Transformative direction of innovation and measurement of uncaptured GDP in the digital economy

2017

The Internet has dramatically changed business dynamics and our daily lives by providing extraordinary services and welfare never anticipated before. However, productivity in industrialized countries has confronted an apparent decline. The ICT advanced firms and countries are suffering with low marginal productivity of their ICT investments. This reveals the two-faced nature of ICT and productivity paradox in the digital economy. With the progression of technology and transition from commodity- oriented to information society, the consumers’ preferences are believed to be shifted beyond economic value. The digitization has promoted the free and un- monetized consumption of digital goods and…

From job crafting to home crafting: A daily diary study among six European countries

2019

The actions that individuals take to proactively craft their jobs are important to help create more meaningful and personally enriching work experiences. But do these proactive behaviors have implications beyond working life? Inspired by the suggestion that individuals aim for a meaningful life we examine whether on days when individuals craft their jobs, they are more likely to craft non-work activities. It also seems likely that characteristics of the home environment moderate these cross-domain relationships. We suggest that crafting crosses domains particularly when individuals gain resources through high autonomy and high workload at home. We partly supported our model through a daily…

Diaspora Start-Up Programs and Creative Industries: Evidence from Romania

2021

Romania is one of the main countries of origin for intra-European migration. The national authorities recently implemented the first major program —Diaspora Start-up—to support the business initiatives of Romanian citizens who live abroad and who are interested in opening a business in their home country. This scheme was developed in parallel with a broader program—Romania Start-up Plus—which was designed to support the entrepreneurial initiatives of individuals residing inside the country. These programs have already supported over 8,600 non-agricultural start-ups created in urban areas. This study conducted a comparative analysis of the two programs based on different criteria and explore…

Brand social representations: strategic perspectives for a fitness club

2009

International audience; The aim of this study was to identify an accurate tool to enable fitness club managers to discover those opinions or stereotypes which represent obstacles to joining their organisations. Starting with brand image, the analysis then considered social representations as relevant constructs for apprehending these opinions or prejudices. The use of a word association task and the model of basic cognitive schemes (Rouquette, 1990; 1994) provided access to the salient elements of the social representations of a particular sport brand and the way they are structured. The procedure combining these two stages represented a diagnostic tool for identifying the attractive and un…

Using uncertain preferential information from stakeholders to assess the acceptability of alternative forest management plans

2017

In forest management planning, participatory planning processes are often encouraged as a means to acquire relevant information and to enhance the stakeholders' acceptability of alternative plans. This requires the aggregation of the stakeholders' preferences that can be done in a wide variety of manners. The aggregation process strives to reduce the information into a single set of preferences that simplifies the information and allows for the use of discrete decision support tools. Depending on how the preferences are aggregated, a wide range of plan rankings can emerge. Although this range of ranking complicates the issue of plan selection, it does highlight the uncertainty involved in a…

The curse of agility : The Nokia Corporation and the loss of market dominance in mobile phones, 2003–2013

2021

We investigate how and why the Nokia Corporation failed to develop a successful strategic response to the threats of Apple and Google in the smartphone business and instead worsened its situation through several badly timed decisions. We identify key choices in technology and organisational design that jointly constituted sufficient cause for the abandonment of the mobile phone business. By focusing on choices instead of attributes (e.g. fear or hubris), we make progress in strategic failure research and simultaneously emphasise the strength of oral history methods and the philosophy of history as fruitful starting points for such an inquiry. peerReviewed

Architecture of dissonance : a study on the strategic management process of higher education internationalization

2018

In this study I analyze the neglected notion of organizational architecture in the strategic process of internationalization in the context of higher education. I examine the internationalization process through the development and management of international master’s degree programmes and their relation to the broader strategy of one particular Finnish university. I interviewed acting coordinators and directors of the programmes regarding their view on the administrative work, as well as the structures and resources, related to the programmes. Strategy documents, internal evaluations, and statistics were also analyzed. The omission of an explicit strategy and strategic program for internat…

Making Sense or Betting on the Future? : Identifying Antenarratives of AI projects in a Large Financial Organization

2019

The future is uncertain, but what is certain is that we can make sense of the future through our ‘antenarratives’. In this study, I shed light on prospective sensemaking and apply the concept of antenarrative as a framework to identify how strategy practitioners make sense of AI projects. The empirical case organization is a large Finnish financial organization that aims to be a digital leader. The case organization is currently developing and implementing AI in its business operations, a recent and emerging wave in the financial business sector. Following a thematic analysis, the narratives that seem to either reflect positive (that promote) or negative (that impede) changes were examined.…
