Monitoring Training Adaptation With a Submaximal Running Test in Field Conditions
2016
Regular monitoring of adaptation to training is important for optimizing training load and recovery, which is the main factor in successful training. Purpose: To investigate the usefulness of a novel submaximal running test (SRT) in field conditions in predicting and tracking changes of endurance performance. Methods: Thirty-five endurance-trained men and women (age 20–55 y) completed the 18-wk endurance-training program. A maximal incremental running test was performed at weeks 0, 9, and 18 for determination of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and running speed (RS) at exhaustion (RSpeak) and lactate thresholds (LTs). In addition, the subjects performed weekly a 3-stage SRT including a …

Optimization of the performance of an air–cathode MFC by changing solid retention time
2017
BACKGROUND This work is focused on the optimization of the performances of air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFC) by changing the solid retention time (SRT) of the suspended biomass culture. RESULTS Five MFCs inoculated with activated sludge obtained from a municipal wastewater treatment plant were fed with a highly-concentrated acetate solution (10 000 ppm COD) and operated over two-month tests in order to determine how SRT may influence the performances of the bio-electrogenic cells. The MFC operated at SRTs of 2.5 days was found to outperform the other cells, operated at SRT of 1.4, 5.0, 7.4 and 10.0 days. In order to evaluate the possibility of using SRT as a manipulated parameter for t…

Diritto: ponte o muro dell'integrazione?
2020
Nitrous oxide from integrated fixed-film activated sludge membrane bioreactor: Assessing the influence of operational variables
2017
The influence of the main operational variables on N2O emissions from an Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge University of Cape Town membrane Bioreactor pilot plant was studied. Nine operational cycles (total duration: 340 days) were investigated by varying the value of the mixed liquor sludge retention time (SRT) (Cycles 1â3), the feeding ratio between carbon and nitrogen (C/N) (Cycles 4â6) and simultaneously the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and the SRT (Cycles 7â9). Results show a huge variability of the N2O concentration in liquid and off-gas samples (ranged from 10â1μg N2O-N Lâ1to 103μg N2O-N Lâ1). The maximum N2O concentration (1228 μg N2O-N Lâ1) in the off-gas sa…
Space-Time Forecasting of Seismic Events in Chile
2017
The aim of this work is to study the seismicity in Chile using the ETAS (epidemic type aftershock sequences) space‐time approach. The proposed ETAS model is estimated using a semi‐parametric technique taking into account the parametric and nonparametric components corresponding to the triggered and background seismicity, respectively. The model is then used to predict the temporal and spatial intensity of events for some areas of Chile where recent large earthquakes (with magnitude greater than 8.0 M) occurred.
2005
This research is concerned with the implicit learning of regularities in continuous motor tasks (e.g., tracking tasks) and discrete tasks (e.g., Serial Reaction Time tasks). First, a reanalysis of Wulf and collaborator's studies, dealing with implicit motor learning, made it possible to highlight methodological problems and potential biases that provide alternative explanations for the apparent implicit learning obtained in their continuous tracking experiments. Indeed, by respecting a more rigorous methodology, it appears that it is quite difficult to obtain such learning in a continuous task. This led us to try to understand why it was easier to draw benefit from a repetition in a discret…
