Protective Role of Conization Before Radical Hysterectomy in Early-Stage Cervical Cancer: A Propensity-Score Matching Study.

2021

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the prognostic role and the perioperative outcomes of conization performed before radical hysterectomy in early-stage cervical carcinoma. Methods: This multicenter, retrospective observational cohort study included patients with FIGO 2009 stage IB1 cervical carcinoma treated with radical hysterectomy between June 2004 and June 2019. Patients were divided into two groups according to conization before radical surgery. One-to-one case–control matching was used to adjust the baseline characteristics. Results: A total of 332 patients were included after propensity matching (166, 50% in each group). Twenty-four of 166 (14.4%) and 142 of 166 (85.6%…

Oropharyngeal and otorhinological changes in end stage renal patients undergoing hemodialysis

2021

Background The study aimed to assess oropharyngeal and otorhinolaryngological changes in end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing hemodialysis and correlate the findings to renal functions. Material and methods This case-control study compared oral and otorhinolaryngological findings in 85 patients with (ESRD) on maintenance hemodialysis to age and sex matched 85 healthy controls. Frequencies of findings were calculated and compared and correlation between biochemical and the oral health parameters in case group was determined using T-test, chi-square and Pearson correlation test (significance were set at P Results The frequency of oral signs and mucosal symptoms were significantl…

Impact of the anatomical location, alcoholism and smoking on the prevalence of advanced oral cancer in Brazil

2018

Background To evaluate the prevalence of oral cancer in Brazil according to the clinical stage, anatomical location, alcoholism and smoking. Material and Methods Data referring to 31,217 cases of oral cancer, from 2000 to 2010, were obtained from the Integrator Module of the Hospital Registry of Cancer. Inconsistent data (“non-classified” cases) was eliminated and 21,160 cases were analyzed. The frequency distribution according to clinical stage, anatomical location, alcoholism and smoking was analyzed descriptively and through a binary logistic regression model (α<0.05). The clinical stage (dependent variable) was dichotomized in early stage (I and II) or advanced stage (III and IV). The y…

Splenic Marginal Zone Lymphoma: French Registries Population-Based Treatment and Survival Analyses (2002-2014)

2020

Background. Splenic Marginal Zone Lymphoma (SMZL) is a rare indolent B-cell lymphoma characterized by a massive splenomegaly and a moderate lymphocytosis. There is no standard of care for SMZL so far. The treatment is indicated if constitutional symptoms, massive splenomegaly and/or cytopenia, after a watch and wait period that is highly variable. Rituximab with or without chemotherapy, chemotherapy, and splenectomy are valid treatment approaches. Our objectives were to describe the characteristics of the patients with SMZL retrospectively collected from a French population database, to analyze the treatments received in first line (Tt1) and in second line (Tt2) in term of efficacy, and to …

AUTOLOGOUS HEMATOPOIETIC STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION (AUTOHSCT) IN CLL: FIRST RESULTS OF AN EBMT RANDOMIZED TRIAL COMPARING AUTOTRANSPLANT VERSUS WAIT …

2010

Abstract Abstract 877 This phase-III randomized EBMT-intergroup trial studied the impact of a consolidating autoHSCT vs no consolidation for patients with CLL in Binet stage A progressive, B or C , in CR, nodular PR or VGPR after first or second line therapy. The primary objective was to show that autoHSCT increased the 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) by 30%. Although it had been calculated that 270 patients were to be randomized, the study was terminated by the steering committee in July 2007 due to poor accrual. Here we present a first analysis based on 69% of expected follow-up forms. Results: Between November 2001 and July 2007, 223 patients were enrolled (SFGM-TC/FCLLG n=98, MRC…

An unmet medical need:advances in endoscopic imaging of colorectal neoplasia

2011

Gastrointestinal cancer is a major public health problem worldwide. Detection of early neoplastic lesions in gastrointestinal tract is essential for cure, because prognosis and survival are related to the size and stage of malignant lesions. Endoscopic screening and treatment of polyps could prevent approximately 80% of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, white-light endoscopy is an imperfect technology since miss rates of up to 25% have been reported and polyps without malignant potential were treated without benefit but with additional costs and risks to the patient. There are several known "human" predictors of an inadequate colonoscopy. These include patient characteristics such as poor b…

Update to the ASFA guidelines on the use of therapeutic apheresis in ANCA‐associated vasculitis

2020

Since 1986, the American Society for Apheresis (ASFA) has published practice guidelines on the use of therapeutic apheresis in the Journal of Clinical Apheresis (JCA) Special Issue. Since 2007, updated guidelines have been published every 3 years to reflect current evidence based apheresis practice with the most recent edition (8th) published in 2019. With each edition, the guidelines are reviewed and updated based on any newly published literature since the last review. The PEXIVAS study, an international, randomized controlled trial comparing therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) vs no TPE and standard vs reduced dose steroid regimen on the primary composite outcome of end stage renal disease…

Tackling the Problem of Data Imbalancing for Melanoma Classification

2016

Comunicació de congrés presentada a: 3rd International Conference on Bioimaging, BIOIMAGING 2016 - Part of 9th International Joint Conference on Biomedical Engineering Systems and Technologies, BIOSTEC 2016, Roma, Italy Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer, yet melanoma is the most treatable kind of cancer when diagnosed at an early stage. In this regard, Computer-Aided Diagnosis systems based on machine learning have been developed to discern melanoma lesions from benign and dysplastic nevi in dermoscopic images. Similar to a large range of real world applications encountered in machine learning, melanoma classification faces the challenge of imbalanced data, where …

204 Role of minimally invasive surgery versus open approach on the clinical and surgical outcome in patients with early stage uterine carcinosarcomas…

2020

Objectives The aim of this retrospective study was to compare surgical and survival outcome in only patients with early stage uterine carcinosarcomas (UCSs) managed by laparotomic surgery (LPT) versus minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Methods Data were retrospectively collected in 4 Italian different institutions. Inclusion criteria were: UCS diagnosis confirmed by the definitive histological examination, and stage I or II according to the FIGO staging system. Results Between August 2000 and March 2019, the data relative to 150 patients bearing UCSs were collected: of these, 82 were defined as early stage disease (stage I-II) based on the histological report at the primary surgery, and thus…

Effects of preoperative group-based aquatic training on health related quality of life in persons with late stage knee osteoarthritis

2015

drainage is better than resistance training alone as far as improvement in lymphedema is concerned. Implications: Lymphedema has a substantial effect on the upper limb functioning, independence as well as quality of life post mastectomy. Manual lymphatic drainage can help these patients to achieve functional independence and thereby increase their life quality in a simple, cost effective and efficient way.
