A new approach for selection of Oenococcus oeni strains in order to produce malolactic starters.
2005
The lactic acid bacterium Oenococcus oeni, mainly responsible for malolactic fermentation (MLF), is used in new winery process as starter culture for direct inoculation. The difficulty to master MLF according to the wine led us to search a new approach to select effective O. oeni strains. Biochemical and molecular tests were performed in order to characterize three strains of O. oeni selected for malolactic starter elaboration. Malolactic and ATPase activities that appeared as a great interest in MLF were measured and the expression of a small heat shock protein Lo18 was evaluated by immunoblotting and real-time PCR. These results were correlated with the performances of strains in two red …
Virtuālie asistenti procesu automatizācijā
2019
Relationships between host species and morphometric patterns in Fasciola hepatica adults and eggs from the northern Bolivian Altiplano hyperendemic r…
2001
The highest prevalences and intensities of human fasciolosis by Fasciola hepatica are found in the northern Bolivian Altiplano, where sheep and cattle are the main reservoir host species and pigs and donkeys the secondary ones. Morphometric comparisons of many linear measurements, areas and ratios of F. hepatica adults (from sheep, cattle and pigs) and eggs (from sheep, cattle, pigs and donkeys) in natural liver fluke populations of the Bolivian Altiplano, as well as of F. hepatica adults and eggs experimentally obtained in Wistar rats infected with Altiplanic sheep, cattle and pig isolates, were made using computer image analysis and an allometric model. Although morphometric values of adu…

Dipole moments of 4′-aminoflavonols determined using electro-optical absorption measurements or molecular Stark-effect spectroscopy
2002
The electro-optical absorption measurements (EOAM) were used to measure the dipole moments of the normal form of 4 -(methoxy)-3hydroxyflavone (FOM), 4 -(dimethylamino)-3-hydroxyflavone (FME), and 4 -N-(15-azacrown-5)-3-hydroxyflavone (FCR). For these probes the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) takes place. For comparison, the dipole moments of 4 -(dimethylamino)-3methoxyflavone (FME3ME), for which ESIPT is lacking, were measured. In the case of FCR, FME, and FME3ME the equilibrated ground (µg) and excited Franck–Condon state (µ FC ) electrical dipole moments are parallel to each other and also parallel to the transition dipole moment. The electrical dipole moment…
Static magnetic field influence on rat brain function detected by heart rate monitoring.
2004
The aim of the present study was to identify the effects of a static magnetic field (SMF) on rat brain structures that control autonomic functions, specifically heart rate and heart rhythmicity. The experiments were carried out on 44 male Wistar rats under ketamine-xylazine anesthesia. SMF was induced using samarium-cobalt fused magnets (20 x 20 x 10 mm in size) placed bitemporally. Magnetic induction intensity was 100 mT on the surface of the head. Duration of magnetic field application was 15 min. An electrocardiogram was recorded from limb lead II, and both heart rate (average duration of cardiac cycles) and heart rhythmicity were analyzed before and after SMF application. SMF evoked cha…
Mildronate treatment improves functional recovery following middle cerebral artery occlusion in rats
2011
Mildronate (3-(2,2,2-trimethylhydrazinium) propionate) is an inhibitor of l-carnitine biosynthesis and an anti-ischemic drug. In the present study, we investigated the effects of mildronate in rats following focal cerebral ischemia. Male Wistar rats were subjected to transient occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCAO) for 90min, followed by the intraperitoneal administration of mildronate at doses of 100 and 200mg/kg 2h after reperfusion and then daily for an additional 14days. The beam-walking, rota-rod and cylinder tests were used to assess sensorimotor function, and vibrissae-evoked forelimb-placing and limb-placing tests examined responses to tactile and proprioceptive stimulation.…
A Neuroprotective Function for the Hematopoietic Protein Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony Stimulating Factor (GM-CSF)
2007
Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a hematopoietic cytokine responsible for the proliferation, differentiation, and maturation of cells of the myeloid lineage, which was cloned more than 20 years ago. Here we uncovered a novel function of GM-CSF in the central nervous system (CNS). We identified the GM-CSF α-receptor as an upregulated gene in a screen for ischemia-induced genes in the cortex. This receptor is broadly expressed on neurons throughout the brain together with its ligand and induced by ischemic insults. In primary cortical neurons and human neuroblastoma cells, GM-CSF counteracts programmed cell death and induces BCL-2 and BCL-Xl expression in a dose- a…
The selective estrogen receptor modulator, bazedoxifene, reduces ischemic brain damage in male rat
2014
While the estrogen treatment of stroke is under debate, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) arise as a promising alternative. We hypothesize that bazedoxifene (acetate, BZA), a third generation SERM approved for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, reduces ischemic brain damage in a rat model of transient focal cerebral ischemia. For comparative purposes, the neuroprotective effect of 17β-estradiol (E2) has also been assessed. Male Wistar rats underwent 60min middle cerebral artery occlusion (intraluminal thread technique), and grouped according to treatment: vehicle-, E2- and BZA-treated rats. Optimal plasma concentrations of E2 (45.6±7.8pg/ml) and BZA (20.7±2.1ng/ml) w…
