Soil remediation: humic acids as natural surfactants in the washings of highly contaminated soils

The remediation of the highly contaminated site around the former chemical plant of ACNA (near Savona) in Northern Italy is a top priority in Italy. The aim of the present work was to contribute in finding innovative and environmental-friendly technology to remediate soils from the ACNA contaminated site. Abstract. We present a sensitivity study on transatlantic dust transport, a process which has many implications for the atmosphere, the ocean and the climate. We investigate the impact of key processes that control the dust outflow, i.e., the emission flux, convection schemes and the chemical aging of mineral dust, by using the EMAC model following Abdelkader et al. (2015). To characterize the dust outflow over the Atlantic Ocean, we distinguish two geographic zones: (i) dust interactions within the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), or the dust–ITCZ interaction zone (DIZ), and (ii) the adjacent dust transport over the Atlantic Ocean (DTA) zone. After a brief review of the present knowledge of the Stratospheric sulfate layer, several possible mechanisms of formation are discussed in detail. A direct transport of low tropospheric particles into the stratosphere by convective clouds penetrating the tropopause is not very likely because these penetrations are not high enough and because of the chemical composition of the stratospheric particles. Responses of microbial activity and decomposer organisms to contamination in microcosms containing coniferous forest soil.

Soil respiration from microcosms contaminated with pentachlorophenol, 2-ethanolhexanoate, creosote, CuSO4, and benomyl was measured in order to evaluate usefulness of soil microcosms and microbial respiration rate monitoring as a toxicity test in soils with high organic matter content. Coniferous forest soil and its organisms were used as test objects. Survival of Erwinia amylovora in mature apple fruit calyces through the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state

Aims:  Survival of Erwinia amylovora, causal agent of fire blight in pome fruits and other rosaceous plants, was monitored inside mature apples calyces under some storage conditions utilized in fruit. Methods and Results:  Apple fruit calyces inoculated with two E. amylovora strains and their respective GFP-marked strains were maintained at 26° and 5°C, and the effect of copper treatment was assayed at 0·01 and 0·1 mmol l−1 CuSO4. Hemocyanin conformational changes associated with SDS-induced phenol oxidase activation.

The enzymatic activity of phenoloxidase is assayed routinely in the presence of SDS. Similar assay conditions elicit phenoloxidase activity in another type 3 copper protein, namely hemocyanin, which normally functions as an oxygen carrier. The nature of the conformational changes induced in type 3 copper proteins by the denaturant SDS is unknown. This comparative study demonstrates that arthropod hemocyanins can be converted from being an oxygen carrier to a form which exhibits phenoloxidase activity by incubation with SDS, with accompanying changes in secondary and tertiary structure. Structural effects of macrocyclic compounds and their partition in sodium dodecylsulphate aqueous solutions

The partition of 1,4,7,10,13,16-esaoxacyclooctadecane (18C6), 4,7,13,16-tetraoxa-1,10-diazacyclooctadecane (2.2), 2,5,8,11,14,17-esaoxabicyclo[16.4.0]dicosane (B18C6) and 2,5,8,15,18,21-esoxatricyclo[20.4.0.09.14]esacosane (Cy218C6) in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) aqueous solutions and their effect on the structure of surfactant aggregates has been investigated by small-angle neutron scattering.
