Joint interpretation of seismic refraction tomography and electrical resistivity tomography by cluster analysis to detect buried cavities

2020

Abstract In the last few years, the geophysical methods of seismic refraction tomography (SRT) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) are among the most used geophysical techniques for the reconstruction of subsoil geometries, for the investigation of underground cavities and also for the archaeological prospecting. However, the main disadvantage of each geophysical method is the difficulty of final interpretation of the data. In order to eliminate artifacts and generally improve the reliability and accuracy of geophysical interpretation, it is useful to perform a joint approach of different geophysical methods, also introducing the a priori information. In this work, it is shown the i…

Individuazione di cavità attraverso tomografie elettriche e sismiche

2020

Nitrous oxide from integrated fixed-film activated sludge membrane bioreactor: Assessing the influence of operational variables

2017

The influence of the main operational variables on N2O emissions from an Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge University of Cape Town membrane Bioreactor pilot plant was studied. Nine operational cycles (total duration: 340 days) were investigated by varying the value of the mixed liquor sludge retention time (SRT) (Cycles 1–3), the feeding ratio between carbon and nitrogen (C/N) (Cycles 4–6) and simultaneously the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and the SRT (Cycles 7–9). Results show a huge variability of the N2O concentration in liquid and off-gas samples (ranged from 10−1μg N2O-N L−1to 103μg N2O-N L−1). The maximum N2O concentration (1228 μg N2O-N L−1) in the off-gas sa…

Achieving complete nitrification below the washout SRT with hybrid membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) treating municipal wastewater

2021

This study analyzed the performances of a hybrid membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) pilot plant in terms of nutrients removal of the attached growth and suspended biomass in comparison with a conventional activated sludge (CAS) system at different sludge retention time (SRT) (20−3) days. Overall, the MABR showed better performances than the CAS in terms of TSS (86% vs 79%), COD (89% vs 85%) and total nitrogen (80% vs 65%). The minimum SRT for achieving complete nitrification in the MABR was close to 3 days, corresponding to a SRT in the aerobic compartment of 1.9 days, whereas in the CAS it was equal to 8 days (aerobic SRT of 4.8 days). Nitrification rate in biofilm was on average equa…

The Ferroelectric Photo-Groundstate of SrTiO$_3$: Cavity Materials Engineering

2021

Significance Controlling collective phenomena in quantum materials is a promising route toward engineering material properties on demand. Strong THz lasers have been successful at inducing ferroelectricity in S r T i O 3 . Here we demonstrate, from atomistic calculations, that cavity quantum vacuum fluctuations induce a change in the collective phase of S r T i O 3 in the strong light–matter coupling regime. Under these conditions, the ferroelectric phase is stabilized as the ground state, instead of the quantum paraelectric one. We conceptualize this light–matter hybrid state as a material photo ground state: Fundamental properties such as crystal structure, phonon frequencies, and the col…

Effects of low-gamma tACS on primary motor cortex in implicit motor learning

2019

Abstract In the primary motor cortex (M1), rhythmic activity in the gamma frequency band has been found during movement planning, onset and execution. Although the role of high-gamma oscillatory activity in M1 is well established, the contribution of low-gamma activity is still unexplored. In this study, transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) was used with the aim to specifically modulate low-gamma frequency band in M1, during an implicit motor learning task. A 40 Hz-tACS was applied over the left M1 while participants performed a serial reaction time task (SRTT) using their right hand. The task required the repetitive execution of sequential movements in response to sequences …
