Substance Use During Pregnancy, Postpartum Depression and Child Outcomes: A Longitudinal Study

2009

Introduction:Although it is well know that the substance use during pregnancy has a negative impact on mother and child health, there are few data on pregnancy - related substance use as a risk factor for postpartum depression and child outcomes.Aims: To determine maternal and child outcomes at 8 and 32 weeks postpartum of women who reported substance use during pregnancy.Method:This is a cohort study of 1804 Caucasian women in postpartum. Exclusion criteria: psychiatric disorders during pregnancy. Women were evaluated at 2-3 days, 8 and 32 weeks postpartum. Socio-demographic, obstetric, personal and family psychiatric history and substance use during pregnancy; the Edimburgh Postpartum Dep…

Maternal pre- and postnatal mental health trajectories and child mental health and development

2011

Pregnancy and early motherhood involve uncertainty and change, which can evoke mental health problems. We identified maternal mental health trajectories in pre- and postnatal period, and examined their association with later child mental health and development. Finnish mothers reported psychological distress (General Health Questionnaire [GHQ-36]) and depressive (Beck Depression Inventory [BDI-13]) symptoms in pregnancy (T1; N = 788) and two months (T2; N = 657) and 12 months (T3; N = 545) postpartum. Both parents accounted their child’s mental health (Behavior Assessment System for Children [BASC]) and social (Social Skills Rating System [SSRS], Child Behavior Scale [CBS]) and cognitive d…

Paternal and Maternal Transition to Parenthood: The Risk of Postpartum Depression and Parenting Stress

2015

Transition to parenthood represents an important life event increasing vulnerability to psychological disorders. Postpartum depression and parenting distress are the most common psychological disturbances and a growing scientific evidence suggests that both mothers and fathers are involved in this developmental crisis. This paper aims to explore maternal and paternal experience of transition to parenthood in terms of parenting distress and risk of postpartum depression. Seventy-five couples of first-time parents were invited to compile the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form in the first month of children life. Study sample reported very high level…

P-992 - Smoking during pregnancy and postnatal period and postpartum depression

2012

Introduction Substance use in pregnancy is an increasingly common problem and has become an important public health issue. Postpartum depression has a high prevalence (10%) of women in Spanish population. Objetive/aim To study the impact of perinatal tobacco use in postpartum depression. Methods A cohort study of 1804 puerperal Spanish Caucasian women of general population. Variables collected: socio-demographic, obstetric, personal and family psychiatric history, substance use during pregnancy and 6 months postpartum, depressive symptoms (EPDS) and anxiety traits (STAI) at 2–3 days, 8 weeks and 32 weeks postpartum. Tranexamic acid for the prevention of blood loss after cesarean section: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled tria…

2023

Objective: Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a cost-effective intervention for the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) in women undergoing cesarean section but the evidence to support its use is conflicting. We conducted this meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of TXA in low- and high-risk cesarean deliveries. Data sources: We searched MEDLINE (via PubMed), Embase, the Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials.gov, and WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP) portal from inception to April 2022 (updated October 2022 and February 2023) with no language restrictions. Additionally, grey literature sources were also explored. Study eligibility criteria: All randomized contr…

Postpartum Hemorrhage: Conservative Treatments

2023

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is an obstetric emergency representing the first cause of obstetric mortality and a frequent cause of severe maternal morbidity. It can complicate vaginal or cesarean deliveries and accounts for 25% of all maternal deaths worldwide, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). Primary PPH is defined as blood loss from the genital tract of at least 500 ml after vaginal or 1000 ml following cesarean delivery within 24 h postpartum, whereas secondary PPH is defined as any significant bleeding from the birth canal occurring between 24 h and 12 weeks postnatally. Uterine atony is reported as the main cause of PPH and accounts for 75%–90% of primary PPH. When ut…

Parental Pre- and Postpartum Mental Health Predicts Child Mental Health and Development

2017

Objective To identify interplay of early maternal and paternal mental health symptoms for predicting child mental health and development. Background Research on family mental health has largely excluded fathers, although the well-being of both parents is likely to be important for child development. In this study, we analyzed (a) intrafamilial dynamics between mothers' and fathers' early mental health symptoms and (b) the importance of separate (mother and father) and joint (additive, hierarchical, and buffering) theoretical models of parental mental health for predicting child mental health and development. Method Finnish mothers and fathers (N = 763), half of whom conceived through assist…

Background: The aim of this study was to explore how pelvic girdle pain after delivery influences women’s daily life in Norway. Knowledge about living with post-partum pelvic girdle pain is lacking. Method: A phenomenological–hermeneutical design with qualitative semi-structured interviews was used. A strategic selection procedure was chosen to recruit participants from physiotherapy clinics and a regional hospital in Norway. Five women with clinically verified pelvic girdle pain after delivery were included. Data were imported into NVivo9 and analysed in three steps: naive reading, structural analysis and comprehensive understanding of the text. Results: Three themes influencing the women’…

Thomas S. Szasz, precursor de la psiquiatría crítica

2015

Reoperation and the centrifugal pump?

1992

Postperfusion syndrome is still a problem in long cardiac operations using extracorporeal circulation (ECC). To evaluate whether or not centrifugal blood pumping during open heart surgery is beneficial, a randomized, prospective study was undertaken of 50 consecutive patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass grafting. The patients were divided into two groups of 25 each. In group 1 a centrifugal pump (Biomedicus) was used as arterial blood pump, while in group 2 a roller pump (Stockert) was used. The two groups did not differ significantly and the number of variables during surgery was kept low (identical perfusion set, two surgeons, minimal cardiotomy suction). The parameters stu…
