Ecosocial innovations enabling social work to promote new forms of sustainable economy

2020

Social work research and practice that address environmental sustainability have already become prominent. However, a change in unsustainable economic structures is also urgently needed. This study explored emerging opportunities in theory and practice for a sustainable economy that are relevant to the aims of social work. As practical examples, our study concerns ‘ecosocial innovations’, i.e., social innovations that combine ecological and social goals. We analysed how these grassroots innovations in the field of social work reflect crucial shared conceptions of alternative economies. The qualitative data set comprised of 50 ecosocial innovations and six case studies in five European count…

Co-creation of a sustainable image on social media : the case of five food brands

2017

The food industry causes large environmental impacts globally. Different actors such as governments, brands and consumers however, are actively working on creating a sustainable society. In this study I investigate how brands and consumers co-create a sustainable image and which sustainable images they create. A multiple case study is conducted under five Dutch sustainable food brands by using content analysis of sustainability hashtags in firm- and user-generated posts generated between April 2016 and March 2017 on the social media platform Instagram. The hashtags where counted and categorized in ten sustainability categories which were defined in a test-phase using open coding principles.…

Exploring the potential of an air transport eco-label

2018

Air transport plays a vital role in tourism because it makes long-haul destinations accessible and more frequent vacations possible. Despite its benefits, air travel extensively contributes to climate change. Behavioural change is seen as a key driver in mitigating the environmental impacts of air transport. One way to encourage behavioural change is the use of eco-labels. This paper presents the idea of introducing an air transport eco-label. It explores the idea’s potential and realization through the thematic analysis of 12 interviews with airline industry experts. The results indicated a need for an air transport eco-label. It could help build awareness among air travellers by providing…

Values and sustainable food consumption - promoting sustainably produced food products to Finnish consumers

2018

Food consumption and food choices are a vital part of humans’ lifestyles. In addition, it is widely acknowledged that food is one of the key consumption contexts for environmental and social impacts around the world. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the discussion on promoting sustainable food consumption. More specifically, this study provides insights into the promotion of sustainably produced food to consumers as well as into the value orientations linked with sustainable food consumption. This dissertation contributes to the existing literature on sustainable food consumption by showing that such consumption may be motivated by a plethora of value orientations – and their c…

Consumer selection of vegetarian food in restaurants

2015

Development, which began from agricultural and industrial revolutions has improved and eased human lives on this planet. But the massive growth of the human population has caused some serious environmental impacts on our planet. Millions of hectares of forests have been converted into arable land, fresh water resources are decreasing and oceans are getting overfished, while the demand for food continues to grow. Agriculture is the most important contributor to the climate change and global meat production sector causes more greenhouse gases to the atmosphere than transport. By reducing the consumption of meat and increasing the proportion of vegetables in human diets, the environmental impa…

Living standards and changing expectations : investigating domestic necessity and environmental sustainability in an affluent society

2017

This study explores how the problematic relations of rising living standards and environmental sustainability may be better understood by investigating domestic necessity and daily going-on. These key subjects are looked at from two angles and through two kinds of research material: statistics and quantitative survey material constituting of a nationally representative longitudinal dataset of Finnish people (n=2,417 in 1999, n=3,574 in 2004, n=1,202 in 2009), and in-depth interviews (n=14) of a particular socio-economic group, the well-to-do who have higher-than average income and higher education, and those in their prime working age (30–45 years-old). The survey material provides a tempor…

Reilu ruokamurros : Polkuja kestävään ja oikeudenmukaiseen ruokajärjestelmään

2022

Ruokajärjestelmämme kärsivät monista yhteen kietoutuneista kestävyysongelmista. Ongelmia ei korjata yksittäisillä teknologisilla ratkaisuilla, vaan muutoksia tarvitaan läpi koko ruokajärjestelmän. Muutosten laajuuden vuoksi on syytä puhua järjestelmän perustavanlaatuisesta muuttamisesta eli ruokamurroksesta.

Myth about altruistic organic consumption : values influence in perceiving organic meat consumer

2015

The aim of this study was twofold: Firstly, to find out whether organic meat consumers are perceived pro-social as defined by Griskevicius et al (2010) with attributes: Caring, Altruistic and Nice. The second theme was to find out what values of the perceiver influence that judgement; a glimpse to who finds the organic bacon consumer as pro-social. Quantitative methods were used in this study and an internet survey was conducted within students of University of Helsinki and Aalto University as well as a pre-requited Food West panellists. As anticipated, the results show that the organic bacon consumer is indeed perceived significantly more pro-social than the user of conventional bacon. The…
