ESMO Consensus Guidelines for management of patients with colon and rectal cancer. A personalized approach to clinical decision making

2012

Contains fulltext : 111010pub.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most common tumour type in both sexes combined in Western countries. Although screening programmes including the implementation of faecal occult blood test and colonoscopy might be able to reduce mortality by removing precursor lesions and by making diagnosis at an earlier stage, the burden of disease and mortality is still high. Improvement of diagnostic and treatment options increased staging accuracy, functional outcome for early stages as well as survival. Although high quality surgery is still the mainstay of curative treatment, the management of CRC must be a multi-modal approach pe…

In situ behavior of wild long-snouted seahorse Hippocampus guttulatus Cuvier, 1829

2021

The study of behavior is one of the fundamental aspects of conservation biology. While for animals such as mammals there are well-defined protocols that have been applied for a long time, for marine animals, and fish in particular, studies are available for a limited number of species. The behavior of seahorses, for example, is poorly studied and in this work, we made a first attempt of using video recordings to analyze behavior of these endangered species in Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Southern Italy). The study presents preliminary data on behavioral activities and their comparisons among different life stages of Hippocampus guttulatus, namely females, males, and juveniles. Juveniles and fema…

Self and Identity Development during Adolescence across Cultures

2015

The purpose is to show the dynamic of change and stability in the development of identity and self during adolescence. We present some basic differences between the development of self-perceptions and the development of identity according to Erikson's psychosocial formulation. The change and stability dynamics of identity development is subjected to critique from the perspective of the status paradigm as well as more recent theoretical models. The key role of the cultural context's inevitable influence on the development of identity and self-perceptions through the production of relevant cultural variations is also analyzed.

Geographical separation and physiology drive differentiation of microbial communities of two discrete populations of the bat Leptonycteris yerbabuenae

2020

In this paper, we explore how two discrete and geographically separated populations of the lesser long‐nosed bat (Leptonycteris yerbabuenae)—one in central and the other in the Pacific region of Mexico—differ in their fecal microbiota composition. Considering the microbiota–host as a unity, in which extrinsic (as food availability and geography) or intrinsic factors (as physiology) play an important role in the microbiota composition, we would expect differentiation in the microbiota of two geographically separated populations. The Amplicon Sequences Variants (ASVs) of the V4 region of the 16s rRNA gene from 68 individuals were analyzed using alpha and beta diversity metrics. We obtained a …

Real-World Data Analysis of Pregnancy-Associated Breast Cancer at a Tertiary-Level Hospital in Romania

2020

Background and objectives: Breast cancer is among the most common cancer types encountered during pregnancy. Here, we aimed to describe the characteristics, management, and outcomes of women with pregnancy-associated breast cancer at a tertiary-level hospital in Romania. Material and Methods: We retrospectively and prospectively collected demographic, oncological, and obstetrical data for women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, and who elected to continue their pregnancy, between June 2012 and June 2020. Complete data were obtained regarding family and personal medical history and risks factors, cancer diagnosis and staging, clinical and pathological features (including histology and …

Ligand-based discovery of novel trypanosomicidal drug-like compounds: In silico identification and experimental support

2010

Abstract Two-dimensional bond-based linear indices and linear discriminant analysis are used in this report to perform a quantitative structure–activity relationship study to identify new trypanosomicidal compounds. A database with 143 anti-trypanosomal and 297 compounds having other clinical uses, are utilized to develop the theoretical models. The best discriminant models computed using bond-based linear indices provides accuracies greater than 90 for both training and test sets. Our models identify as anti-trypanosomals five out of nine compounds of a set of already-synthesized substances. The in vitro anti-trypanosomal activity of this set against epimastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi…

Eulerian-Eulerian modelling and computational fluid dynamics simulation of wire mesh demisters in MSF plants

2014

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to focus on simulation of wire mesh demisters in multistage flash desalination (MSF) plants. The simulation is made by the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. Design/methodology/approach – A steady state and two-dimensional (2D) model was developed to simulate the demister. The model employs an Eulerian-Eulerian approach to simulate the flow of water vapor and brine droplets in the demister. The computational domain included three zones, which are the vapor space above and below the demister and the demister. The demister zone was modeled as a tube bank arrange or as a porous media. Findings – Sensitivity analysis of the model showed t…

Eulerian–Lagrangian modeling and computational fluid dynamics simulation of wire mesh demisters in MSF plants

2016

Abstract This study focuses on computational fluid dynamics model (CFD) for simulation of demisters in multistage flash desalination (MSF). The Eulerian–Lagrangian model (steady-state and two-dimensional) was developed to simulate the demister. The model was used to simulate the flow of water vapor and brine droplets in the demister. The computational domain includes the following three zones: the vapor space above the demister, the vapor space below the demister, and the demister. The demister zone was modeled as tube banks. A sensitivity analysis of the model revealed that vapor velocity is the main parameter that affects demister performance. Additionally, the analysis indicated that vap…
