Motor Learning in Response to Different Experimental Pain Models Among Healthy Individuals: A Systematic Review

2022

Learning new movement patterns is a normal part of daily life, but of critical importance in both sport and rehabilitation. A major question is how different sensory signals are integrated together to give rise to motor adaptation and learning. More specifically, there is growing evidence that pain can give rise to alterations in the learning process. Despite a number of studies investigating the role of pain on the learning process, there is still no systematic review to summarize and critically assess investigations regarding this topic in the literature. Here in this systematic review, we summarize and critically evaluate studies that examined the influence of experimental pain on motor …

Patient selection, echocardiographic screening and treatment strategies for interventional tricuspid repair using the edge-to-edge repair technique

2018

Severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) has long been neglected despite its well-known association with mortality. While surgical mortality rates remain high in isolated tricuspid valve surgery, interventional TR repair is rapidly evolving as an alternative to cardiac surgery in selected patients at high surgical risk. Currently, interventional edge-to-edge repair is the most frequently applied technique for TR repair even though a device has not been developed for this particular indication. Due to the inherent differences in tricuspid and mitral valve anatomy and pathology, percutaneous repair of the tricuspid valve is challenging due to a variety of factors including the complexity and varia…

Treatment strategies for cancer patients with breakthrough pain.

2009

Breakthrough pain (BTP) is a transitory flare of pain superimposed on an otherwise stable pain pattern in patients treated with opioids. It is normally severe in intensity, has a rapid onset, has a variable duration (on average 30 min) and is considered a negative prognostic factor. OBJECTIVE: To verify the data in the literature about therapy strategies for BTP in cancer patients. METHODS: To find clinical trials investigating drug therapy for BTP. CONCLUSION: The treatment of BTP in cancer patients receiving opioids is principally based on the use of opioids, preferentially with a short onset. Fentanyl delivered by recently developed systems seems to be the best option to cover the tempor…

Crossing borders with social media: Online social networks and FDI

2017

Abstract Social media is embedded in today's internationalization strategy. Companies extend their reach into foreign countries by posting and tweeting. Firms also enhance their mobile capabilities in foreign markets (e.g., knowledge and reputation) through user-generated content in online social networks. Levering on the capabilities-based theory of the multinational enterprise, this paper builds upon a resource-based, industry/network-based, and institution-based view framework. The study provides a comprehensive conceptual and empirical model to explain the effect of social networks on foreign direct investment. Empirical analysis in a global panel dataset of >4500 multinational enterpri…

Computed Tomography in Nonneoplastic Space-Occupying Intracranial Lesions

1981

A number of nonneoplastic intracranial space-occupying lesions may resemble neoplasms in the CT scan, and definitive diagnosis is not possible with CT studies alone in many cases. Misinterpretations are possible, even when all clinical data are considered in the interpretation of the CT scan. However, the most accurate possiblepreoperative diagnosis is a prerequisite for decisions on therapeutic strategy and surgical approach. Therefore some cases may require the full range of conventional neuroradiological techniques and careful consideration of clinical findings for correct interpretation of the CT scan with its consequences for therapy. Table 6 summarizes the most common alternatives in …

Surgical disaster following hernia mesh infection and erroneous treatment strategy: A case report

2020

Highlights • Hernia mesh infection is easier to prevent than to cure. • A late infected hernia mesh explantation is more challenging than an early one. • Hernia mesh fragmentation following partial explantation burdens its complete removal. • An incorrect surgical strategy could catalyze a chain reaction of complications.

Endovascular thrombectomy with the AngioJet System for the treatment of intermediate-risk acute pulmonary embolism: a case report of two patients

2016

Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is one of the leading causes of death and ranks third, after myocardial infarction and cerebral stroke, among fatal hospital-related cardiovascular events [1–3]. Mortality associated with PE can be lowered by early treatments aimed at restoring patency of occluded pulmonary arteries (PAs). Although systemic thrombolysis remains the recommended management of PE [4], recent advances in endovascular techniques, especially of rheolytic thrombectomy, suggest that the endovascular approach can represent an alternative therapeutic strategy [5–9]. Here we describe endovascular treatment of two patients with acute PE. We used the AngioJet (Boston Scientific, Natick, MA,…

Ultrasound in Varicose Vein Treatment

2014

Diagnosis is a prerequisite for all treatment strategies. Duplex ultrasound is the best diagnostic tool for varicose veins for all expressions of the disease (Nicolaides Circulation 102:126–163, 2000). All types of intervention on varicose veins have their own special demands on ultrasound. Ultrasound-guided vein mapping on the skin is very helpful prior to saphenous stripping (See Sect. 12.1), and it is absolutely indispensible for CHIVA (See Sect. 12.2). In endovascular thermal therapies (See Sect. 12.3) or foam sclerotherapy of trunk veins (See Sect. 12.4), ultrasound is an essential part of the treatment process. The actual procedures will only be explained here in relation to ultrasoun…

Treatment strategies and outcome of the exstrophy–epispadias complex in germany: data from the german CURE-Net

2020

Introduction: To evaluate the impact of reconstructive strategies and post-operative management on short- and long-term surgical outcome and complications of classical bladder exstrophy (CBE) patients' comprehensive data of the multicenter German-wide Network for Congenital Uro-Rectal malformations (CURE-Net) were analyzed. Methods: Descriptive analyses were performed between 34 prospectively collected CBE patients born since 2009, median 3 months old [interquartile range (IQR), 2–4 months], and 113 cross-sectional patients, median 12 years old (IQR, 6–21 years). Results: The majority of included individuals were males (67%). Sixty-eight percent of the prospectively observed and 53% of the …

External knowledge sourcing for R&D activities: antecedents and implications of governance mode choice

2014

This paper investigates how internal and external factors affect the choice between alliances and joint ventures (A&JVs) and mergers and acquisitions (M&As) for the external sourcing of research and development (R&D) activities, and whether or not such a choice is really con- tingent, that is, is it the best choice in terms of its impact on firms’ innovative performance under those circumstances? We build a set of hypotheses based on both the transaction-cost theory and the resource-based view, and test them through a secondary data source analy- sis. We found that companies adopt either R&D M&A or A&JV depending on internal (e.g. resources and capabilities, innovation experience) and exter…
