VLTI-PIONIER imaging of the red supergiant V602 Carinae

Context. Red supergiant stars possess surface features and extended molecular atmospheres. Photospheric convection may be a crucial factor of the levitation of the outer atmospheric layers. However, the mechanism responsible is still poorly understood. Aims. We image the stellar surface of V602 Carinae (V602 Car) to constrain the morphology and contrast of the surface features and of the extended atmospheric layers. Methods. The runaway instability of thick discs around black holes. II. Non constant angular momentum discs

We present results from a comprehensive number of relativistic, time-dependent, axisymmetric simulations of the runaway instability of non-constant angular momentum thick discs around black holes. This second paper extends earlier results where only constant angular momentum discs were considered. All relevant aspects of the theory of stationary thick discs around rotating black holes, necessary to build the initial state in our simulations, are presented in great detail. The angular momentum of the discs is assumed to increase outwards with the radial distance according to a power law. A rapid H? change in X Persei

A trend of decreasing Hα emission over a period of thirty minutes is apparent in a series of spectra of X Persei taken on 31 December, 1987. This change appears to be astrophysical in origin and it indicates an anomalous state for X Persei that may be linked to its transition from a Be star to a normal B star, which occurred sometime between March 1988 and November 1990.

Calibration of the XRT-SOLARB flight filters at the XACT facility of INAF-OAPA

The X-Ray Telescope (XRT) experiment on-board the Japanese satellite SOLAR-B (launch in 2006) aimed at providing full Sun field of view at ~ 1.5" angular resolution, will be equipped with two wheels of focal-plane filters to select spectral features of X-ray emission from the Solar corona, and a front-end filter to significantly reduce the visible light contamination. We present the results of the X-ray calibrations of the XRT flight filters performed at the X-ray Astronomy Calibration and Testing (XACT) facility of INAF-OAPA. We describe the instrumental set-up, the adopted measurement technique, and present the transmission vs. energy and position measurements.

The BeppoSAX 0.1–18 keV spectrum of the bright atoll source GX 9+1: an indication of the source distance

We report the results of a long, 350 ks, BeppoSAX observation of the bright atoll source GX 9+1 in the 0.12-18 keV energy range. During this observation GX 9+1 showed a large count rate variability in its lightcurve. From its color-color diagram we selected six zones and extracted the source energy spectrum from each zone. We find that the model, composed of a blackbody plus a Comptonized component absorbed by an equivalent hydrogen column of ~1.4 ¿ 1022 cm-2, fits the spectra in the energy range 1-18 keV well; however, below 1 keV a soft excess is present. Models and Astrophysical Parameters of High Mass X-ray Binaries

The objective of this work is the High Mass X-ray Binaries. These systems consist of a neutron star orbiting around a star of spectral type OB. According to the luminosity class of the optical companion they split into Supergiant X-ray binaries and Be/X-ray systems. In both systems the high energy radiation is due to the accretion phenomenum, but in the first case the accreted metter comes from the strong stellar wind of the primary and in the second case it comes from the circumstellar envelope surrounding the Be star equator. High‐Resolution X‐Ray Spectroscopy of the Post–T Tauri Star PZ Telescopii

We present an analysis of the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer observation of the rapidly rotating P_(rot)=0.94 d post T Tauri (~20 Myr old) star PZ Telescopii, in the Tucana association. Using two different methods we have derived the coronal emission measure distribution, em(T), and chemical abundances. The em(T) peaks at log T = 6.9 and exhibits a significant emission measure at temperatures log T > 7. The coronal abundances are generally ~0.5 times the solar photospheric values that are presumed fairly representative of the composition of the underlying star. A method to constrain the neutron star magnetic field in Low Mass X-ray Binaries

We describe here a method to put an upper limit to the strength of the magnetic field of neutron stars in low mass X‐ray binaries for which the spin period and the X‐ray luminosity during X‐ray quiescent periods are known. This is obtained using simple considerations about the position of the magnetospheric radius during quiescent periods. We applied this method to the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4‐3658, which shows coherent X‐ray pulsations at a frequency of ∼ 400 Hz and a quiescent X‐ray luminosity of ∼ 5 × 1031 ergs/s, and found that B ⩽ 5 × 108 Gauss in this source. An X-shooter survey of star forming regions: Low-mass stars and sub-stellar objects

We present preliminary results of our X-shooter survey in star forming regions. In this contribution we focus on sub-samples of young stellar and sub-stellar objects (YSOs) in the Lupus star forming region and in the TW Hya association. We show that the X-shooter spectra are suitable for conducting several parallel studies such as YSO + disk fundamental parameters, accretion and outflow activity in the very low-mass (VLM) and sub-stellar regimes, as well as magnetic activity in young VLM YSOs, and Li abundance determinations.
