Rebuilding Palermo in the Middle Ages: A Virtual Approach

2020

A long sequence of demolitions, transformations, interpretative restorations eliminated or compromised a series of civil and religious buildings built between the XII and early XVI centuries in Palermo. For many of these architectures, graphic, photographic and documentary evidence exists and can be found. Within an extensive project of the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo, based on the collaboration between different disciplines, we intend to offer an essay of the possible results that the synergy between historical research and representation can offer. Chosen case is a fifteenth-century civil building located in the San Francesco district, of which some fragments r…

Recensione di Cometa M. (2017), Il Trionfo della morte di Palermo. Un’allegoria della modernità, Quodlibet, Macerata

2019

Michele Cometa’s book analyzes the fifteenth-century fresco Il Trionfo della Morte (The Triumph of Death), conceived for the courtyard of the Ospedale Grande e Nuovo of Palazzo Sclafani in Palermo and currently housed in the Regional Gallery of Palazzo Abatellis, in the same city. The approach is inspired by Visual Culture studies: there are historical reconstructions and references to previous critical analyses of the pictorial work, but the fresco is interpreted in a new way, considering its narrative structure, thematic clusters as well as the allegories, the medieval topoi and the different cultural influences present in Sicily at the time.

2013

Vittorio Ugo (Palermo, 1938-2005) is an Italian architect, known mostly in Italy and France as theorist and critic. Whereas, much less known is his architectural work as author of projects on different scales: architecture, urban-planning, design, which Ugo himself, later on, would have considered as a pastime of his young age. In his practice of architecture, the author of the article see, on the contrary, the roots of his theoretical thought. Born from a family of artists - his grandfather was a sculptor, his father an architect - he was looking for an original way to be architect, feeling an ethical need to see architecture from a scientific point of view. Getting back to the work of Vit…

La Wagnerschule (Vienna 1894-1912): Wagner e la Moderne Architekture (The Wagnerschule (Vienna 1894-1912): Wagner and the Moderne Architekture)

2018

2022

In the processes of embellishment or reconstruction of the Benedictine churches in southern Italy and in Sicily, during the sixteenth century, great care was put in equipping them with magnificent wooden choirs. This contribution retraces an artistic journey that from the abbey of San Martino delle Scale, near Palermo, passing through the complex of SS. Severino and Sossio in Naples, goes back to the abbey of Montecassino. In fact, the latter is the starting point of the sequence of the three choirs examined, with a specific focus on the architectural themes present in them and in particular the series of windows carved into the backs of the upper stalls. The vicissitudes of the three choir…
