High-brilliance double-stage soft x-ray laser pumped by multiple pulses applied in grazing incidence
2014
A new compact scheme for a double-stage seeded x-ray laser is demonstrated. This laser is offering greatly improved beam quality and brilliance making it a useful tool for applications.
The Understanding of Human Rights and Rule of Law from the Perspective of Kohlberg’s Theory
2015
Human rights, democracy and the rule of law are considered to be the foundations of the normative order of modern societies (Habermas, 1996). Even though the universal validity of human rights is often criticized, they represent an ethical minimum consensus of the global society as conventions on human rights have been ratified by more than 150 states.
Experimental Modeling of Submerged Pivot Weir
2020
An inclined rectangular overflow structure, also called a pivot weir, consists of a rectangular plate, angled downstream from the vertical, that can be used as an upstream water level control device. A pivot weir is submerged when the upstream water level is influenced by the downstream flow depth. In this paper, to investigate factors influencing submerged flow conditions, an extensive experimental program including 251 experimental trials was carried out using weir inclination angles of 39.6°, 53°, 85°, and 90° and weir heights ranging from 0.263 to 0.312 m. A formula to distinguish between free and submerged flow conditions was developed using the Π theorem of dimensional analysis and th…
Using unsteady-state water level data to estimate channel roughness and discharge hydrograph
2009
A novel methodology for simultaneous discharge and channel roughness estimation is developed and applied to data sets available at three experimental sites. The methodology is based on the synchronous measurement of water level data in two river sections far some kilometers from each other, as well as on the use of a diffusive flow routing solver and does not require any direct velocity measurement. The methodology is first analyzed for the simplest case of a channel with a large slope, where the kinematic assumption holds. A sensitivity and a model error analysis are carried out in this hypothesis in order to show the stability of the results with respect to the error in the input paramete…
Discharge estimation in open channels by means of water level hydrograph analysis
2010
A new methodology, based on the synchronous measurement of stage hydrographs in two river sections located some kilometers from each other, was developed to estimate the discharge hydrograph in the upstream section. The methodology is based on the one-parameter calibration of a numerical flow routing algorithm, solving the Saint-Venant equations in diffusive or complete form. The methodology was validated using results of laboratory experiments carried out at the Polytechnic of Bari University. A known discharge hydrograph was generated in the upstream tank of a rectangular flume, where two water level sensors were located. Two different bed materials have been used, to account for differen…
Assessing Stage-Discharge Relationships for Circular Overflow Structure
2018
Circular overflow structures are used in irrigation and drainage networks as water measuring structures. Different approaches can be found in the literature to formulate the stage-discharge relationship of the circular weir. They are mainly categorized in three groups: (1)methods trying to simplify the complex elliptic integrals coming from the theoretical discharge equation; (2)methods that use the orifice formula and a discharge coefficient specific for the circular weir; and (3)approaches using dimensional analysis and Buckingham's Theorem. In this study, a nondimensional stage-discharge formula was obtained using Buckingham's Theorem to define the flow over the sharp-crested circular we…
Discussion of “Unsteady Stage-Discharge Relationships for Sharp-Crested Weirs” by Firouz Ghasemzadeh, Salah Kouchakzadeh, and Gilles Belaud
2021
I would like to thank the authors for writing this interesting article dealing with unsteady stage-discharge relationships for sharp-crested weirs. The operation of triangular and rectangular sharp-crested weirs in unsteady flow conditions was experimentally investigated. Results indicated the presence of looped rating curves, with transposition of the rising and falling limbs compared to that commonly observed in stream gauge ratings. The authors found that the deviation between steady and unsteady flow rates in the looped rating curves depends on the weir type and the hydrograph gradient (i.e., the temporal depth variation), especially when the latter changes rapidly. Finally, they propos…
New stage-discharge relationships for radial gates
2013
Calibration of gates under free and submerged flow regimes is a classical hydraulic problem. In this paper dimensional analysis was applied to investigate both free and submerged flow conditions through a radial gate. The original Ferro’s method for submerged flow regime was modified by introducing the maximum allowable tail water depth permitting free flow. Based on Buckingham theorem and applying the Incomplete Self Similarity (ISS) concept different forms of the dimensional equations were proposed. According to the current available experimental data the most accurate dimensionless formula was proposed. The proposed dimensional equation not only is more accurate than the original Ferro’s…
