic Sobolev spaces H−sp (0, 2π)×H−sp (0, 2π) for all s > 0. Our proof is constructive, in the sense that we provide smooth initial data that generates solutions arbitrarily large in H−sp (0, 2π) × H−sp (0, 2π)-norm for arbitrarily short time. This result is sharp since in [15] the well-posedness is proved to holding for all positive periodic Sobolev indexes of the form Hsp (0, 2π) × Hsp (0, 2π), including s = 0. peerReviewed

Measuring High-Order Interactions in Rhythmic Processes Through Multivariate Spectral Information Decomposition

2021

Many complex systems in physics, biology and engineering are modeled as dynamical networks and described using multivariate time series analysis. Recent developments have shown that the emergent dynamics of a network system are significantly affected by interactions involving multiple network nodes which cannot be described using pairwise links. While these higher-order interactions can be probed using information-theoretic measures, a rigorous framework to describe them in the frequency domain is still lacking. This work presents an approach for the spectral decomposition of multivariate information measures, capable of identifying higher-order synergistic and redundant interactions betwee…

Spectroscopic Observations of the Delta Scorpii Binary during Its Recent Periastron Passage

2001

The bright star delta Sco has been considered a typical B0-type object for many years. Spectra of the star published prior to 1990 showed no evidence of emission, but only of short-term line profile variations attributed to nonradial pulsations. Speckle interferometric observations show that delta Sco is a binary system with a highly-eccentric orbit and a period of 10.6 years. Weak emission in the H-alpha line was detected in its spectrum for the first time during a periastron passage in 1990. Shortly before the next periastron passage in the summer of 2000, the binary entered a strong H-alpha emission and enhanced mass loss phase. We monitored the spectroscopic development of the Be outbur…

ARES I: WASP-76 b, A Tale of Two HST Spectra

2020

We analyse the transmission and emission spectra of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-76b, observed with the G141 grism of the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3). We reduce and fit the raw data for each observation using the open-source software Iraclis before performing a fully Bayesian retrieval using the publicly available analysis suite TauRex 3. Previous studies of the WFC3 transmission spectra of WASP-76 b found hints of titanium oxide (TiO) and vanadium oxide (VO) or non-grey clouds. Accounting for a fainter stellar companion to WASP-76, we reanalyse this data and show that removing the effects of this background star changes the slope of the spectrum, resulting in these vi…

Imation of land surface emissivity differences in the split-window channels of AVHRR

1994

Abstract A method for estimating the difference between the channel emissivities in NOAA-AVHRR Channels 4 and 5 is proposed and applied to a data set from the HAPEX-MOBILHY experiment. The method is based on the separation between the atmospheric and emissivity effects in the brightness temperature difference measured with AVHRR Channels 4 and 5. Atmospheric profiles coincident to the satellite overpass and a radiative transfer model are required to estimate the atmospheric correction for brightness temperatures. With this procedure, the emissivity difference Δe is obtained at the satellite spatial and spectral resolution, which has a great interest for correcting thermal images with the sp…

Long-term optical and X-ray variability of the Be/X-ray binary H 1145-619: Discovery of an ongoing retrograde density wave

2017

Multiwavelength monitoring of Be/X-ray binaries is crucial to understand the mechanisms producing their outbursts. H 1145-619 is one of these systems, which has recently displayed X-ray activity. We investigate the correlation between the optical emission and the X-ray activity to predict the occurrence of new X-ray outbursts from the inferred state of the circumstellar disc. We have performed a multiwavelength study of H 1145-619 from 1973 to 2017 and present here a global analysis of its variability over the last 40 years. We have used optical spectra from the SAAO, SMARTS and SALT telescopes and optical photometry from INTEGRAL/OMC and ASAS. We also used X-ray observations from INTEGRAL/…

Evaluation of the DART 3D model in the thermal domain using satellite/airborne imagery and ground-based measurements

2011

This work provides an evaluation of the discrete anisotropy radiative transfer (DART) three-dimensional (3D) model in assessing the simulation of directional brightness temperatures (Tb) at both sensor and surface levels. Satellite imagery acquired with the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), airborne imagery acquired with the Airborne Hyperspectral Scanner (AHS) sensor and ground-based measurements collected over an agricultural area were used to evaluate the DART model at nadir views. Directional radiometric temperatures measured with a goniometric system at ground level were also used to evaluate modelling results at different view angles. The DART mod…

The large-scale magnetic field of the eccentric pre-main-sequence binary system V1878 Ori

2020

We report time-resolved, high-resolution optical spectropolarimetric observations of the young double-lined spectroscopic binary V1878 Ori. Our observations were collected with the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope through the BinaMIcS large programme. V1878 Ori A and B are partially convective intermediate mass weak-line T Tauri stars on an eccentric and asynchronous orbit. We also acquired X-ray observations at periastron and outside periastron. Using the least-squares deconvolution technique (LSD) to combine information from many spectral lines, we clearly detected circular polarization signals in both components throughout the orbit. We refined the orbita…

A generalized soil-adjusted vegetation index

2002

Operational monitoring of vegetative cover by remote sensing currently involves the utilisation of vegetation indices (VIs), most of them being functions of the reflectance in red (R) and near-infrared (NIR) spectral bands. A generalized soil-adjusted vegetation index (GESAVI), theoretically based on a simple vegetation canopy model, is introduced. It is defined in terms of the soil line parameters (A and B) as: GESAVI=(NIRBRA)/(R+Z), where Z is related to the red reflectance at the cross point between the soil line and vegetation isolines. As Z is a soil adjustment coefficient, this new index can be considered as belonging to the SAVI family. In order to analyze the GESAVI sensitivity to s…

The hyperfine structure in the rotational spectra of bromofluoromethane: Lamb-dip technique and quantum-chemical calculations

2008

International audience; The hyperfine structure in the rotational spectra of six isotopic species of bromofluoromethane, namely CH2{79}BrF, CH2{81}BrF, CDH{79}BrF, CDH{81}BrF, CD2{79}BrF, and CD2{81}BrF, has been investigated using the Lamb-dip technique in the submillimeter-wave frequency range. Measurements as well as assignment procedures have been supported by high-level quantum-chemical calculations of the hyperfine parameters at the coupled-cluster level. For all species, the accuracy of the determined rotational and centrifugal distortion constants as well as the bromine quadrupole-coupling constants have been improved with respect to available literature data, whereas the full bromi…
