Carbohydrate dynamics in particle-size fractions of sandy spodosols following forest conversion to maize cropping

International audience; In southwest France, much of the forested land on sandy spodosols has been converted to continuous maize cropping in the last few decades. To evaluate the impacts of this change on soil organic matter properties, we compared total organic C and neutral and amino sugars content in whole soil and particle size separates of two forested, and five related sites that had been either clear-cut for 12 and 18 mo, or cultivated to maize for 4-22yr. Soil carbohydrates accounted for 4-7% of the total organic C across all sites. In their natural environment plants are in close interaction with beneficial, neutral, or pathogenic microbes, which are highly dependent on carbon resources exuded by plant roots. Sugar transport, which is a key process of plant physiology, is essential to support the fate of plant-microbe interactions. During evolution, plants have acquired the ability to perceive microbial molecules, initiating specific signal transduction cascades and leading to adapted response for microbe lifestyles (avirulent, virulent, or benefic). Impact of Plasmopara viticola on starch metabolism and stomachal functions in grapevine leaves

The grapevine downy mildew affects leaves and young berries and can affect the harvest quality and quantity. The causal agent is the obligate biotroph oomycete Plasmopara viticola that induces severe physiological alterations in infected leaves. One is the abnormal accumulation of starch in oil spots, the characteristic symptoms of the disease. Another is a deregulation of stomatal movements. Stomata, natural openings on the leaf surface allowing gas exchanges between the plant and the atmosphere, stay abnormally open during the night and do no longer close upon water stress or ABA treatment in infected leaves.
