HIV infekcija ģimenes ārstu praksēs Latvijā
2019

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Recent years have witnessed a medicalization of obesity, promoting a classification as a disease or disability in order to reduce or protect against weight stigma and discrimination. This study sought to investigate the public understanding of the disability and disease concepts in obesity, their acceptance, and association with weight stigma. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> In a representative German population sample (<i>n</i> = 2,524), public views of obesity as a disease or disability were assessed via a self-report questionnaire. For the assessment of weight stigma, the Weight Control/Blame subscale from the…
Perceived public stigma towards schizophrenia among healthcare students: The relationship with diagnostic labelling and contact with people with schi…
2021
Objectives This study aimed at investigating the relationship between perceived public stigma towards people with schizophrenia (PWS) and their family members in a large sample of medical and psychology students. We hypothesised that: a) schizophrenia labelling would be related to greater perceived public stigma; b) contact with PWS would be related with lower perceived stigma; c) perceived public stigma would be similar between medical and psychology students and would be higher among students attending the clinical stage compared to their pre-clinical colleagues. Methods Participants were 592 students attending either the pre-clinical or clinical stage of coursework in Medicine and Psycho…

Comparison of subconjunctival microinvasive glaucoma surgery and trabeculectomy
2021
Purpose To assess surgical success and the post-operative development of intraocular pressure between XEN45® gelstent, Preserflo® MicroShunt and trabeculectomy with mitomycin C. Methods Data from 105 eyes from 105 patients of matched cases with refractory open-angle glaucoma, who underwent surgery between January 2019, and August 2020, were evaluated. Patients underwent either stand-alone XEN gelstent insertion with Mitomycin C, stand-alone Preserflo with Mitomycin C or trabeculectomy with Mitomycin C. The primary outcome was the proportion of complete surgical success at 6 months post-operatively (i.e. intraocular pressure between 5mmHg and 18mmHg, no revision surgery, no loss of light per…

Setting Fernandez-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain. Methods A myopic or toric ICL was implanted after PKP in eyes unable to wear glasses or contact lenses and for which corneal laser surgery was contraindicated. The uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), refractive error, and endothelial cell count were recorded preoperatively and 24 months postoperatively. Results Preoperatively, the 15 eyes had myopia from −2.00 to −17.00 diopters (D) or astigmatism from −1.50 to −7.00 D. …
Wrong Hand, Wrong Children? The Education of Left-Handed Children in Soviet Latvia
2019
Left-handers have always been surrounded by stigma and controversy, and attitudes toward this group have always been rooted in the ideas and traditions of power relations existing in a given society. Thus, the goal of this study is to describe the retraining of left-handers as it was conducted in Soviet education. The impact of political power on an individual’s body-mind interaction is a significant problem in research on the creation of the “New Soviet Man.” The teaching of left-handed children in the Soviet Union is a noteworthy example of the totalitarian regime’s illusionary endeavors to change human nature. The Soviet education envisaged neither a special attitude nor any particular p…
