Technical and surgical aspects of the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) microstimulator insertion procedure

2015

Cluster headache (CH) is a debilitating, severe form of headache. A novel non-systemic therapy has been developed that produces therapeutic electrical stimulation to the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG). A transoral surgical technique for inserting the Pulsante SPG Microstimulator into the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) is presented herein. Technical aspects include detailed descriptions of the preoperative planning using computed tomography or cone beam computed tomography scans for presurgical digital microstimulator insertion into the patient specific anatomy and intraoperative verification of microstimulator placement. Surgical aspects include techniques to insert the microstimulator into the…

Behavioural Cardiology at the Department of Psychology, Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, Germany

2008

Abstract. We provide a short overview of the research in Behavioural Cardiology at the Department of Psychology at the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz focussing on two lines of research: Studies of psychosocial variables that might enhance or attenuate cardiovascular risk in healthy individuals and studies of psychosocial variables and health behaviours that might impact the health status of patients listed for heart transplantation. Our studies so far suggest that psychosocial factors like anxiety and repressive coping impact information processing and cardiovascular responses to stress. Moreover, we examine the impact of health-protective resource variables including self-efficacy an…

Knowledge and attitudes towards smoking cessation counselling: an Italian cross-sectional survey on tertiary care nursing staff

2021

Background One of the most effective smoking cessation strategies involves care and advice from nurses due to their role in the front line of treatment. Lack of education on smoking cessation counselling may be detrimental, and adequate smoking cessation training during healthcare studies is needed. Objectives The study aimed to examine nurses’ attitudes, belief, and knowledge of smoking cessation counselling; knowledge of the health risks associated with smoking was also assessed. Design A cross-sectional survey on 77 nurses from the nursing staff of Cardiology, Cardiac Intensive Care and Surgical Oncology Units of two tertiary hospitals. Methods Cronbach’s alpha was calculated to assess …

Childhood maltreatment and clinical severity of treatment‐resistant depression in a French cohort of outpatients (FACE‐DR): One‐year follow‐up

2020

International audience; Childhood maltreatment is associated with major depressive disorder (MDD). It not only increases the risk of lifetime MDD, but it also aggravates its course. Among depressed patients, 20-30% of them experience treatment-resistance depression (TRD). We aimed to assess the association between childhood maltreatment, severity of depression in a unipolar TRD sample, and patient outcomes after one-year of follow-up. Methods: Patients were recruited for a prospective cohort from the French network of TRD expert centers. Depressive symptom severity was assessed with the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology se…

WE-C-141-01: Research and Relevance of Brachytherapy Dose Calculation Advancements

2013

Research and Relevance of Brachytherapy Dose Calculation Advancements Organizer: Mark J. Rivard Moderator: Geoffrey S. Ibbott Speakers: Facundo Ballester, Asa Carlsson Tedgren, Firas Mourtada Brachytherapy dosimetry is undergoing a renaissance with the scrutiny of the AAPM TG‐43 dose calculation formalism and comparisons with alternate approaches such as the Monte Carlo method, the grid‐based Boltzmann solvers, and the collapsed‐cone technique. Treatment planning systems (TPS) using these more advanced, model‐based dose calculation algorithms (MBDCAs) are now available for clinical use. However, their accuracy and the preferred method for their use have not been established. Thus, it is imp…

Therapeutic dosages of oral or transdermal estradiol did not modify sCD40L levels in postmenopausal women.

2008

The CD40/CD40L system is considered a crucial modulator of the inflammatory process underlying the progression and complication of atheroma plaques. The soluble fraction of CD40L (sCD40L) is a reliable indicator of the CD40/CD40L system. Our purpose was to investigate whether a therapeutic dose of estradiol, by either the oral or the transdermal route, was associated with changes in circulating levels of sCD40L. Forty-seven women completed a 4-week course of treatment with either oral estradiol valerate (2 mg/day, 20 women) or transdermal estradiol (50 microg/day, 27 women). Serum levels of sCD40L were measured by conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Oral, but not transdermal est…

Diflubenzuron-Induced alterations during in vitro development ofTenebrio molitor pupal integument

1987

The effects of diflubenzuron (DFB) in Tenebrio molitor pupae were first investigated on cuticle secretion induced by 20-hydroxyecdysone in vitro. The sternal integuments were treated by DFB either 3 days before culture or during culture. DFB, when applied before culture, did not prevent the molting hormone from inducing a new cuticle deposition by integument explants in vitro. However, this cuticle showed several architectural alterations and a thickness reduction. When applied during the culture in the presence of 20-hydroxyecdysone, DFB at high dose (≥ 20 μg/ml) was able to inhibit cuticle secretion, but lower doses (⩽ 10 μg/ml) resulted in epicuticle deposition. These observations confir…

Tartrate-Resistant Acid Phosphatase 5b: A Novel Serum Marker of Bone Resorption

2000

Human serum contains two forms of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), 5a and 5b. Of these, 5a contains sialic acid and 5b does not. We show here that antigenic properties and pH optimum of TRAP purified from human osteoclasts are identical to those of serum TRAP 5b and completely different from those of serum TRAP 5a, suggesting that 5b would be derived from osteoclasts and 5a from some other source. We developed a novel immunoassay specific for 5b using a monoclonal antibody O1A as capture antibody. O1A did not bind acid phosphatase derived from platelets and erythrocytes. Western analysis showed that O1A was specific for TRAP in both human bone and serum. We measured bound TRAP ac…
