Structuring Humanitarian Supply Chain Knowledge Through a Meta-Modeling Approach

2017

To develop decision support systems (DSS) that improve humanitarian supply chain (HSC) performance, there is a need for methods that support on field data gathering and knowledge structure. We propose a meta-model to structure the knowledge of HSC and to obtain a shared vision of the HSC. It has been developed to provide a framework to class gathered data by connecting it to HSC concepts. The meta-model includes four packages, defining the collaborative ecosystem (context, actors, objectives, and behavior). The concepts gathered during our field research experiences, added to the HSC core literature, have permitted to build the HSC meta-model layer. Models built from this meta-model can be …

Maritime Supply Chain Security: A critical review

2013

The importance of container security for international trade is well established and has been the subject of recent research in the follow up of the implementation of global security initiatives and the imperative of avoiding supply chain disruptions and reduce vulnerability. This article provides a review of the emerging literature on container security specifically in its interface with global logistics systems. The paper highlights the topics that have emerged as well-established research areas and indicates in what areas scholarly attention is most needed.

Logistics Competences within World Class Supply Chains Concept

2017

In the recent years, within the business management area, one may notice an increasing importance of a firm’s competences in achieving the expected market and economic outcomes leading to business success as well as to business competitive advantage. Within business management an increasing role is often assigned to business logistics concept. Among the firm’s competences, an important role is played by logistics competences. The aim of the article is to present the results of the research conducted by European Logistics Association (ELA) and A.T. Kearney, concerning the place and role of logistics competences within World Class Supply Chains concept. Logistics competences are the long-term…

NATURAL GAS SUPPLY CHAIN: A SYSTEM AND PERFORMANCE ORIENTED APPROACH

Global energy consumption has been increasing in recent years. Among the main global energy sources, natural gas stands out. It presents benefits from diverse points of view, low emissions for the environment, low price for the consumers, lower cost and simplicity in the supply. That is why, within the global policies of emission reduction, natural gas is considered the source of transition energy between fossil fuels and clean, renewable and sustainable sources of energy. Considering that natural gas is a non-renewable resource, it presents a significant and progressive reduction in reserves in some regions worldwide, but with ample possibilities for the discovery of new reserves and trans…

Closed-loop supply chains: What reverse logistics factors influence performance?

2016

This paper analyses the inventory and order flow dynamics in closed-loop supply chains (CLSCs). In this kind of supply chains the reverse flow of materials entering the system for recycling purposes complicates the way in which inventories should be managed and replenishment policies should be designed. Specifically, we analyse the relationships between some reverse logistics’ factors (remanufacturing lead-time, return rate of recycled products, reverse order policy, and number of supply chain tiers) on the order and inventory variance amplification. We firstly perform a systematic literature review of the related studies. Secondly, by adopting a difference equation math approach and design…

Fusing storage and computing for the domain of business intelligence and analytics: research opportunities

2015

With the growing importance of external and shared data, the set of requirements for Business Intelligence and Analytics (BIA) is shifting. Current solutions still come with shortcomings, esp. In multi-stakeholder environments where sensitive content is exchanged. We argue that a new level in the evolution of BIA can be unlocked by tearing down the barriers between storage and computing based on upcoming storage technologies. In particular, we propose a revitalization of ideas from object-oriented databases. We present results from a joint project that aimed at delineating design options for BIA solutions built upon this idea. The paper outlines the interplay of various architectural layers…

Capacity constrained supply chains: a simulation study

2008

This paper explores the relationship between constrained capacity and supply chain performance. Six capacity constraint levels are studied under different inventory policies and information sharing strategies. The results suggest that an increment of production capacity, used in industry as local approach to manage increasing incoming orders, does not necessarily imply an improvement in customer service. In presence of information distortions, the strategy of augmenting production capacity can lead to satisfy at a higher cost an over-estimated market demand. The collaborative practices provide bullwhip effect dampening and inventory stability, and increase the ability of the structure to av…

Editorial – Preface to the Special Issue on Numerical Techniques Meet with OR

2021

Abstract This special issue of the Foundations of Computing and Decision Sciences, titled ”Numerical Techniques Meet with OR”, is devoted to the numerical techniques and their applications in real-world phenomena. The special issue and its editorial present numerical algorithms as they meet with different research topics such as, e.g., from operational research, supply chain management, geometrical structures and Covid-19 effects on financial applications. Besides, the special issue covers instructional information about numerical techniques which are useful for OR research problems and real-world applications on such issues.
