Interaction between heterobinuclear molecules and nature of the ground spin state in oximato-bridged [CuIIMII]2 bis-binuclear complexes (M=Cu, Ni, Mn…
1999
[EN] Two new heterobimetallic complexes [Cu(pdmg)Ni(Me-3[12]N-3)(CH3CH2OH)](ClO4)(2)(2) and [Cu(pdmg) Mn(bipy)(2)]-ClO4)(2) . H2O (3) (H(2)pdmg = 3,9-dimethyl-4,8-diazaundeca-3,8-diene-2 10-dione dioxime; Me-3[12]N-3 = 2,4,4-trimethyl-1,5,9-triazacyclododeca-1-ene; bipy = 2,2'-bipyridyl) have been prepared and characterized. The structure of 2 has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. It consists of [Cu(pdmg)Ni(Me-3[12]N-3)(CH3CH2OH)](2+) cations and non-coordinated perchlorate anions. The [Cu(pdmg)(CH3CH2OH)] complex coordinates to the [Ni(Me-3[12]N-3)](2+) fragment to afford the binuclear unit doubly-bridged by oximato groups in cis arrangement. The coordination geo…

Collective defence portfolios of ant hosts shift with social parasite pressure
2014
Host defences become increasingly costly as parasites breach successive lines of defence. Because selection favours hosts that successfully resist parasitism at the lowest possible cost, escalating coevolutionary arms races are likely to drive host defence portfolios towards ever more expensive strategies. We investigated the interplay between host defence portfolios and social parasite pressure by comparing 17 populations of two Temnothorax ant species. When successful, collective aggression not only prevents parasitation but also spares host colonies the cost of searching for and moving to a new nest site. However, once parasites breach the host's nest defence, host colonies should resor…
An Appeal for Implementing Social Assistance and Welfare Programs for European Children Challenged by Parental Loss
2018
The authors of this commentary, many of whom are part of a working group on social pediatrics supported by some of the European national pediatric societies member of EPA-UNEPSA, conclude that more studies are needed to cross the boundaries between disciplines, for example, looking at the inter-relationship of family life and child health and how parental loss is affecting the micro and macro level of child healthcare service systems. Therefore, this article aims to alert pediatricians to the impact of parental loss on child health and wellbeing. It emphasizes the importance of implementing preventive and social support programs for achieving health promotion and health-protective effects.
Element-Specific Magnetic and Electronic Properties of Epitaxial Heusler Films
2015
X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) provides an experimental access to element-specific electronic properties of thin epitaxial films of Heusler alloys. The combination of bulk-sensitive transmission and surface-sensitive electron yield methods reveals quantitative information on bulk and interface properties. Extreme cases of magnetically dead and life layers at interfaces illustrate the high potential of XMCD. The dependence of XMCD on disorder, structure and composition is discussed as well as dynamic properties investigated by a combination of ferromagnetic resonance and XMCD. Examples are shown where spectroscopic information provided by XMCD is exploited to discuss subtle changes…
Purification of Lindblad dynamics, geometry of mixed states and geometric phases
2015
We propose a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in a Hilbert space enlarged with an ancilla such that the partial trace of its solution obeys to the Lindblad equation of an open quantum system. The dynamics involved by this nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation constitutes then a purification of the Lindbladian dynamics. This nonlinear equation is compared with other Schr\"odinger like equations appearing in the theory of open systems. We study the (non adiabatic) geometric phases involved by this purification and show that our theory unifies several definitions of geometric phases for open systems which have been previously proposed. We study the geometry involved by this purification and show th…
Study of dimuon production in photon-photon collisions and measurement of QED photon structure functions at LEP
2001
Muon pair production in the process e+e- -> e+e-mu+mu- is studied using the data taken at LEP1 (sqrt(s) \simeq m_Z) with the DELPHI detector during the years 1992-1995. The corresponding integrated luminosity is 138.5 pb^{-1}. The QED predictions have been tested over the whole Q^2 range accessible at LEP1 (from several GeV^2/c^4 to several hundred GeV^2/c^4) by comparing experimental distributions with distributions resulting from Monte Carlo simulations using various generators. Selected events are used to extract the leptonic photon structure function F_2^\gamma. Azimuthal correlations are used to obtain information on additional structure functions, F_A^\gamma and F_B^\gamma, which orig…
Determination of the pole position of the lightest hybrid meson candidate
2019
Mapping states with explicit gluonic degrees of freedom in the light sector is a challenge, and has led to controversies in the past. In particular, the experiments have reported two different hybrid candidates with spin-exotic signature, pi1(1400) and pi1(1600), which couple separately to eta pi and eta' pi. This picture is not compatible with recent Lattice QCD estimates for hybrid states, nor with most phenomenological models. We consider the recent partial wave analysis of the eta(') pi system by the COMPASS collaboration. We fit the extracted intensities and phases with a coupled-channel amplitude that enforces the unitarity and analyticity of the S-matrix. We provide a robust extracti…
Observation of Orbitally Excited Bs Mesons
2007
We report the first observation of two narrow resonances consistent with states of orbitally excited (L=1) B_s mesons using 1 fb^{-1} of ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We use two-body decays into K^- and B^+ mesons reconstructed as B^+ \to J/\psi K^+, J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^- or B^+ \to \bar{D}^0 \pi^+, \bar{D}^0 \to K^+ \pi^-. We deduce the masses of the two states to be m(B_{s1}) = 5829.4 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2 and m(B_{s2}^*) = 5839.7 +- 0.7 MeV/c^2.
