If sterile neutrinos exist, how can one determine the total solar neutrino fluxes?

2002

The 8B solar neutrino flux inferred from a global analysis of solar neutrino experiments is within 11% (1 sigma) of the predicted standard solar model value if only active neutrinos exist, but could be as large as 1.7 times the standard prediction if sterile neutrinos exist. We show that the total 8B neutrino flux (active plus sterile neutrinos) can be determined experimentally to about 10% (1 sigma) by combining charged current measurements made with the KamLAND reactor experiment and with the SNO CC solar neutrino experiment, provided the LMA neutrino oscillation solution is correct and the simulated performance of KamLAND is valid. Including also SNO NC data, the sterile component of the…

Heavy neutrino searches at the lhc with displaced vertices

2013

Sterile neutrinos with masses in the range (1-100) GeV, have been searched for in a variety of experiments. Here, we discuss the prospects to search for sterile neutrinos at the LHC using displaced vertices. Two different cases are discussed: (i) the standard model extended with sterile neutrinos and (ii) right-handed neutrinos in a left-right symmetric extension of the standard model. A dedicated displaced vertex search will allow to probe parts of the parameter space not accessible to other searches, but will require large luminosity in both cases.

Isosinglet-neutral heavy-lepton production in Z-decays and neutrino mass

1990

Abstract The possible existence of NHLs is often related to neutrino mass. As a result their production cross section may be correspondingly constrained by observational limits on neutrino masses. We analyze the discovery potential of isosinglet NHLs within various models taking also into account cosmological limits on relic neutrino abundances.

Present Knowledge of the Lepton Mixing Matrix from Neutrino Oscillation Experiments

1986

An analysis of experimental results in the framework of simultaneous oscillations of three neutrino flavours is used, in a combined fit, to constrain the elements of the 3 × 3 unitary lepton mixing matrix and to obtain limits on the three lepton mixing angles αeμ, αe τ and αμτ.

10.2 Discrete Symmetries

2008

1. The asymmetry of the zenith angle distribution of νμ of Super-Kamiokande is the direct evidence of νμ oscillations. 2. The first oscillation minimum was observed in the L/E distribution using the high resolution L/E sample of Super-Kamiokande. It confirms that the distortion of the zenith angle distribution is really due to neutrino oscillations and excludes other hypotheses such as neutrino decay and decoherence model. 3. A search for charged current (CC) interaction of ντ shows a 2.4σ excess of signal and the observed number of events is consistent with the expectation. 4. No indication of νe oscillation is observed so far in atmospheric neutrinos.

A Flux-Split Algorithm Applied to Relativistic Flows

1998

The equations of RFD can be written as a hyperbolic system of conservation laws by choosing an appropriate vector of unknowns. We give an explicit formulation of the full spectral decomposition of the Jacobian matrices associated with the fluxes in each spatial direction, which is the essential ingredient of the techniques we propose in this paper. These techniques are based on the recently derived flux formula of Marquina, a new way to compute the numerical flux at a cell interface which leads to a conservative, upwind numerical scheme. Using the spectral decompositions in a fundamental way, we construct high order versions of the basic first-order scheme described by R. Donat and A. Marqu…

A semi-Lagrangian AMR scheme for 2D transport problems in conservation form

2013

In this paper, we construct a semi-Lagrangian (SL) Adaptive-Mesh-Refinement (AMR) solver for 1D and 2D transport problems in conservation form. First, we describe the a-la-Harten AMR framework: the adaptation process selects a hierarchical set of grids with different resolutions depending on the features of the integrand function, using as criteria the point value prediction via interpolation from coarser meshes, and the appearance of large gradients. We integrate in time by reconstructing at the feet of the characteristics through the Point-Value Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (PV-WENO) interpolator. We propose, then, an extension to the 2D setting by making the time integration dime…

A Rotor Flux and Speed Observer for Sensorless Single-Phase Induction Motor Applications

2012

It is usual to find single-phase induction motor (SPIM) in several house, office, shopping, farm, and industry applications, which are become each time more sophisticated and requiring the development of efficient alternatives to improve the operational performance of this machine. Although the rotor flux and rotational speed are essential variables in order to optimize the operation of a SPIM, the use of conventional sensors to measure them is not a viable option. Thus, the adoption of sensorless strategies is the more reasonable proposal for these cases. This paper presents a rotor flux and rotational speed observer for sensorless applications involving SPIMs. Computer simulations and the…

Modelling Airlines Competition on Fares and Frequencies of Service by Bi-level Optimization

2011

Abstract The research aims to understand how airlines make operative decisions on fares and frequencies of service in a competitive envi-ronment. A game approach has been developed to model the airlines’ choices in a duopolistic market. In particular, the short haul market for intercity linkages has been investigated. In this segment the air mode is in competition with other ground modes (i.e. road and high speed rail). A bi-level optimization program has been realized. The variables of model are: fares and frequencies of airlines.

Power Profiles and In Vitro Optical Quality of Scleral Contact Lenses: Effect of the Aperture and Power

2017

To assess the power profile and in vitro optical quality of scleral contact lenses with different powers as a function of the optical aperture. The mini and semiscleral contact lenses (Procornea) were measured for five powers per design. The NIMO TR-1504 (Lambda-X) was used to assess the power profile and Zernike coefficients of each contact lens. Ten measurements per lens were taken at 3- and 6-mm apertures. Furthermore, the optical quality of each lens was described in Zernike coefficients, modulation transfer function, and point spread function (PSF). A convolution of each lens PSF with an eye-chart image was also computed. The optical power fluctuated less than 0.5 diopters (D) along th…
