Autophagy
2021
In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. Here, we present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide…
MAGNESIUM IN AGING
2011
Magnesium and aging.
2009
Over the past decades, the clinical relevance and biological significance of magnesium (Mg) have been documented. Deficiency in Mg, aside from having a negative impact on the energy production pathway required by mitochondria to generate ATP, also reduces the threshold antioxidant capacity of the aging organism and its resistance to free-radical damage. Mg also acts as an antioxidant against free radical damage of the mitochondria. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress have both been identified as pathogenic factors in aging and in several age-related diseases. Chronic Mg deficiency results in excessive production of oxygen-derived free radicals and low grade inflammation. Aging is very…
Analysis of the effects of magnetic field on the induced stress in drilled plates
2013
Abstract A drilled plate of ferromagnetic material suitably coupled by coils of enameled copper wire fed by a DC power supply to 30 V is considered in this paper. It is analyzed with finite element and later experiments are performed to validate the obtained results. After polishing the plate, two strain gauges for measuring the deformation along the x axis and along the z axis are installed. The values of strain are 5 μm/m in z direction and −2 μm/m in x direction. The experimental–numerical comparison shows that the laboratory results are lower than numerical, while signs and orders of magnitude are the same. It is concluded that the results of the FEM analysis can be considered acceptabl…
STRESS GENITORIALE E MALATTIE CRONICHE: UN CONFRONTO TRA GRUPPI CLINICI
2013
Changes in Oxidative Stress Index and Lipid Peroxidation Product in the Brain of Rats with Lesion of Central Dopaminergic System after Propofol Admin…
2019
Propofol is a commonly used intravenous anesthetic agent with antioxidant properties. However, the effect of propofol on oxidative stress index (OSI) and lipid peroxidation in Parkinson’s disease is still unknown. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of propofol on OSI and malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the selected brain regions of the rats with Parkinson’s disease (PD). 32 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: I- control group, II- group with PD, III-control group with propofol, IV-PD group with propofol. 60mg/kg of propofol was given to the 8-weeks-old rats intraperitoneally, and the selected parts of the rats’ brains (frontal cortex, striatum, thalamus and hippocampu…

High Lipid Content of Prey Fish and n−3 PUFA Peroxidation Impair the Thiamine Status of Feeding-Migrating Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) and Is Reflec…
2022
Signs of impaired thiamine (vitamin B1) status in feeding-migrating Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were studied in three Baltic Sea areas, which differ in the proportion and nutritional composition of prey fish sprat (Sprattus sprattus) and herring (Clupea harengus). The concentration of n−3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n−3 PUFAs) increased in salmon with dietary lipids and n−3 PUFAs, and the hepatic peroxidation product malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration increased exponentially with increasing n−3 PUFA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n−3) concentration, whereas hepatic total thiamine concentration, a sensitive indicator of thiamine status, decreased with th…
Sea urchin embryos as an in vivo model for the assessment of manganese toxicity: developmental and stress response effects.
2008
Manganese (Mn), one of the most abundant metals in nature present in rocks, soil and water, is also found in soft bottom sediments of the oceans. It represents a trace element that is accumulated and utilized by all forms of life and plays multiple roles ranging from bone mineralization to cellular protection. Although Mn is an essential nutrient, exposure of cells/organisms to high levels of Mn cause toxicity. In the marine environment, increased concentrations of bio-available Mn often result from anthropogenic activities, and consequently, Mn represents a new important factor in environmental contamination. Emission of Mn into the marine environment occurs from metallurgic and chemical i…
The …
