Random allogeneic blood transfusion in pigs: characterisation of a novel experimental model.

2019

BackgroundOrgan cross-talk describes interactions between a primary affected organ and a secondarily injured remote organ, particularly in lung-brain interactions. A common theory is the systemic distribution of inflammatory mediators that are released by the affected organ and transferred through the bloodstream. The present study characterises the baseline immunogenic effects of a novel experimental model of random allogeneic blood transfusion in pigs designed to analyse the role of the bloodstream in organ cross-talk.MethodsAfter approval of the State and Institutional Animal Care Committee, 20 anesthetized pig were randomized in a donor and an acceptor (eachn = 8): the acceptor animals …

First glimpse of the soft x-ray induced excited spin-state trapping effect dynamics on spin cross-over molecules.

2013

The dynamics of the soft x-ray induced excited spin state trapping (SOXIESST) effect of Fe(phen)(2)(NCS)(2) (Fe-phen) powder have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) using the total electron yield method, in a wide temperature range. The low-spin (LS) state is excited into the metastable high-spin (HS) state at a rate that depends on the intensity of the x-ray illumination it receives, and both the temperature and the intensity of the x-ray illumination will affect the maximum HS proportion that is reached. We find that the SOXIESST HS spin state transforms back to the LS state at a rate that is similar to that found for the light induced excited spin state trapping (LI…

Characterizing smart tracking-based self-service technologies (STB SSTs) and their acceptance antecedents : a systematic literature review

2022

This paper introduces smart tracking-based self-service technologies (STB SSTs) as a new category of self-service. STB SSTs allow brand customers to voluntarily perform feedback-seeking that targets their brand-related consumption occurring in a connected environment, provided they consent to share private data with their brand. Despite an increasing deployment, this category of self-service is not well defined in the literature. In addition, we have little understanding of consumer motivations to use these technologies. The present work attempts to fill these gaps by performing an interpretive literature review. Our literaturereview highlights the necessity to distinguish between core and …

Determination of phosphorus by instrumental neutron activation and bremsstrahlung measurement in bone samples

1997

A non destructive method based on the31P(n,γ)32P reaction for the assay of phosphorus in bone samples is described. This method involves a thermal neutron irradiation of 2 minutes in a reactor followed by the measurement of the bremsstrahlung produced by the β− of32P in a Ge-detector surrounded by an anti-Compton shield. Accuracy and precision were tested by analysing the certified NIST 1486 Bone Meal reference material and tri-calcium phosphate (Ca3(PO4)2) samples. The value obtained for the reference material was in good agreement with the certified value and with relative standard deviation of 4.1% the precision was acceptable. The value obtained for Ca3(PO4)2 shows a deviation of −6% fr…

Increased cross-education of muscle strength and reduced corticospinal inhibition following eccentric strength training.

2015

Aim: Strength training of one limb results in a substantial increase in the strength of the untrained limb, however, it remains unknown what the corticospinal responses are following either eccentric or concentric strength training and how this relates to the cross-education of strength. The aim of this study was to determine if eccentric or concentric unilateral strength training differentially modulates corticospinal excitability, inhibition and the cross-transfer of strength. Methods: Changes in contralateral (left limb) concentric strength, eccentric strength, motor-evoked potentials, short-interval intracortical inhibition and silent period durations were analyzed in groups of young ad…

Haptoglobin interacts with apolipoprotein E and beta-amyloid and influences their crosstalk.

2014

Beta-amyloid accumulation in brain is a driving force for Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) represents a critical player in beta-amyloid homeostasis, but its role in disease progression is controversial. We previously reported that the acute-phase protein haptoglobin binds ApoE and impairs its function in cholesterol homeostasis. The major aims of this study were to characterize the binding of haptoglobin to beta-amyloid, and to evaluate whether haptoglobin affects ApoE binding to beta-amyloid. Haptoglobin is here reported to form a complex with beta-amyloid as shown by immunoblotting experiments with purified proteins, or by its immunoprecipitation in brain tissues …
