Extracting subseasonal scenarios: an alternative method to analyze seasonal predictability of regional-scale tropical rainfall.
2013
Abstract Current seasonal prediction of rainfall typically focuses on 3-month rainfall totals at regional scale. This temporal summation reduces the noise related to smaller-scale weather variability but also implicitly emphasizes the peak of the climatological seasonal cycle of rainfall. This approach may hide potentially predictable signals when rainfall is lower: for example, near the onset or cessation of the rainy season. The authors illustrate such a case for the East African long rains (March–May) on a network of 36 stations in Kenya and north Tanzania from 1961 to 2001. Spatial coherence and potential predictability of seasonal rainfall anomalies associated with tropical sea surface…

The subject matter of this paper refers to the next stage of the research work connected with the improvement of the acoustic emission method (AE) used for the evaluation of partial discharges (PDs) generated in paper-oil insulation systems of high-voltage power appliances. The subject matter discussed here refers to one of the aspects of the analysis of the signals registered - a correct and effective recognition of the AE signals generated by basic PD forms. The paper presents research results of the application of the unidirectional artificial neuron networks (ANN) used for the recognition of basic PD forms that can occur in paper-oil insulation impaired by aging processes.
Estetyka "re-" w Weselu na podstawie "Wesela" z Teatru im. Jana Kochanowskiego w Opolu
2016
The subject of the article is, modern in last decades, a creative way of parasitising on someone else‘s texts – a reinterpretation of texts which were written some time ago. As an example of such a modern drama strategy, called a literary recycling, I chose ―The Wedding‖ on the basis of Wyspianski‘s ―The Wedding‖ presented in Jan Kochanowski Theatre in Opole. The staging is a reinterpretation of a well-known drama of Jan Wyspianski which leads us to many reflections. How far can a director walk away from an original text, traditions, conventions, a spectator‘s habits? What kind of compromises can be discussed to, on the one hand, keep the part of original content, and on the other hand, pre…
Age, pathogen exposure, but not maternal care shape offspring immunity in an insect with facultative family life
2017
International audience; Background: To optimize their resistance against pathogen infection, individuals are expected to find the right balance between investing into the immune system and other life history traits. In vertebrates, several factors were shown to critically affect the direction of this balance, such as the developmental stage of an individual, its current risk of infection and/or its access to external help such as parental care. However, the independent and/or interactive effects of these factors on immunity remain poorly studied in insects. Results: Here, we manipulated maternal presence and pathogen exposure in families of the European earwig Forficula auricularia to measur…
Modification of hosts' behavior by a parasite: field evidence for adaptive manipulation.
2007
9 pages; International audience; Parasites relying on trophic transmission to complete their life cycles often induce modifications of their host's behavior in ways that may increase their susceptibility to predation by final hosts. These modifications have often been interpreted as parasite adaptations, but very few studies have demonstrated that host manipulation has fitness benefits for the parasite. The aim of the present study was to address the adaptive significance of parasite manipulation by coupling observations of behavioral manipulation to estimates of trophic transmission to the definitive host in the natural environment. We show that the acanthocephalan parasite Pomphorhynchus …
Interconnecteurs métalliques de piles à combustible de type SOFC - Résistance à la corrosion et conductivité électrique à haute température
2009
The need of interconnect to connect individual cells into electrical series in a SOFC stack appears as one of the most important point in fuel cell technology. The main important criteria requires for interconnect is an excellent oxidation resistance in air and in H2/H2O. The goal of this study is to determine the influence on corrosion behaviour of a reactive element oxide coating (La2O3, Y2O3) realized by MOCVD on different metallic alloys like Crofer22APU, Haynes230 and Fe30Cr. The realisation of long ageing (7 700 and 15 400 hours) proved to be insightful. The corrosion kinetic experiments, the oxide scale characterisation and ASR measurements established that the presence of perovskite…
Développement et évaluation d'une méthode fondée sur la PCR temps réel pour la caractérisation des bioaérosols : application au groupe des actinomycè…
2013
Actinomycetes are ubiquitous bacteria and some can be potentially pathogen for Humans in the air of some working areas. It’s notably the case in composting plants where bacteria concentrations can reach high values. Workers exposure to these inhalable bioaerosols can be source of various diseases (hypersensitivity pneumonitis notably). Although this problem is admitted, bibliography reveals a lack of knowledge about risk assessment: currently, none global method for bioaerosols sampling and analysis is standardized. So much that neither dose-effects relationship for most of these bacteria, nor Threshold Limit Value exists. Traditional methods, that are used, have some drawbacks (concentrati…
Economic Returns to Education in France: OLS and Instrumental Variable Estimations
2013
En ligne sur : http://121.52.153.179/JOURNAL/LJE%20VOL%2018-2/Bhatti,%20Bourdon%20and%20Aslam.pdf; International audience; This article estimates the economic returns to schooling as well as analyzing other explanatory factors for the French labor market. It addresses the issue of endogeneity bias and proposes two new instruments for use in the instrumental variable two-stage least squares technique. Our results show that the proposed instruments are relevant and adequate, based on evidence from the available literature. After using the proposed instruments, we find that the OLS coefficients for schooling are biased downwards. Finally, we choose between the two proposed instruments.
Working outside academia? : perceptions of early-career, fixed-term researchers on changing careers
2019
This article examines the perceptions of early-career, fixed-term researchers in Finnish universities towards changing careers. It maps out the reasons this group has considered the change and where they see themselves in five years. As a theoretical framework, a synthesisation of variables related to career change, created by Ryan, Healy, and Sullivan [2012. “Oh, Won’t You Stay? Predictors of Faculty Intent to Leave a Public University.” Higher Education 63: 421–437.], was used. The results show that the most common reasons for early-career researchers to change careers are job-security related stress, job-related dissatisfaction, and salary. Over half of the respondents would like to work…
