Isophorone on Au/MgO/Ag(001) : Physisorption with Electrostatic Site Selection

We report a computational study of isophorone C9H14O adsorption on a Ag(001)-supported ultrathin MgO film with Au adatoms and clusters employing density functional theory calculations. The calculations show that the keto form of isophorone is more stable than the enol tautomers both in gas phase and on the MgO/Ag(001) surface. The interaction between the keto isophorone and step and terrace sites of MgO/Ag(001) displays long interaction distances, relatively weakly exothermic adsorption energies, lack of charge transfer, and minor changes in the density of states, all of which indicate that the molecule merely physisorbs on the surface. The Role of the Anchor Atom in the Ligand of the Monolayer-Protected Au25(XR)18– Nanocluster

We present a density functional theory (DFT) investigation on the role of the anchor atom and ligand on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the anionic Au25(XR)18– nanocluster (X = S, Se, Te; R = H, CH3, and (CH2)2Ph). Substituting the anchor atom with other group 16 elements induces subtle changes in the Au–Au and Au–X bond lengths and polarization of the covalent bond. The changes in the electronic structure based on substituting both the anchor and R groups are presented through careful analysis of the density of states and theoretical determined optical spectra. Excited states in the proton-unbound nuclide 158Ta

Excited states in the neutron-deficient odd-odd proton-unbound nuclide 158Ta have been investigated in two separate experiments. In the first experiment, 166Ir nuclei were produced in the reactions of 380 MeV 78Kr ions with an isotopically enriched 92Mo target. The α-decay chain of the 9+ state in 166Ir was analyzed. Fine structure in the α decay of the 9+ state in 162Re established a 66 keV difference in excitation energy between the lowest-lying 9+ and 10+ states in 158Ta. Higher-lying states in 158Ta were populated in the reactions of 255 MeV 58Ni ions with an isotopically enriched 102Pd target. Competing Decay Modes of a High-spin Isomer in the Proton-unbound Nucleus 158Ta

2015

An isomeric state at high spin and excitation energy was recently observed in the proton-unbound nucleus 158Ta. This state was observed to decay by both α and γ decay modes. The large spin change required to decay via γ-ray emission incurs a lifetime long enough for α decay to compete. The α decay has an energy of 8644(11) keV, which is among the highest observed in the region, a partial half-life of 440(70) µs and changes the spin by 11~. In this paper, additional evidence supporting the assignment of this α decay to the high-spin isomer in 158Ta will be presented. peerReviewed

β decay of 133In : γ emission from neutron-unbound states in 133Sn

Excited states in 133Sn were investigated through the β decay of 133In at the ISOLDE facility. The ISOLDE Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) provided isomer-selective ionization for 133In, allowing us to study separately, and in detail, the β-decay branch of 133In Jπ = (9/2+) ground state and its Jπ = (1/2−) isomer. Thanks to the large spin difference of the two β-decaying states of 133In, it is possible to investigate separately the lower and higher spin states in the daughter, 133Sn, and thus to probe independently different single-particle and single-hole levels. Helical liquids have been experimentally detected in both nanowires and ultracold atomic chains as the result of strong spin-orbit interactions. In both cases the inner degrees of freedom can be considered as an additional space dimension, providing an interpretation of these systems as synthetic ladders, with artificial magnetic fluxes determined by the spin-orbit terms.
