ChandraObservation of Cir X‐1 near the Periastron Passage: Evidence for an X‐Ray Jet?

2008

We present the results of a 25 ks long Chandra observation of the peculiar source Cir X-1 near the periastron passage. We report precise X-ray coordinates of the source, which were compatible with the optical and radio counterpart coordinates. We focus on the study of the detected emission features using the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on board the Chandra satellite. We detect emission lines associated with Mg XII, Si XIII, Si XIV, S XV, S XVI, Ar XVII, Ar XVIII, Ca XIX, Ca XX, Fe XXV, and Fe XXVI, showing an average redshift of 470 km s-1. The most intense emission features can be fitted with two lines; this is more evident for the 6.6 keV emission feature, which shows a …

Generation of radiative knots in a randomly pulsed protostellar jet

2009

HH objects are characterized by a complex knotty morphology detected mainly along the axis of protostellar jets in a wide range of bands. Evidence of interactions between knots formed in different epochs have been found, suggesting that jets may result from the ejection of plasma blobs from the source. We aim at investigating the physical mechanism leading to the irregular knotty structure observed in jets in different bands and the complex interactions occurring among blobs of plasma ejected from the stellar source. We perform 2D axisymmetric HD simulations of a randomly ejected pulsed jet. The jet consists of a train of blobs which ram with supersonic speed into the ambient medium. The in…

The X-ray emission mechanism in the protostellar jet HH 154

2004

We study the mechanism causing the X-ray emission recently detected in protostellar jets, by performing a detailed modeling of the interaction between a supersonic jet originating from a young stellar object and the ambient medium, for various values of density contrast, ν, between the ambient density and the jet, and of Mach number, M; radiative losses and thermal conduction have been taken into account. Here we report a representative case which reproduces, without any ad hoc assumption, the characteristics of the X-ray emission recently observed in the protostellar jet HH 154. We find that the X-ray emission originates from a localized blob, consistent with observations, which moves with…

Proper motions of embedded protostellar jets in Serpens

2016

Context. To investigate the dynamical properties of protostellar jets. Aims. Determine the proper motion of protostellar jets around Class 0 and Class I sources in an active star forming region in Serpens. Methods. Multi-epoch deep images in the 2.122 $\mu$m line of molecular hydrogen, v=1-0 S(1), obtained with the near-infrared instrument NOTCam over a time-scale of 10 years, are used to determine proper motion of knots and jets. K-band spectroscopy of the brighter knots is used to supply radial velocities, estimate extinction, excitation temperature, and H$_2$ column densities towards these knots. Results. We measure the proper motion of 31 knots over different time scales (2, 4, 6, and 1…

X-rays from protostellar jets: emission from continuous flows

2006

Recently X-ray emission from protostellar jets has been detected with both XMM-Newton and Chandra satellites, but the physical mechanism which can give rise to this emission is still unclear. We performed an extensive exploration of a wide space of the main parameters influencing the jet/ambient interaction. Aims include: 1) to constrain the jet/ambient interaction regimes leading to the X-ray emission observed in Herbig-Haro objects in terms of the emission by a shock forming at the interaction front between a continuous supersonic jet and the surrounding medium; 2) to derive detailed predictions to be compared with optical and X-ray observations of protostellar jets; 3) to get insight int…

The diagnostic potential of Fe lines applied to protostellar jets

2013

We investigate the diagnostic capabilities of the iron lines for tracing the physical conditions of the shock-excited gas in jets driven by pre-main sequence stars. We have analyzed the 300-2500 nm X-shooter spectra of two jets driven by the pre-main sequence stars ESO-Halpha 574 and Par-Lup 3-4. Both spectra are very rich in [FeII] lines over the whole spectral range; in addition, lines from [FeIII] are detected in the ESO-H\alpha 574 spectrum. NLTE codes along with codes for the ionization equilibrium are used to derive the gas excitation conditions of electron temperature and density, and fractional ionization. The iron gas-phase abundance is provided by comparing the iron lines emissivi…

Angular Energy Distribution of Collapsar-Jets

2008

Collapsars are fast-spinning, massive stars, whose core collapse liberates an energy, that can be channeled in the form of ultrarelativistic jets. These jets transport the energy from the collapsed core to large distances, where it is dissipated in the form of long-duration gamma-ray bursts. In this paper we study the dynamics of ultrarelativistic jets produced in collapsars. Also we extrapolate our results to infer the angular energy distribution of the produced outflows in the afterglow phase. Our main focus is to look for global energetical properties which can be imprinted by the different structure of different progenitor stars. Thus, we employ a number of pre-supernova, stellar models…

Four colour photometry of binary systems

1998

This paper presents new uvby light curves of the detached eclipsing binary CR Cas together with some H measurements. From the analysis of the photometry we have estimated preliminary values for interstellar red- dening and distance, radiative parameters of both compo- nents and an approximation to the geometrical elements of the system. The intrinsic photometric indices are com- patible with spectral types B0.5V + B1V.

Activity and Rotation in the Young Cluster h Per

2013

We study the stellar rotation-activity relation in the crucial age at which stars reach the fastest rotation. To this aim we have analyzed data of the young cluster h Per, very rich and compact, located at 2300 pc, that at an age of 13 Myr should be mainly composed of stars that have ended their contraction phase and that have not lost significant angular momentum viamagnetic breaking. To constrain the activity level of h Per members we have analyzed a deep Chandra/ACIS-I observation. Rotational periods of h Per members have been derived by Moraux et al. (2013) in the framework of the MONITOR project (Aigrain et al. 2007; Irwin et al. 2007). In the Chandra observation we have detected 1010 …

FLAMES Observations of the Star Forming Region NGC 6530

2006

Context. Mechanisms regulating the evolution of pre-main sequence stars can be understood by studying stellar properties such as rotation, disk accretion, internal mixing and binarity. To investigate such properties, we studied a sample of 332 candidate members of the massive and populous star forming region NGC 6530. Aims. We select cluster members using different membership criteria, to study the properties of pre-main sequence stars with or without circumstellar disks. Methods. We use intermediate resolution spectra including the Li I 6707.8 $\AA$ line to derive radial and rotational velocities, binarity and to measure the Equivalent Width of the lithium line; these results are combined …
