Detailed studies of $^{100}$Mo two-neutrino double beta decay in NEMO-3
2019
The full data set of the NEMO-3 experiment has been used to measure the half-life of the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru, $T_{1/2} = \left[ 6.81 \pm 0.01\,\left(\mbox{stat}\right) ^{+0.38}_{-0.40}\,\left(\mbox{syst}\right) \right] \times10^{18}$ y. The two-electron energy sum, single electron energy spectra and distribution of the angle between the electrons are presented with an unprecedented statistics of $5\times10^5$ events and a signal-to-background ratio of ~80. Clear evidence for the Single State Dominance model is found for this nuclear transition. Limits on Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay modes with spectral indices of …

Use of asthma medication during pregnancy and risk of specific congenital anomalies: A European case-malformed control study.
2015
Background: Pregnant women with asthma need to take medication during pregnancy. Objective: We sought to identify whether there is an increased risk of specific congenital anomalies after exposure to antiasthma medication in the first trimester of pregnancy. Methods: We performed a population-based case-malformed control study testing signals identified in a literature review. Odds ratios (ORs) of exposure to the main groups of asthma medication were calculated for each of the 10 signal anomalies compared with registrations with nonchromosomal, nonsignal anomalies as control registrations. In addition, exploratory analyses were done for each nonsignal anomaly. The data set included 76,249 reg…
Hepatitis C virus prevalence and level of intervention required to achieve the WHO targets for elimination in the European Union by 2030: a modelling…
2017
Background Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a leading cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. In the European Union (EU), treatment and cure of HCV with direct-acting antiviral therapies began in 2014. WHO targets are to achieve a 65% reduction in liver-related deaths, a 90% reduction of new viral hepatitis infections, and 90% of patients with viral hepatitis infections being diagnosed by 2030. This study assessed the prevalence of HCV in the EU and the level of intervention required to achieve WHO targets for HCV elimination. Methods We populated country Markov models for the 28 EU countries through a literature search of PubMed and Embase between Jan 1, 2000, and March 31, 201…
Impact of Global Economic Crisis on the European Welfare States
2013
The global economic crisis and the subsequent weaker growth are putting under pressure welfare states in the EU. This paper aims at discussing the effects of the crisis at the social level and at identifying whether the classic European welfare state models (Nordic, Continental, Anglo-Saxon and Mediterranean) are still valid in today’s economy. An answer will be tried using the mathematical tool of principal components analysis. The results will be observed in graphs where the states taken into consideration respect the classical welfare models or they regroup themselves into new circumstances’ adapted models. Even though the classical welfare models are generally still checked up with the …
Cost-Effectiveness Analysis: Stress Ulcer Bleeding Prophylaxis with Proton Pump Inhibitors, H2 Receptor Antagonists
2012
Abstract Objectives Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and H2-receptor antagonists (H2RAs) present varying pharmacological efficacy in preventing stress ulcer bleeding (SUB) in intensive care units. The literature also reports disparate rates of ventilator-assisted pneumonia (VAP) as side effects of these treatments. We compared the cost-effectiveness of these two prophylactic pharmacological options. Methods We constructed a decision tree with a 60-day time horizon for patients at high risk for developing SUB, receiving either PPIs or H2RAs. For each treatment strategy, patients could be in one of three states of health: SUB, VAP, or no complication. Contemporary, clinically relevant probabilit…
Consensus against all odds: explaining the persistence of EU sanctions on Russia
2020
In response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine in 2014, the EU introduced sanctions on Moscow. Despite increasing polarisation among member states after imposition, the sanctions package was consistently renewed. How can sanctions persistence be explained? While scholarly accounts highlight German leadership, commitment to norms, and policymakers’ engagement, the EU’s ability to uphold the sanctions in the face of uneven support among member states remains puzzling. With the help of a two-level game framework, according to which actors make decisions based on the interplay between the domestic and international levels, we argue that the interaction between the Council and domestic politics help…
Illness perception, mood and coping strategies in allergic rhinitis: are there differences among ARIA classes of severity?
2014
Background: This study was designed to assess if illness perception, mood state and coping strategies differ according to allergic rhinitis (AR) persistence and severity. Methods: Illness perception, mood profiles, coping behaviors and rhinitis symptoms were assessed by means of validated tools inpatients classified according to the Allergic Rhinitis and Its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) guidelines. Results: Two hundred and thirty-one patients underwent data analysis. No difference in age, sex, socio-economic status, smoking habits was detected comparing patients according to AR severity, duration or 4 ARIA classes. Patients with intermittent AR reported higher scores than those with persistent A…
Phase Behavior of TmVO4 under Hydrostatic Compression: An Experimental and Theoretical Study
2020
We present a structural and optical characterization of magnetoelastic zircon-type TmVO4 at ambient pressure and under high pressure. The properties under high pressure have been determined experimentally under hydrostatic conditions and theoretically using density functional theory. By powder X-ray diffraction we show that TmVO4 undergoes a first-order irreversible phase transition to a scheelite structure above 6 GPa. We have also determined (from powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction) the bulk moduli of both phases and found that their compressibilities are anisotropic. The band gap of TmVO4 is found to be Eg = 3.7(2) eV. Under compression the band gap opens linearly, until it unde…
Bidirectional photo-switching of the spin state of iron(II) ions in a triazol based spin crossover complex within the thermal hysteresis loop
2009
Abstract We have investigated the effect of short laser pulses (532 nm, 4 ns, −2 ) on the spin state of iron(II) ions in the spin crossover compound {[Fe II (Htrz) 2 (trz)](BF 4 )} within the hysteresis region of the high-spin (HS) to low-spin (LS) first-order thermal phase transition. Using Raman spectroscopy we have evidenced quasi-complete HS → LS as well as LS → HS photo-conversions, which can be induced by a single laser shot in the descending (351 K) and ascending (378 K) branches of the hysteresis loop, respectively. No effect has been observed, however, close to the center of the hysteresis loop even for repeated exposures.
