Early ROS-mediated DNA damage and oxidative stress biomarkers in Monoclonal B Lymphocytosis

2012

Monoclonal B Lymphocytosis (MBL) is defined as asymptomatic monoclonal B-cell expansion characterised by a CLL-phenotype, but with less than 5 x 10(9)/I circulating cells. Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated cell damage plays a critical role in the initiation of carcinogenesis as well as in malignant transformation. The goal of this study was to perform an analysis of the oxidative stress statuses of patients affected by MBL and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). We examined peripheral blood and urine specimens from 29 patients with MBL, 55 with CLL and 31 healthy subjects. There was a significant increase in the occurrence of the mutagenic base 8-oxo-2'-deoxiguanosine (8-oxo-dG) in th…

PINK1: a critical protein kinase in the molecular mechanisms involved in Cancer and Parkinson's disease

2012

Stress-strain analysis of specimens subjected to tensile loading during moisture uptake

2015

Abstract: A robust and efficient numerical method for the calculation of the internal stress state that develops within structures subjected to mechanical and steady state or transient hygroscopic loading conditions, has been developed. The method encompasses a layer by layer approach whereby the structure is discretised into plies with different material properties corresponding to the different ply moisture content. The proposed method has been validated against finite element solutions, and results from its application on a fully characterised EDT (technical name) polymer binder are presented. The impact of the moisture induced viscoelastic behaviour on the structural response of the cas…

Effects of an incremental maximal endurance exercise stress-induced cortisol on cognitive performance

2019

Exercise; Cognitive functions; Cortisol Ejercicio físico; Funciones cognitivas; Cortisol Exercici físic; Funcions cognitives; Cortisol Objectives: It can be hypothesized that cognitive performance decreases after fatigue protocol when it coincides with the maximum peak of cortisol. The first aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of a single bout of high intensity exercise on behavioural (i.e., attention and memory) and physiological (i.e., salivary cortisol) responses. The second objective was to evaluate the effect of the performance of the cognitive tasks on cortisol levels. Methods: Thirty-four physically active men (at least 5 days/week of physical activity practice) 38.11 (1.5…

Effect of Mycorrhizal Inoculation on Melon Plants under Deficit Irrigation Regimes

2023

The shortage of good quantity and quality of water for irrigated agriculture is a major problem in arid and semiarid regions. To deal with this problem, deficit irrigation (DI) or arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation have been proposed and adopted for many crops as a tool to save water, or to improve crop tolerance to drought stress. An experiment was conducted for two consecutive years to evaluate the effect of mycorrhizal inoculation on the physiological, morphological, yield, and quality characteristics of melon plants grown under deficit irrigation. Melon crop (Cucumis melo L. cv. Helios) was grown under field conditions adopting a split-plot design with four replications, whe…

Sprint and endurance training in relation to redox and inflammatory status and biomarkers of aging in master athletes

2020

Purpose Studies have shown a positive influence of intense athletic training on several biomarkers of aging, but it remains unclear whether this influence is dependent of exercise-training-mode. This study compared redox balance, cytokine levels and biomarkers of aging between master sprinters and endurance athletes, as well as in young and middle-aged individuals as controls. Methods Participants were male master sprinters (SA, 50±8.9yrs; n=13) and endurance runners (EA, 53±8.2yrs; n=18) with remarkable athletic experience (∼25yrs of practice), besides untrained young (YC, 22.7±3.9yrs; n=17) and age-matched controls (MC, 45.5±9.8yrs; n=12). Anamnesis, anthropometrics, biomarkers of aging, …

Cerebral plasmogens and aldehydes in senescence-accelerated mice P8 and R1 : Acomparison between weaned, adult and aged mice

2006

International audience; In contrast with senescence-accelerated mice R1, SAM P8 show abnormal aging characteristics. Changes occurring during aging could be mainly caused by free radical reactions. The brain is a plasmalogen-rich tissue. These particular phospholipids may act as endogenous antioxidants, be oxidized and release long chain aldehydes and α-hydroxyaldehydes during oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to examine by GC/MS the age- and strain-related levels of plasmalogens, aldehydes and α-hydroxyaldehydes in brain homogenates of SAM P8 and R1 at weaning, 5 months and 9 months of age in order to better understand the differences between both strains. In SAM R1, the evolutio…
