Charged-current neutrino and antineutrino scattering offCd116described by Skyrme forces

2014

We perform calculations of the cross sections for charged-current neutrino and antineutrino scattering off Cd-116 using ten different Skyrme interactions, at energies typical of supernova neutrinos. We use the quasiparticle random-phase approximation in its charged-changing mode (pnQRPA) to construct the required nuclear wave functions for the participant initial and final states. We compare the results of these calculations with the results of calculations based on the Bonn one-boson-exchange potential. The response of Cd-116 to supernova neutrinos is calculated by folding the obtained cross sections with suitably parametrized Fermi-Dirac distributions of the electron-neutrino and electron…

SN 1987A and the status of oscillations solutions to the solar neutrino problem

2002

We study neutrino oscillations and the level-crossing probability ${P}_{\mathrm{LSZ}}$ in power-law potential profiles $A(r)\ensuremath{\propto}{r}^{n}.$ We give local and global adiabaticity conditions valid for all mixing angles $\ensuremath{\vartheta}$ and discuss different representations for ${P}_{\mathrm{LSZ}}.$ For the ${1/r}^{3}$ profile typical of supernova envelopes we compare our analytical to numerical results and to earlier approximations used in the literature. We then perform a combined likelihood analysis of the observed SN 1987A neutrino signal and of the latest solar neutrino data, including the recent SNO CC measurement. We find that, unless all relevant supernova paramet…

A simple analytic three-flavour description of the day night effect in the solar neutrino flux

2004

In the 3-flavour framework we derive a simple approximate analytic expression for the day-night difference of the flux of solar $\nu_e$ at terrestrial detectors which is valid for an arbitrary Earth density profile. Our formula has the accuracy of a few per cent and reproduces all the known analytic expressions for the Earth matter effects on the solar neutrino oscillations obtained under simplifying assumptions about the Earth's density profile (matter of constant density, 3 layers of constant densities, and adiabatic approximation). It can also be used for studying the Earth matter effects on the oscillations of supernova neutrinos. We also discuss the possibility of probing the leptonic …

The response of (95,97)Mo to supernova neutrinos

2011

Knowledge about nuclear responses to neutrinos is essential for both astrophysical applications and studies of neutrino properties. We perform in this paper calculations of the cross sections for neutral-current neutrino scattering off the odd A = 95,97 Mo isotopes for energies appropriate for the detection of supernova neutrinos. Both the incoherent and coherent contributions to the cross sections are evaluated. The prominently contributing nuclear final states are identified and analysed. We employ the microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model (MQPM) to construct the wave functions of the initial and final nuclear states. The response of the aforementioned nuclei to supernova neutrinos are c…

Detailed study of the neutral-current neutrino–nucleus scattering off the stable Mo isotopes

2012

Abstract For neutrino detection and for various applications in astrophysics the knowledge of the nuclear responses to astrophysical neutrinos is crucial. Recent studies of neutrino interactions with the 100 Mo nucleus and the other stable molybdenum isotopes are important for the planned MOON (Mo Observatory of Neutrinos) detector. To this aim, in the present work we perform detailed nuclear structure calculations for the neutral-current neutrino–nucleus scattering off the stable molybdenum isotopes. We focus on the differential and total neutrino–nucleus cross sections as well as on flux averaged cross sections to various supernova neutrino spectra. We also propose a more efficient method…

Bounds on Neutrino Transition Magnetic Moments in Random Magnetic Fields

1995

We consider the conversions of active to sterile Majorana neutrinos $\nu_{a}$ and $\nu_{s}$, due to neutrino transition magnetic moments in the presence of random magnetic fields (r.m.f.) generated at the electroweak phase transition. From a simple Schr\"{o}dinger-type evolution equation, we derive a stringent constraint on the corresponding transition magnetic moments and display it as a function of the domain size and field geometry. For typical parameter choices one gets limits much stronger than usually derived from stellar energy loss considerations. These bounds are consistent with the hypothesis of seeding of galactic magnetic fields by primordial fields surviving past the re-combina…

Detecting the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background with LENA

2014

Low energy neutrino astronomy (LENA) has been proposed as a next generation 50 kt liquid scintillator detector. Its large target mass allows us to search for the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB), which was generated by the cumulative emissions of all core-collapse supernovae throughout the Universe. Indistinguishable background from reactor and atmospheric electron antineutrinos limits the detection window to the energy range between 9.5 MeV and 25 MeV. Depending on the mean supernova neutrino energy, about 5 to 10 events per year are expected in this energy window. The background from neutral current reactions of atmospheric neutrinos surpasses the DSNB by more than one order m…

Beta-decay of 56Cu

1998

Beta-decay studies of proton-rich isotopes near the doubly closed-shell nucleus 56Ni are of interest as (i) nuclei with a few nucleons outside a doubly-magic core are expected to represent comparatively simple configurations and thus be useful for testing nuclear shell-model predictions, and (ii) the large decay-energy window guarantees that a sizeable fraction of the strength of the allowed β-decay can be reached by the experiment. Moreover, nuclear structure properties of proton-rich N ~ Z isotopes are of astrophysical interest, e.g., concerning the EC cooling of supernovae and the astrophysical rp-process.

Sterile neutrino signals from supernovae

2007

We investigate the effects of a mixing of active and sterile neutrinos on the ratios of supernova electron neutrino flux ($F_e$) and antineutrino flux ($F_{\bar e}$) to the total flux of the other neutrino and antineutrino flavours ($F_a$). We assume that the heaviest (in the normal hierarchy) Standard Model neutrino $\nu_3$ mixes with a sterile neutrino resulting in a pair of mass eigenstates with a small mass gap. Using the density matrix formalism we solve numerically the the evolution of neutrino states in the envelope of a supernova and determine the flux ratios $F_e/F_a$ and $F_{\bar{e}}/F_a$ as a function of the active-sterile mixing angle and for the experimentally allowed range of …
