Mössbauer Spectroscopy and Organotin Polymers

Mössbauer spectroscopy allows the structural analysis of certain metal atoms situated in complex structures. Briefly, Mössbauer spectroscopy is a resonant absorption spectroscopy that is observed best in isotopes having long lived, low-lying excited nuclear energy states. The largest recoil-free resonant cross-section is found for 57Fe. Currently, Mössbauer spectroscopy is being used on Mars to identify iron compounds that are present in the Martian landscape. There are over 20,000 entries in SciFinder for Mössbauer spectroscopy, of which the two largest entries are for iron and tin containing compounds. Solid State Analysis of Metal-Containing Polymers Employing Mossbauer Spectroscopy, Solid State NMR and F EI TOF MALDI MS

Polymers in general and metal-containing polymers in particular are often sparingly soluble or insoluble, in contrast to small molecules. Thus, special significance is attached to characterization techniques that can be applied to the materials as solids. Here, three techniques are discussed that give structural information gained from the solid material. Mossbauer spectroscopy is a powerful technique that may give information on the structure about the metal-containing moiety for about 44 different nuclei. Complex [Fe(II)Gd(III){pyCO(OEt)pyCOH(OEt)py}(3)](ClO(4))(2) (1) crystallizes in the Cc space group and contains one hexacoordinate ferrous ion and one enneacoordinate Gd(III) ion. Complex [Fe(2)(II)Gd(III){pyCO(OEt)py}(4)(NO(3))(H(2)O)][Gd(NO(3))(5)](0.5)(ClO(4)) (2) crystallizes in the C2/c space group and contains two hexacoordinate ferrous ions and one octacoordinate Gd(III) ion. Formation, phase composition, and transformations of Langmuir-Blodgett multi- and monolayers containing Fe

Mono- and multilayers of ferric stearate were formed by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Thermodesorption of the hydrocarbon chains results in well defined thin oxidic films. Their reduction to Fe2+ and α-Fe was followed by conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy. Resonance lines can be observed even if the Fe coverage is less than one monolayer.

The Mössbauer effect and collective motions in glass-forming liquids and polymeric networks

Glass-forming liquids, synthetic polymers and biopolymers share essential properties. Dynamic processes in these complex systems are characterized by cooperative motions with wide distributions of time scales, which manifest themselves in broad quasielastic lines in the Mossbauer spectrum. In this article, the application of the Mossbauer effect to the study of structural dynamics in complex systems is discussed.

Synthesis and magnetic properties of an iron 1,2-bisthienyl perfluorocyclopentene photochromic coordination compound

Abstract The coordination compound Fe(BM-4-PTP) 2 (NCS) 2 ⋅2MeOH ( 1 ) including the photoisomerizable ligand BM-4-PTP (1,2-bis(2′-methyl-5′-(pyrid-4″-yl)thien-3′-yl)perfluorocyclopentene) was obtained as an orange powder. The powder turns blue upon photocyclization of the 1,2-bisthienyl photochromic ligand induced by UV light irradiation at room temperature. Photocycloreversion is obtained by visible light irradiation of the material in the solid state. [Fe(NH(2)trz)(3)]SnF(6)n H(2)O (NH(2)trz=4-amino-1,2,4-triazole; n=1 (1), n=0.5 (2)) are new 1D spin-crossover coordination polymers. Compound 2 exhibits an incomplete spin transition centred at around 210 K with a thermal hysteresis loop approximately 16 K wide. The spin transition of 2 was detected by the Mossbauer resonance of the (119)Sn atom in the SnF(6) (2-) anion primarily on the basis of the evolution of its local distortion. Rapid-cooling (57)Fe Mossbauer and superconducting quantum interference device experiments allow dramatic widening of the hysteresis width of 2 from 16 K up to 82 K and also shift the spin-transition curve into the room temperature region. Two new polymeric triorganotin(IV) complexes R3Sn{O2CC6H4[N=C(H)}{C(CH3)CH(CH3)-3-OH]-p} n ([Me3Sn(LH)] n : 1) and ([Ph3Sn(LH)] n : 2) containing a 4-[(2Z)-(3-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-butenylidene)amino]benzoate (LH) framework were prepared. Both compounds have been characterized by 1H, 13C, 119Sn NMR, IR and 119Sn Mossbauer spectroscopic techniques in combination with elemental analyses.
