Buckling of a coating strip of finite width bonded to elastic half-space

2008

AbstractA solution for buckling of a stiff strip of finite width bonded to a compliant elastic half-space and subjected to uniform axial compression is presented. Approximate semi-analytical and finite element solutions are obtained and compared with a two-dimensional case of a plate on elastic foundation. The comparison demonstrates that the two-dimensional solution can be applied to predict the buckling wavelength and critical compressive strain when the width of the strip is equal to or larger than the buckling wavelength. For narrow strips, the wavelength is smaller and critical strain is higher than that of a plate on foundation.

Simplified Model for Compressive Behavior of Concrete Columns Strengthened by Steel Angles and Strips

2010

This paper presents an analytical model to determine the compressive response of concrete members, having a square transverse cross section and reinforced with steel angles at the corners and steel strips connecting the steel angles. The model evaluates the effects of transverse strips and steel angles on confinement pressures, including strength and buckling phenomena. Compressive response was evaluated in cases of directly and indirectly loaded elements. The data produced correlate well with available experimental data.

Development of a 3D CZT Spectrometer System with Digital Readout for Hard X/Gamma-Ray Astronomy

2019

We report on the development and of a complete X/γ rays detection system (10-1000 keV) based on CZT spectrometers with spatial resolution in three dimensions (3D) and a digital electronics acquisition chain. The prototype is made by packing four linear modules, each composed of one 3D CZT sensors. Each sensors is realized using a single spectroscopic graded CZT crystal of about 20×20×5 mm3. An electrode structure consisting of 12 collecting anodes with a pitch of 1.6 mm and 3 drift strips between each pair of anodes for 48 strips (0.15 mm wide) on the anodic side was adopted. The cathode is made of 10 strips with a pitch of 2 mm and orthogonal to anode side strips. Since the reading of the …

Effects of Different Test Setups on the Experimental Tensile Behaviour of Basalt Fibre Bidirectional Grids for FRCM Composites

2020

Fibre-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites have been effectively used during the last ten years for the strengthening of existing concrete and masonry structures. These composite materials are made of medium- and high-strength fibre meshes embedded in inorganic matrices. Synthetic fibres are the ones that are currently the most used

Effect of corner over-reinforcing strips on the compressive behaviour of TRM confined masonry columns

2020

Several recent works studied the efficiency of inorganic matrix composites, namely Textile Reinforced Mortar (TRM) or Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrix, for enhancing the strength and shortening capacity of masonry columns subjected to axial load. Literature studies were addressed to study the great number of variables involved in the problem, such as the nature and the grade of mortar, the strength of the fabric, the number of reinforcing layers, the type, the arrangement and the strength of the masonry, and helped to draw the first technical guidelines for practitioners and designers. All the experimental works highlighted that the actual performance of TRM confinement in masonry memb…

Long axial crystals for PET applications: The AX-PET demonstrator and beyond

2013

The usage of long, axially oriented scintillator crystals in a PET scanner has been shown by the AX-PET Demonstrator as a possible solution for a high resolution and high sensitivity PET detector. In the AX-PET implementation, arrays of wavelength shifting (WLS) strips, placed orthogonally behind every crystal layer, are used to define the axial coordinate. After extensive characterization measurements, the AX-PET Demonstrator has been successfully used for the reconstruction of several phantoms and a few rodents. Possible extensions of the AX-PET concept towards Time Of Flight capabilities have been investigated, using Philips digital SiPMs as alternative photodetector. Promising CRT value…

Responsivity measurements of 4H-SiC Schottky photodiodes for UV light monitoring

2014

We report on the design and the electro-optical characterization of a novel class of 4H-SiC vertical Schottky UV detectors, based on the pinch-off surface effect and obtained employing Ni2Si interdigitated strips. We have measured, in dark conditions, the forward and reverse I–V characteristics as a function of the temperature and the C–V characteristics. Responsivity measurements of the devices, as a function of the wavelength (in the 200 – 400 nm range), of the package temperature and of the applied reverse bias are reported. We compared devices featured by different strip pitch size, and found that the 10 μm device pitch exhibits the best results, being the best compromise in terms of fu…

Influence of FRP wrapping techniques on the compressive behavior of concrete prisms

2006

Abstract Results of an experimental investigation on the compressive behavior of concrete prisms with square cross-section, externally wrapped with carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) sheets are presented. The effects of the following parameters were analyzed: local reinforcement at the corners and continuous layers; horizontal and vertical discontinuous strips; number of continuous layers—length of specimens. An analytical model is proposed to determine the maximum bearing capacity of compressed concrete members with square cross-section and externally wrapped with FRP for the different configurations examined, and also able to consider the strength reduction with the length increase of…

GRASP and Path Relinking for the Two-Dimensional Two-Stage Cutting-Stock Problem

2007

We develop a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP) for the constrained two-dimensional two-stage cutting-stock problem. This is a special cutting problem in which the cut is performed in two phases. In the first phase, the stock rectangle is slit down its width into different vertical strips and in the second phase, each of these strips is processed to obtain the final pieces. We propose two different algorithms based on GRASP methodology. One is “piece-oriented” while the other is “strip-oriented.” Both procedures are fast and provide solutions of different structures to this cutting problem. We also propose a path-relinking algorithm, which operates on a set of elite soluti…

Casparian Strips in the Leaf Intrastelar Canals of Isoetes duriei Bory, a Mediterranean Terrestrial Species

2000

Abstract Anatomical observations, using light and fluorescence microscopy, were made on leaves of Isoetes duriei to verify the presence of casparian bands around the intrastelar canals. This peculiar anatomical feature, previously reported for some Isoetes species, is confirmed. The possible role of this endodermis-like structure, in the transport of water due to root pressure or in the accumulation of certain metabolites, is discussed in relation to the ecological and anatomical features of the species.
