No-flow temperature and solidification in injection molding simulation

2011

The no‐flow temperature (NFT) is a parameter representing the rheological solidification temperature of a polymer. A polymer, during injection molding filling stage, can stop its flow because of its high viscosity, although it is not yet fully solidified by means of glass transition or crystallization. The NFT is used in most of injection molding simulation packages: with this simple parameter it is possible to reduce the errors deriving from viscosity extrapolation at relatively low temperatures. The viscosity measurements for polymers are usually carried out at high temperatures, and the viscosity models can fail in prediction at temperatures close to the glass transition or crystallizati…

Theory and Simulation of Multiphase Polymer Systems

2010

The theory of multiphase polymer systems has a venerable tradition. The 'classical' theory of polymer demixing, the Flory-Huggins theory, was developed already in the forties of the last century. It is still the starting point for most current approaches -- be they improved theories for polymer (im)miscibility that take into account the microscopic structure of blends more accurately, or sophisticated field theories that allow to study inhomogeneous multicomponent systems of polymers with arbitrary architectures in arbitrary geometries. In contrast, simulations of multiphase polymer systems are relatively young. They are still limited by the fact that one must simulate a large number of lar…

Global Cognitive Functioning versus Controlled Functioning throughout the Stages of Development

2020

According to the All or None Hypothesis (Diamond, 2009), the cognitive system can operate in a global manner that is not very discriminate or in a more discriminate mode that demands greater precision, control, and cognitive effort. There are five corollaries to this hypothesis that describe, in an operative way, the conditions under which the controlled mode of functioning in the cognitive domain can be activated and thus tested. Given the impact this theory has generated and the absence of studies analyzing the corollaries in a collective and systematic way at different stages of development, this study was proposed, first of all, to test three of these corollaries in children, adolescent…

Immunoscore in Mismatch Repair-Proficient and -Deficient Colon Cancer

2017

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate immune response and its prognostic significance in colon carcinomas using the previously described Immunoscore (IS). A population-based series of 779 colorectal cancers, operated on between 2000 and 2010, were classified according to tumour, node, metastasis (TNM) status, mismatch repair (MMR), and BRAF mutation status. Rectal cancer cases (n = 203) were excluded as a high proportion of these patients received preoperative neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Tissue microarray (TMA) samples collected from the tumour centre and invasive front were immunostained for CD3 and CD8. Lymphocytes were then digitally calculated to categorize IS from grade …

LightSleepNet: A Lightweight Deep Model for Rapid Sleep Stage Classification with Spectrograms.

2021

Deep learning has achieved unprecedented success in sleep stage classification tasks, which starts to pave the way for potential real-world applications. However, due to its enormous size, deployment of deep neural networks is hindered by high cost at various aspects, such as computation power, storage, network bandwidth, power consumption, and hardware complexity. For further practical applications (e.g., wearable sleep monitoring devices), there is a need for simple and compact models. In this paper, we propose a lightweight model, namely LightSleepNet, for rapid sleep stage classification based on spectrograms. Our model is assembled by a much fewer number of model parameters compared to…

Three Stages of Consumers’ Multi-Stage Dichotomic Switching Process Pre-Switch, switch, and post-switch

2021

This research examines why and how consumers switch their mobile phones. We propose a framework that is grounded on decision-making and motivational theories and draws on the findings from a multinational qualitative survey on consumers’ mobile phone switching process. We show that consumers’ pre-switching decisions are affected by push and pull factors, their mobile phone selections are based on utilitarian or hedonic values, and their justifications for switching are based on cognition or affect. Furthermore, we identify two archetypical routes (i.e., cognitive and affective routes) and three conjoint routes that explain the dichotomic switching processes in pre-switch, switch, and post-s…

A BRIEF ANALYSIS ON DEVELOPMENT AND COMPETITIVENESS – CONSIDERING THE WORLD’S TOP TRANSNATIONAL CORPORATIONS

2012

Development represents a strategic goal for every country of the world. But it also is a “complicated issue”, given the multitude of (micro and macro economic) approaches that academics and strategists have proposed for development. By this paper we consider competitiveness as measure and indicator of development – based on World Economic Forum researches and findings. This kind of approach allows us to make some (time - and space - based) comparisons – at country level and to identify some key figures – at industry level – of the world’s top transnational corporations (ranked by UNCTAD) that can be valorised by countries (and TNCs as well) on their journey through economic development and …

Oral mucosa symptoms, signs and lesions, in end stage renal disease and non-end stage renal disease diabetic patients

2006

Aim: To assess oral signs, symptoms and oral lesions (OL) type and prevalence, in diabetic patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD DM), and compare them with analogous findings in a non-ESRD DM group; analyze the possible association between oral manifestations, as well as with relevant laboratory findings. Research design. Two adult groups were studied: Group A: ESRD DM on dialysis, and group B: non-ESRD DM (serum creatinine <2.0 mg/dl). Known DM evolution time, dialysis treatment type and duration, and laboratory results were recorded. An oral exam was performed, searching for signs, symptoms and ESRD-associated OL. Associations were analyzed using Chi square, Fisher?s exact test, and…
