Steam catalytic cracking of naphtha over ZSM-5 zeolite for production of propene and ethene: Micro and macroscopic implications of the presence of st…

2012

One option to produce more ethene and propene can be to crack naphtha type fractions in dedicated smaller FCC units. We present here the results obtained for high temperature steam catalytic cracking (SCC) of a representative naphtha product (n-heptane) with ZSM-5. It has been found that under those conditions the presence of steam produces an irreversible dealumination of the zeolite as well as a reversible deactivation due to the interaction of water with active sites with a negative effect on protolytic cracking. A kinetic decay model that takes into account the two phenomena has been developed. The apparent activation energy is lower in the presence of steam. It appears that whilst the …

Methanol fuel processor and PEM fuel cell modeling for mobile application

2010

International audience; The use of hydrocarbon fed fuel cell systems including a fuel processor can be an entry market for this emerging technology avoiding the problem of hydrogen infrastructure. This article presents a 1 kW low temperature PEM fuel cell system with fuel processor, the system is fueled by a mixture of methanol and water that is converted into hydrogen rich gas using a steam reformer. A complete system model including a fluidic fuel processor model containing evaporation, steam reformer, hydrogen filter, combustion, as well as a multi-domain fuel cell model is introduced. Experiments are performed with an IDATECH FCS1200™ fuel cell system. The results of modeling and experi…

Evolution of emerging Fusarium mycotoxins contents throughout the shelf-life period of food

2014

which is cooked by steaming. It has been historically eaten in North African countries but nowadays its consumption is widely extended all around the world. As a cereal-based food, semolina is highly susceptible to contamination by mycotoxin-producing fungi. The presented procedure involves a modified QuEChERSbased extraction of 24 mycotoxins (15-ADON, 3-ADON, AFLAB1, AFLAB2, AFLAG1, AFLAG2, BEA, DON, DAS, ENA, ENA1, ENB, ENB1, FB1, FB2, FB3, FUSX, HT-2, NEO, NIV, OTA, STG, T2, ZEA) produced by Aspergillus, Penicillum and Fusarium fungi. The validation was performed by analyzing recovery samples at three different spiked concentrations with four replicates (n=4) at each concentration. Recov…

A tool for evaluating geothermal power exploitability and its application to Ischia, Southern Italy

2015

Abstract The paper proposes a method to evaluate the potential for electric power production at any site of possible geothermal interest. Accounting for geological data of the reservoirs, the method allows the computation of the available electrical power of the investigated site. Electrical energy production from geothermal sources is realized through different techniques, such as single flash and double flash, dry steam, and binary ORC plants. The technique chosen to be the most productive is determined by analyzing a specific range of geofluid properties, mainly temperature and pressure. Moreover, each plant typology has a global efficiency that may be correlated to geofluid enthalpy by …

Bioaccessibility of glucoraphanin from broccoli using anin vitrogastrointestinal digestion model

2014

This study investigated the effect of cooking methods on the degradation of glucoraphanin (GR) in broccoli and the bioaccessibility of this compound through simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Broccoli was cooked using three different techniques: boiling, steaming and microwave cooking. Then, GR was extracted and quantified by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). In addition, the cooked samples were added to a system that simulates the digestion characteristics of the mouth, stomach and duodenum. Samples were drawn before and after the digestion, and GR bioaccessibility was calculated. GR losses were higher when broccoli was boiled (47.03%), followed by …

Abstract: The present article deals with the perception of «the oriental», a relevant topic nowadays, especially after the events of 11 September 2001, whe…

Effects of heat and cold on health, with special reference to Finnish sauna bathing.

2018

Environmental stress such as extremely warm or cold temperature is often considered a challenge to human health and body homeostasis. However, the human body can adapt relatively well to heat and cold environments, and recent studies have also elucidated that particularly heat stress might be even highly beneficial for human health. Consequently, the aim of the present brief review is first to discuss general cardiovascular and other responses to acute heat stress, followed by a review of beneficial effects of Finnish sauna bathing on general and cardiovascular health and mortality as well as dementia and Alzheimer's disease risk. Plausible mechanisms included are improved endothelial and …

Effects of pyrolysis conditions on the porous structure development of date pits activated carbon

2012

International audience; Activated carbons were prepared from biomass of Algerian date pits for developing efficient and cheap adsorbents in the aim to remove heavy metals from waste water. Carbon adsorbents were obtained following two successive treatments: pyrolysis under dry nitrogen flow and physical activation under wet nitrogen flow. Pyrolysis process was optimized by varying some operating parameters such as temperature, nitrogen flow, heating rate and pyrolysis hold time in order to determine their effects on the porous structure development of date pits activated carbon. Chars obtained from pyrolysis process were activated with the same operating conditions (activation temperature o…

Short-term effects of Finnish sauna bathing on blood-based markers of cardiovascular function in non-naive sauna users

2018

Emerging evidence suggests that sauna bathing is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality events. However, the biochemical pathways by which sauna bathing might confer its effects on cardiovascular function are not certain. We aimed to study the acute effects of Finnish sauna bathing on various blood-based cardiovascular biomarkers. The study included 102 non-naive sauna users (54% male) with mean age of 51.9 years, who had at least one cardiovascular risk factor. Participants underwent a 30-min single sauna session (mean temperature, 73 °C). Biochemical profiling was conducted before, immediately after sauna and 30-min post-sauna. Overall median N-terminal pro…
