Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is defined by excessive triglycerides (TGs) accumulation in the liver (>5% of hepatocytes histologically) in the absence of alcohol excess. The NAFLD ranges from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis and cirrhosis. The NAFLD and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are now the number one cause of liver disease in Western countries. The prevalence of NAFLD is increasing but is underreported, and the epidemiology and demographic characteristics vary worldwide. Volumetric changes of articular cartilage during stress relaxation in unconfined compression

The time-dependent lateral expansion and load relaxation of cartilage cylinders subjected to unconfined compression were simultaneously recorded. These measurements were used to (1) test the assumption of incompressibility for articular cartilage, (2) measure the Poisson's ratio of articular cartilage in compression and (3) investigate the relationship between stress relaxation and volumetric change. Mechanical tests were performed on fetal, calf, and adult humeral head articular cartilage. The instantaneous Poisson's ratio of adult cartilage was 0.49+/-0.08 (mean+S.D.), thus confirming the assumption of incompressibility for this tissue. A note on the higher order strain and stress tensors within deformation gradient elasticity theories: Physical interpretations and comparisons

Abstract Higher order strain and stress tensors encompassed within gradient elasticity theories are discussed with a particular concern to the physical meaning of double and triple stresses. A single rule is shown to hold for the physical interpretation of the indices of a higher order stress tensor both within distortion gradient and strain gradient theories, whereas the analogous Mindlin’s rule holds only within distortion gradient theories. Double and triple stresses are discussed separately with the aid of simple illustrative examples. A corrigendum to a previous paper by the author (IJSS 50 (2013) 3749–3765) is also presented.

A shallow water model with eddy viscosity for basins with varying bottom topography

2001

The motion of an incompressible fluid confined to a shallow basin with a varying bottom topography is considered. We introduce appropriate scalings into a three-dimensional anisotropic eddy viscosity model to derive a two-dimensional shallow water model. The global regularity of the resulting model is proved. The anisotropic form of the stress tensor in our three-dimensional eddy viscosity model plays a critical role in ensuring that the resulting shallow water model dissipates energy.

A nonhomogeneous nonlocal elasticity model

Nonlocal elasticity with nonhomogeneous elastic moduli and internal length is addressed within a thermodynamic framework suitable to cope with continuum nonlocality. The Clausius–Duhem inequality, enriched by the energy residual, is used to derive the state equations and all other thermodynamic restrictions upon the constitutive equations. Reversible stress-induced lipid body formation in fast twitch rat myofibers

We analyzed the existence of lipid bodies (LBs) in the fast twitch rat flexor digitorum brevis (FDB) myofibers and found that these structures were scarce. However, isolation procedure of the myofibers, heath shock, viral infection or the glycosylation inhibitor tunicamycin induced formation of the LBs, which were stationary structures flanking Z lines. We next infected FDB myofibers with recombinant Semliki Forest virus expressing caveolin 3-yellow fluorescent protein (cav3-YFP) since this chimeric protein was targeted to the LBs facilitating their further analysis. Introduction: The PD-1/PD-L1 axis is hijacked by lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) cells to escape immune surveillance. PD-L1 expression in LUAD is affected, among others, by the metabolic trafficking between tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment (TME). Methods: Correlation between PD-L1 expression and iron content within the TME was established on FFPE LUAD tissue samples. Background Flow cytometry has become a choice methodology for microbiological research. However, functional cytometric assays in live bacteria are still limited. This is due, in part, to the cell wall impairing penetration of vital dyes in bacteria, thus imposing permeabilization procedures.
