The Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Cadiz as a natural laboratory for paleotsunami research: Recent advancements
2021
International audience; After the 2004 Indian Ocean (IOT) and the 2011 Tohoku-oki tsunamis, new research in tsunami-related fields was strongly stimulated worldwide and also in the Mediterranean. This research growth yields substantial advancements in tsunami knowledge.Among these advancements is the “Paleotsunami” research that has marked particular progress on the reconstruction of the tsunami history of a region. As an integration of the historical documentation available in the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Cadiz areas, geological and geoarchaeological records provide the insights to define the occurrence, characteristics, and impact of tsunamis of the past. Here, we present the recent …
Toxicity of the antimalarial artemisinin and its dervatives.
2010
As long as no effective malaria vaccine is available, chemotherapy belongs to the most important weapons fighting malaria. One of the most promising new drug developments is the sesquiterpene artemisinin (ARS) and its derivatives, e.g., artemether, arteether, and sodium artesunate. Large clinical studies and meta-analyses did not show serious side effects, although proper monitoring of adverse effects in developing countries might not be a trivial task. There is a paucity of large-scale clinical trials suitable to detect rare but significant toxicity. Therefore, a final and definitive statement on the safety of artemisinins still cannot be made. In contrast, animal experiments show consider…
Enhancement of cytotoxicity of artemisinins toward cancer cells by ferrous iron
2004
Abstract Iron(II) heme-mediated activation of the peroxide bond of artemisinins is thought to generate the radical oxygen species responsible for their antimalarial activity. We analyzed the role of ferrous iron in the cytotoxicity of artemisinins toward tumor cells. Iron(II)–glycine sulfate (Ferrosanol) and transferrin increased the cytotoxicity of free artesunate, artesunate microencapsulated in maltosyl-β-cyclodextrin, and artemisinin toward CCRF-CEM leukemia and U373 astrocytoma cells 1.5- to 10.3-fold compared with that of artemisinins applied without iron. Growth inhibition by artesunate and ferrous iron correlated with induction of apoptosis. Cell cycle perturbations by artesunate an…
Icone e boschi narrativi.
Solar models with accretion. I.
2013
We generate new standard solar models using newly analyzed nuclear fusion cross sections and present results for helioseismic quantities and solar neutrino fluxes. The status of the solar abundance problem is discussed. We investigate whether nonstandard solar models with accretion from the protoplanetary disk might alleviate this problem. We examine a broad range of models, analyzing metal-enriched and metal-depleted accretion and three scenarios for the timing of accretion. Only partial solutions are found. For metal-rich accreted material (Z_ac_>~0.018) there exist combinations of accreted mass and metallicity that bring the depth of the convective zone into agreement with the helioseism…
Tila, paikka ja identiteetti Helsingin sanomien asunnottomuuskeskusteluissa : diskurssianalyysi vuosien 2010-2013 artikkeleista ja mielipidekirjoituk…
2013
Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten tilat ja niihin liitetyt identiteetit rakentuvat asunnottomuutta koskevissa Helsingin Sanomien artikkeleissa ja mielipidekirjoituksissa 1.1.2010 ja 15.4.2013 välisellä ajalla. Koska asunnottomuutta luokitellaan sen perusteella, millaisessa fyysisessä ympäristössä asunnoton yönsä viettää, kiinnostuksen kohteena on, millaisiin ympäristöihin asunnottomuus Helsingin Sanomissa asettuu ja paikallistuu. Tutkimuksen analyysimenetelmänä on käytetty diskurssianalyysiä. Fyysiseen ympäristöön liittyvien määritelmien lisäksi tarkoituksena on hahmottaa paikkoihin ja identiteetteihin liittyvää diskursiivista todellisuutta, jolloin mielenkiinto kohdistuu niihin …
Simulation of Future Geostationary Ocean Color Images
2012
The objective of this work is to simulate global images that would be provided by a theoretical ocean color sensor on a geostationary orbit at longitude 0, in order to assess the range of radiance value data reaching the sensor throughout the day for 20 spectral bands similar to those of the Ocean and Land Color Imager (OLCI). The secondary objective is to assess the illumination and viewing geometries that result in sunglint. For this purpose, we combined a radiative transfer model for ocean waters (Hydrolight) and a radiative transfer model for atmosphere (MODTRAN) to construct the simulated radiance images at the sea surface and at the Top-Of-Atmosphere (TOA). Bio-optical data from GlobC…
Measurement report: Balloon-borne in situ profiling of Saharan dust over Cyprus with the UCASS optical particle counter
2021
This paper presents measurements of mineral dust concentration in the diameter range from 0.4 to 14.0 µm with a novel balloon-borne optical particle counter, the Universal Cloud and Aerosol Sounding System (UCASS). The balloon launches were coordinated with ground-based active and passive remote-sensing observations and airborne in situ measurements with a research aircraft during a Saharan dust outbreak over Cyprus from 20 to 23 April 2017. The aerosol optical depth at 500 nm reached values up to 0.5 during that event over Cyprus, and particle number concentrations were as high as 50 cm−3 for the diameter range between 0.8 and 13.9 µm. Comparisons of the total particle number concentration…
