We aimed to identify risk factors for anastomotic leakage, perioperative mortality and complications following left colectomy for colonic malignancies. After lobectomy and pneumonectomy in experimental evaluations stapled bronchial closures showed the lowest incidence of inflammatory reaction and the highest strength determined by leakage pressure compared with other suture material. A total of 233 lung resections-performed at Surgical University Clinic Koln-Lindenthal and the Clinic for General and Abdominal Surgery of the Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz--were reviewed. Aim This technical note describes the use of an endostapler for the definitive treatment of supralevator abscess upward from an intersphincteric origin. Method A two-stage treatment was performed. First an endoanal drainage was performed by inserting a mushroom catheter in the supralevator abscess cavity. In the second stage transanal unroofing of the fistula was performed with an endostapler. Results Since 2011, three patients have been treated in this way. After 2 years of follow up, none of the patients had recurrence of the abscess or been referred for anal incontinence. Objective To report operative modifications that render construction of the orthotopic Mainz pouch more simple, namely formation of the pouch using absorbable staples and utilization of the ileocecal valve as an antireflux mechanism. Patients and methods Between January 2001 and May 2002 out of 92 cystectomy cases, 21 patients (20 males and 1 female) underwent a simplified orthotopic Mainz pouch. The ureters were implanted via Wallace or Nesbit technique in the supravalvular portion of the ileocecal valve. In this report the authors outline the main historical aspects of haemorrhoids after a thorough review of the literature. The first texts concerning haemorrhoids are the ancient Egyptian papyruses. The twenty centuries of the history of haemorrhoids are marked by multiple pathogenetic theories, and of these the vascular and the sliding of the anal mucosa are still valid. From an analysis of the historical texts and the most recent publications, we deduce that the principles of therapy are substantially unchanged since the days of Hippocrates. A multiscale approach to automatic and unsupervised retinal vessel segmentation using Self-Organizing Maps

Self-Organizing Map, modified Fuzzy C-Means, STAPLE algorithms and majority voting strategy were adopted to identify a segmentation of the retinal vessels.
